From the time you arrive at this hotel the staff could not be more helpful, it would be wrong to single out any member of staff, but the restaurant manager and his wife went above and beyond the call to make our stay great. The food was great,as mentioned the service perfect, even the barman was so attentive we could not fault any of them. The grounds are ideal for walking (we took 2 dogs, the room was just by the door easy to get out with the dogs) Once again great staff. Collapse

Stayed for a weekend break with Dinner Bed & Breakfast rate. From the moment we walked in we were made to feel very welcome by Terry, who was polite, professional and happy to help. Dinner was a delight with Daniel, who was an excellent front of house - friendly with the right balance of service. Nothing was too much trouble - we even set Dom Coats a challenge at the bar to serve us a cocktail - which he happily obliged. Bedroom was lovely with a real country house feeling. Warm and cozy despite the -2 temperatures and snow outside! Breakfast was good, especially loved the granola-like flapjack bites. Keep up the good work - we shall certainly return. Collapse

We recently attended a family wedding here and stopped the night. Gordon who was the MC was fantastic and ensured the smooth running of the wedding throughout the day and evening. Nothing was too much trouble for him. Our bedroom was in the separate block and was gorgeous. It was spacious with a huge comfy bed and comfortable bathroom with nice Elemis toiletries. The breakfast was served in the Rose room and was plentiful. Service was a little slow and it felt like they were understaffed. But this didn’t ruin our breakfast. Divine scrambled eggs and sausages. All of the waiting and bar staff were friendly, very helpful and efficient throughout our stay. A big shout out to the bar staff who helped me by serving bar food in the afternoon to my daughter. The only member of staff that wasn’t commendable was a housekeeper in the separate block who said my autistic daughter couldn’t attend breakfast in her pyjamas and dressing gown. Not helpful, not respecting diversity and discriminating. But we found the hotel to be very lovely and the grounds are beautiful, shame we didn’t have better weather to appreciate them, but it is March. We also visited for afternoon tea a few weeks ago. Again amazing service, lovely sandwiches and cakes and perfect latte. Thank you Collapse

Depending on where your room is depends on your experience. There were several of us from the same organisation staying here and our experiences couldn't have been more different. Some of us had a very decent room in the block next to the main hall and some had rooms which were tired and frankly not fit for purpose in the main building. It's completely unacceptable to have sash windows (with gaps) and single glazing in bedrooms when there are sub zero temperatures outside. The heaters in these rooms were totally inadequate for keeping the rooms hospitable. The restaurant was a similar experience. Some dishes were excellent, some were hugely ordinary. There were far too few main courses to choose from and what was on there lacked imagination. Oddly the bar menu had far more choice although the portions were miserly. On a positive note, the waitresses were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. Don't think I'll be using this place again as there doesn't seem to be sufficient investment in upkeep and refurbishment. There are better hotels very nearby. Collapse

We travelled down from Scotland so my partner could attend a course being held at the hotel. Not wanting the hassle of being late and looking at the other reviews we decided to indulge and pay a little extra and stay here. This was a mistake. Upon arrival we drove up the driveway, where we were presented with 2 security barriers. No instructions or signs to tell you what to do, we stopped, thinking we'd inadvertently gone in the service entrance. After a little detour around the local area looking for another entrance we went back and edged closer and closer to the left hand gate which automatically opened. For guests arriving at night and unfamiliar with the setup the lack of signage did cause confusion. We checked in okay and headed to our room, no18(AVOID AT ALL COSTS). Upon entering the room we were immediately hit by a wave of heat. The temperature was almost unbearable. We sought out a temperature control but there wasn't one. When we called down the receptionist simply said 'oh I think they're on a timer, it'll go off soon' fair enough. In an effort to make the room temperature tolerable we opened the window, however it wouldn't stay open we ended up having to use the ever ubiquitous Gideons Bible to prop open the window! After a long journey we both wanted to freshen up, my partner wanted a bath and I opted for a shower. The bath was fine, the shower was not, no hot water and very little pressure. So I had to resort to taking a bath ah well. After bathing and preparing for bed, we had just settled down when the glorious sound of rushing water and some sort of pump filled the room. From behind the wall behind our headboard was the sound of ancient Pipework struggling to keep up with the demands made of it. A small mercy was that the bed was reasonably comfortable. At checkout the receptionist(same chap as the night before) didn't ask if we'd had a nice stay or if everything was alright with our stay as we sensed he knew had he opened that Pandoras box there'd be no closing it! For the price of £95 per night(breakfast NOT included) we were completely disappointed. If this is the standard of Macdonald hotels then it is likely we will never use them. Overpriced and poor, poor, poor. Collapse
