Lough Eske Castle, a five star castle hotel is located just outside Donegal Town, has a rich history dating back to the 1400's being associated with the O'Donnells, the founding fathers of Donegal, a county in the Northwest region of Ireland. This is an historic building in a storybook location delivering superior hospitality and comfort. The castle hotel is the ideal place for the business traveller who wants modern day comforts and solitude to brainstorm; the wedding couple who want a WOW venue for their special day or the company who wants something different for their clients and employees.
It is the only Irish hotel to claim a World Luxury Hotel Award and has won the Luxury Country Hotel title three years in a row. Lough Eske Castle has also been named No. 1 Hotel in Ireland by MyGuideIreland; and it has been recognised among the World's Best Castle Hotels by global travel expert Stephanie Abrams.
This is the only 5 star castle hotel in Donegal and the accommodation features just 96 guest rooms, two bars and a restaurant, conference and banqueting suites and a luxuriant spa. This secluded hideaway beckons you to leave civilization behind in exquisite style.
The allure of Lough Eske Castle lies in its intriguing contradictions. Despite an imposing glass and stone facade, an easygoing blend of casual, country-style comfort and modern luxury awaits inside. Simply put, this award-winning luxury castle hotel offers a fresh perspective on castle living.

Lough Eske is an amazing must see/stay hotel. From the moment you arrive the staff are incredible, the attention to details and the level of high service is FAB. You really feel like a princess here. The room was amazing, great size and again and facilities you wanted were there for you. There is also a beautiful scenic cycle/walking routes all around the lake. A must see place for everyone, I can't wait to return! Collapse

My partner and I just returned from a short stay at Lough Eske...and I have to say it is easily the best hotel I have stayed at within Ireland. On arrival we were greeted and helped with our luggage to reception...offered complimentary refreshments...and moved room as we arrived earlier than expected. The room itself was a courtyard room...which I would highly recommend. They feel like mini country cottages rather than a room. With everything you would expect and more. The bathrooms are very spacious...the showers are amazing. I booked my partner a spa treatment...during which I took advantage of the pool and spa facilities...all of which are very clean and relaxing. We had dinner in the gallery bar/lounge...as we found the menu more suited to our taste...and we weren't disappointed. Both starter and main course were excellent. The staff are so welcoming and very good at their jobs...they honestly couldn't do enough. Overall the experience was brilliant...the facilities are excellent. A very minor point though....more sign posts around the local area would definitely help the journey. Collapse
Not one for the bucket list. A 5 star location with 5 star prices and 2 star service.

I want to love this place but they do not offer a 5 star experience. The reason why 5 star hotels are more expensive is partly to cover the higher staff to customer ratio but that was not my experience at Lough Eske. We arrived at 3 pm to find a Children’s party (the arrival of Santa) had taken over the entire venue rather than centralised to a function room. Hundreds of excited young people was lovely to see but not hear after three hours sitting in the bar waiting for our rooms. Our rooms were not ready until 5.30 pm so we attempted to get a drink in the bar and the Host moved us from one area to another because the hotel had not set aside space in the bar for residents and he wanted to keep the one remaining bar table free for diners. Each morning it took several minutes to be seated for breakfast though there was no obvious reason for the delay. The evening a la carte service was incredibly slow and took over three and a half hours to be served three courses because the waiting staff appeared to forget we were there - I have had more attentive service and equally nice food in considerably cheaper and more atmospheric places. I did not meet the doorman until we were leaving on day three and even then he did not hold open the door as we tried to navigate with our suitcases. Don’t misunderstand me - I can open my own doors and park my own car but when you are paying big money the differentiator is in the details and someone greeting you, occasionally parking your car (so you don’t have to cross the waterlogged gravel in high heels) and opening your door whilst you negotiate the doors with luggage is why you pay the higher prices. At a 5 star hotel it is the little details that leave you with a warm glow but the staffing levels are low and they are run ragged so you fend for yourself. That is fine if you are at a Travelodge or Premier Inn because that is reflected in the cheaper price. The whole point of saving for a 5 star hotel is to have a 5 star experience and unfortunately that did not happen. When I returned I mentioned my experience to a few friends and work colleagues and many said that they each knew people who had a similar experience and would not be in a rush back for that reason so it looks like my experience was not a one off and Lough Eske are potentially losing out on a great deal of repeat business. In summary, a lovely location, a small but nice hotel, spacious rooms and bathrooms but low staffing levels and a casual approach to creating a 5 star experience means unfortunately I am not planning a return visit to the hotel but I will return to the area as Donegal town is stunning. My family and I stayed here for two nights and had a wonderful time. We had dinner there on each night and breakfast on each morning. Every single staff member we encountered was wonderful. We even had laundry service and that was also executed perfectly. The food at each dinner location, restaurant and bar was delicious and the service was speedy and friendly. The grounds this castle is located on are absolutely stunning. I recommend walking around and exploring the grounds. I wish I had more time here to experience the pool and the spa. Maybe next time. I am American and stayed here on the first leg of my very first trip to Ireland and Europe in general. This was perfect for what I was looking for for Donegal in the Fall. The setting around the hotel is perfectly mysterious, and the castle on adds to the setting. It is set in the countryside about a 10-15 minute car trip from Donegal town. You'll think you're going the wrong when trying to find it the first time as you wind down little half-dirt roads past farms and woods. Then, the castle emerges in an open space and the beautiful grounds around it only add to the atmosphere. I enjoyed walking around the area, especially at night and getting myself a bit spooked. (I was there for Halloween, after all). The staff was extremely pleasant and very well-trained. Though I wouldn't call this a 5 start hotel, 4.5 is reasonable for the amenities and service. The rooms could be updated a bit, but the bathroom was gigantic and elaborate, with marble throughout and a huge walk-in shower, bath, etc. My bathroom was basically the size of a bedroom. I ate and drank and the more casual bar near the lobby a number of nights and made some good acquaintances. The food was OK, but the style of the bar (stone walls, fireplace, oak/wood) was great...I mean, it's in a castle after all. Be aware this place does a lot of weddings so it can get busy. The pool spa was pretty nice but obviously gets used a lot so be prepared to share it with people. I would definitely come back here again and was glad I chose this resort for my first trip to Donegal, where my grandfather hails from. Collapse
