We visited just before Christmas for a one night stay and were not disappointed. Whilst the hotel is situated just off the M1 the secluded location gives the feel we were in the middle of the countryside. We booked afternoon tea, DBB. Apart from the restaurant manager and the wine waiter appearing to have less knowledge about red wine than us we still enjoyed the whole experience. Withing the grounds is a small church which was nice to walk around. Collapse

This is our second stay and I am writing this review only to complement a young receptionist called Sam - her patience , helpfulness and above all curtesy meant we were able to oversee many of the other shortcomings. The hotel's 'xmas holiday team' was not in a mood for the 'extra mile' we needed from them. Out group diner was a very average experience - food was good but the service deserved its own chapter! Hotel element of our stay was not bad, old room clean and well appointed but what has happened to the restaurant. Have had Christmas Lunch here over about the last 15 years and in that time it has gone from outstanding to mediocre. This year it fell to a all time low. Their idea of a traditional turkey dinner included pre prepared turkey rolls clearly pre purchase to save the chef (if they had one) any hard work. The waiting staff while pleasant were clearly recruited for the day, had little training, missed elements of the meal and were clearly out of their depth. This was a shoddy over priced Christmas Lunch which was far from the standards this restaurant used to achieve. I have the brochure from past Christmases when they did proper Christmas Lunch and the Lunch included starter, fish course, sorbet before Fresh Turkey and Venison and wild boar sausage Over the years the meal has diminished in everything but price. This year they joined the ranks of the mediocre in everything but price and finally my family have given up on them. If the best they can do is to buy in pre portioned elements to assemble and plate serve they do not deserve to be called a restaurant, perhaps a canteen is a more appropriate title. Although I have had better food in some canteens. Agree with previous reviewer about the night porters who probably needs some training and attitude adjustment Collapse

This is a classic old English ' Manor House' style hotel. We met friends there for dinner and stayed for 2 nights. We had so much fun with much laughing. The staff could not have been more helpful. We had dinner on both nights and the food and service were faultless. Breakfast too was efficient with wonderful service. We have raved about it to our friends and will definitely be back! Collapse

My family and I spent the evenings of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day here. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly front of house receptionist, we were offered a complimentary glass of Prosecco and a mince pie, both of which were reasonable in quality and a pleasant surprise after a long car journey. Unfortunately the rest of the stay came toppling down hill from here. The first disappointment was the three course meal we had on Christmas Eve, apart from the game terrine -which was edible- the food was dated, luke warm and generally very unpleasant. On return to our room we noticed that the inside of the toilet seat was stained yellow with urine (I've attached a photograph) and the ceiling in the bathroom, cracked and sinking, looked as though it could cave in at any moment. We complained, the night manager apologised and offered to move us to a different room. We were given the key to 34 and I accidentally walked into to the wrong room, what was alarming about this, was that the key I had been given for room 34, had allowed me to open the door to another completely different room. This is a serious security risk and during the Christmas period I imagine many of the guests could have had valuables in their rooms. My breakfast on Christmas morning was as disappointing as our dinner the night before, flavourless overcooked eggs on top of a sad, soggy piece of toast. When we came back to the hotel on Christmas night (11pm) we were "greeted" by an incredibly moody night manager who seemed disgruntled at having to let us in the hotel... This has been an incredibly disappointing stay, needless to stay we will not be staying again and strongly advise anyone considering staying in this hotel, reconsiders. Collapse
