Nice hotel if you like to walk into Whitchurch or play golf.

A pleasant two night stay, but with a few areas of unsatisfactory niggles. First, nowhere does it say, that the reception is 'unable' to arrange a taxi into Whitchurch. Although the town is just under a mile away, the lane there is partly unlit and pitch black. I am sure if the hotel is 'unable' to obtain a taxi for customers, either make it clear prior to arrival, or provide a minibus. Surely, if several customers would like a lift into Whitchurch the hotel is missing out on easy revenue. Secondly, the cost of food and drinks is very high. and in my opinion, the quality of the food is not reflected in the price. Also, all veg, salad, chips are all an expensive add on......On a positive note, the rooms are large, reasonably comfortable, and clean. The staff were all pleasant, and helpful. The spa was clean and tidy, everything was working, (pool, sauna, steam room) and lovely views across the golf course. The two golf courses were in reasonable condition, although most greens were in a very good condition. Would I arrange to return, for either the golf or to the hotel, probably not. Collapse
Lovely grounds and hotel but few niggles

My partner and I stayed here on the 6th October to attend a wedding in coombemere abbey. We booked through hotels.com for what I thought was a fair price for Macdonald. Check in was easy and our room was available well before check in. Great sized room and generous bathroom with both shower and separate bath. The lounge bar was well stocked and the staff friendly although I think he was having some trouble with the POS system getting our order placed. However when we returned in the evening late after the wedding we noticed a loud extraction like noise persisting throughout the night. I actually went and checked the location of the noise which seemed to be a services cupboard at the stairwell at the end of the corridor. Needless to say although we both got to sleep eventually it took a while and I woke early. The morning I sat listening to this persistent noise until I got fed up and went for breakfast. Good selection of breakfast although it was split between two different rooms. The tea bags were relatively poor quality but filled a hole. The breakfast was nice overall but the fried egg was still a little runny on top and the black pudding was a very loose consistency. We chatted to friends who were also staying just below us who were right next to the aforementioned cupboard and they said it was pretty unbearable. Positives: Lovely location and grounds Clean Polite staff Negatives: Attention to detail on food Noisy facilities Not a great night sleep Avoid rooms 225/6 and 125/6 Collapse

The people, location and the rooms in this hotel are lovely. The rooms are spacious and clean. It is quiet and I suspect the golf course is super too (I don't play but it looked challenging). The price of a medium glass of red or white wine at the bar being £10 was outrageous, unjustifiable and knocks a couple of point off its otherwise good rating. Collapse

The room I had was lovely and clean, however, upon closing my bathroom door I found a used towel, I assume from the previous guest... The hotel facilities are good and the communal areas appear well serviced - Reception were welcoming & helpful, however, bar staff a little 'aloof'... We ate as a group and although the food (when it arrived) was good, we did have to ask for things such as glasses, cutlery, etc. as the table wasn't set correctly - we then had to have clean glasses as some those given out were grubby... It was set in a beautiful location... I think it would benefit from some attention to detail from the management to improve the 'guest experience'... Collapse

Stayed here with my sister in November 2016 for a spa break overnight stay with dinner and breakfast along with 2 spa treatments. Hotel is very well situated and not too far off the beaten track to find and has a beautiful well maintained driveway leading up to the hotel. Our hotel room was very nice and on the 1st floor with a great view of the golf course. The 2 x 25 min spa treatments we had each were fantastic and the 2 ladies who did them were great, one of the young ladies was Megan and I apologise I can't remember the name of the other lady. I had a facial and a neck, shoulder + back massage by Megan and my sister had a facial and a lime + salt body scrub- which she said was amazing and even suited her extremely sensitive skin. The facilities were lovely and clean and the drinks area upstairs for spa users was nice without being too formal or relaxed either way, and also had fantastic golf course views. The complimentary drinks were a nice addition and it was great to be able to have a small menu which included salads, chips, sandwiches etc to which we did order some food + drinks off it and thoroughly enjoyed. The relaxation rooms and pool with spa facilities were of very good standard. We had a drink in the bar prior to our evening meal and found the hotel to be quite quiet which was surprising for a Friday night however is also nice as you don't always want it too busy when you are relaxing. Drinks were reasonably priced considering it is a good golfing / spa hotel with a great reputation. The dining room was of a good size however as it was also quiet and there was only us and a couple of other groups of people so dinner came out quickly. Starters, followed by dinner were beautiful and fantastically displayed on the plate. Apologies I can't remember exactly what we had as it is a while ago when we came, however we both had the fish course as a main and I do recall it melting in my mouth along with the very tasty veg. The desserts which were the chocolate pots were amazing and tasted devine. We found the room to be of a good size and bed very comfortable with enough pillows if needed and enough towels and toiletries. Breakfast was included with our spa deal and was freshly cooked and to a very good standard. We would stay in this hotel again in the future as the food was absolutely beautiful and the spa to a very good standard. We have booked + stayed with this hotel brand / chain since and again found the MacDonald hotel to be very very good. Highly recommend staying here. Easy to find with plenty of free parking and lovely clean facilities with friendly polite staff. Whilst we are not golfers by any means, the views of the course are nice and while may not be to everyone's taste and "only a golf course", they certainly beat a car park view or "back of hotel" view any day of the week. We booked this hotel due to the great reviews, spa break offer+ price and also its location to us. Collapse
