Lough Eske Castle, a five star castle hotel is located just outside Donegal Town, has a rich history dating back to the 1400's being associated with the O'Donnells, the founding fathers of Donegal, a county in the Northwest region of Ireland. This is an historic building in a storybook location delivering superior hospitality and comfort. The castle hotel is the ideal place for the business traveller who wants modern day comforts and solitude to brainstorm; the wedding couple who want a WOW venue for their special day or the company who wants something different for their clients and employees.
It is the only Irish hotel to claim a World Luxury Hotel Award and has won the Luxury Country Hotel title three years in a row. Lough Eske Castle has also been named No. 1 Hotel in Ireland by MyGuideIreland; and it has been recognised among the World's Best Castle Hotels by global travel expert Stephanie Abrams.
This is the only 5 star castle hotel in Donegal and the accommodation features just 96 guest rooms, two bars and a restaurant, conference and banqueting suites and a luxuriant spa. This secluded hideaway beckons you to leave civilization behind in exquisite style.
The allure of Lough Eske Castle lies in its intriguing contradictions. Despite an imposing glass and stone facade, an easygoing blend of casual, country-style comfort and modern luxury awaits inside. Simply put, this award-winning luxury castle hotel offers a fresh perspective on castle living.

Lough Eske is an amazing must see/stay hotel. From the moment you arrive the staff are incredible, the attention to details and the level of high service is FAB. You really feel like a princess here. The room was amazing, great size and again and facilities you wanted were there for you. There is also a beautiful scenic cycle/walking routes all around the lake. A must see place for everyone, I can't wait to return! Collapse

Traveled from Dunfanghy. Wife thought it would be a fun visit to stay in a castle. We were disappointed. This is not a castle! It is an old hotel that has had two new wings attached. The old part has some charm. The new part is like any convention center in a resort like area. Our room is a very nice room complete with one US type wall plug over the desk. Nice bath and a big room The fancy restaurant is in the fancy holiday inn style new section. Nice dinner at high end pricing. Four course dinner with wine, coffee and dessert with tip was €154. Nicely cooked steak, goat cheese appetizer. You can also dine in the bar with no reservations required. The bar has some warmth and charm. Wish we had eaten there! Think mid 1950s original build with additions made in year 2000 (my thought). It would have been a fine place had I known the real style and hadn't thought we were staying in a castle! Ok modern place. NOT A CASTLE! Nice gardens and walking paths. Collapse

Getting to Lough Eske Castle Hotel was straightforward. A Ryanair flight to Knock and a pre hired car is all we needed. The drive was 90 minutes of spectacular scenery through quiet roads and a stop off at a local pub. People are so friendly. The stop at Harvey's Point for lunch is in another review but on driving up to the Castle Hotel, you cannot help but say "wow" for it truly is on the outside. The fact is, you will be saying wow all the way into the Hotel, to your room and even to the Spa followed by Dinner. There is only one fault about this hotel - it is not closer to where I live. The Hotel staff are brilliant. Attention to details and ensuring we were comfortable every step of the way. Elaine made sure of this from the start. The room was perfect with a beautiful bathroom. A great night's sleep. The Spa was also fantastic. I have never felt so relaxed after a hot stone massage. I was so relaxed that I even fell asleep. I recommend the Hot Stone treatment - best massage ever - Emma and her colleagues were the best. Dinner was also fantastic and the steak was amazing. Johnny in the restaurant is a man with a good heart - you can tell this from his aura. All of the team were great. I truly wish I had more time there. I had just come back from staying at a 5* hotel in Thailand and Lough Eske Castle beats it in every category (apart from price - but there is more to a trip than just the price). We will be coming back here again. If you are reading this and thinking about coming here.. dont think!! do it!!! Collapse

We spent two nights in this hotel during a nine day stay in Ireland. The hotel is beautiful and the grounds are very well maintained and elegant. Five stars for that. We were disappointed that there was no air conditioning in our room. This may not normally be an issue, but it was hot that first night and we had to sleep with windows open on the ground floor and a fan blowing all night. We also were not happy with the check in process ... I asked about a room with a view as an upgrade and was told that we could have such a room for an additional charge. I agreed but then learned the view is actually no different than the room I originally reserved. We stuck with that room, which turned out to be very spacious and modern and comfortable other than being very hot the first night. It had a view of the grounds, like all the room. (There is no view of the lake). The upselling and lack of disclosure made the check in experience feel very corporate and cold. By comparison, we checked into another five star hotel on our trip, and they automatically upgraded us to the best available room, no extra charge. Why not? The room is there and the goodwill is tremendous from such a gesture. We complained about our refrigerator not cooking, but nothing was done to address this. We received a wake up call at 6:45 am the first morning, even though we were fast asleep, not on a tour, and had not requested the call. After checking with my husband to make sure he had not asked for a call (we never do -- we use our phone alarms) I called back to let the guy know he had called the wrong room and that someone who actually needed a wake up call had not received one. He started to argue with me that he had called the right room! Very annoying after being woken from a sleep. I assume someone on the Trafalgar tour that also stayed at the hotel the same time, missed their call. Speaking of which, the hotel had tour groups staying during our visit. This is totally fine, but we felt like the front desk catered more to them and neglected attention to the individual guests. Several times when I called reception from my room, there was no answer. When I did get through and mentioned this, the excuse was "we're quite busy just now." Busy is a built in feature of a successful five star hotel, surely, and not an excuse for poor service. Breakfast was varied, bountiful, and excellent. Lots of American tourists and families and couples. Many of them seemed to be with one of the tour groups. At the end, a younger blond lady checked us out and was very helpful with tips for our route to Belfast. She also helpfully printed our boarding passes for us. This made up for some of our feeling of being left out during our stay. This hotel could be great if the service were improved. In a five star hotel, everything should work correctly, a call should never go unanswered, and individual couples should not feel neglected at the expense of groups. Collapse

If you missed the first sign you can keep going and still get there. This Castle has truly 5 star professionals happy to serve you and cater to your needs. My daughter is vegan, they have a dinner vegan menu, don't miss the breakfast buffet's (15 euros if pay at reception/22 euros if pay at the restaurant) pancakes and potato bread are to die for! The chef made her vegan pancakes super nice and kind man! We explore the forest and lake inside the castle by bike, but is still walking distance. The beds are not confortable, had bumps, every time I turned I woke up plus sunset at 10:09pm did not help. On our way south we stop at Bundoran, their seaside town, pretty but kind of dead in June. I shall be back for a romantic gateway! Collapse

Myself and my partner stayed at lough eske on a Sunday evening recently for my partners birthday. Cannot fault the hotel in regards service and cleanliness. Are room was fantastic. Huge bed with sofa area and a great bathroom with huge shower and twin sinks and bath. The bed was extremely comfortable and the water and soft drinks in the mini bar are a welcome bonus. We pre paid a meal in cedars grill and have to say the food was up there with the best I've ever tasted. Everything was quality and again the service was fantastic. The breakfast again was top notch and freshly made to order eggs of any kind and pancakes available by the chef. The rest of the breakfast buffet was plentiful and could find no faults and most definitely filled us up for the day ahead. I would return to lough eske again as a treat. Unfortunately as much as I would like couldn't stay more often as it is quite expensive eg Strawberry daiquiri is €13 etc so I found some things in my opinion over priced however due to the quailty of the hotel understandable. Again I would most definitely return again Collapse
