We had a business trip that took us to Ottawa for one night, and time really didn’t allow for extras. We booked the lord Elgin for a number of reasons. Location was perfect for everything downtown, and reviews made this place sound inviting-which it was! VERY charming place, staff will treat you very well and rooms were nice and clean! I would recommend this place in a heartbeat, as for me, it checked all the boxes :) Collapse

Because of its history, I was expecting the Lord Elgin to be grander than it was. My room was certainly spacious, clean, and attractive, but the hotel lacks several key amenities you would expect from a property of the Lord Elgin's stature. Room pros: 1) each desk lamp in the room (of which there were three) has an AC outlet and USB port on its base. A great convenience--no searching for outlets to plug in your chargers. 2) You receive a $5 voucher for days you opt out of maid service. You can use it toward room service, or at the restaurant and Starbucks downstairs. 3) Spacious walk-in shower. Room cons: 1) The free WiFi is slow and sketchy. If you want the fast WiFi suitable for streaming it will cost you $9.99 per day. I did not use it--given the quality of the slow WiFi I had my doubts that the fast WiFi would be worth the price. 2) No bathtub. I don't often take baths in hotels, but I like to have the option. 3) The mini-fridge had nothing in it. Hotel pros: 1) The gym is a good size. The pool is a very good length for a hotel pool, you can actually swim decent laps in it. Also, since there is no "deep" end, it discourages gangs of kids. i had the pool and hot tub to myself on a couple of occasions. 2) Room service breakfast was very good. 3) Great location. Hotel cons: 1) The only restaurant, Grill 41, has very mediocre service, decor, and drinks. The food is passable--I had an average burger and a surprisingly good seafood chowder. The beer selection is poor and the Negroni I had there was sub-par. 2) That's it for hotel amenities! There is no spa, no fine dining, and crucially, no where you can pick up snacks or fruit or a soft drink. (There is a tiny table downstairs where you can buy tiny bags of chips like you give out at Halloween). This is key because Ottawa is a ghost town at night. You can't wander out at 7:00pm thinking you're gonna find a corner store where you can buy a Coke and a banana and a bag of chips. Knowing this, you'd think the Lord Elgin would provide an onsite vendor for guests. If ever there was a hotel that should have a bowl of apples and oranges at the front desk this is it. Summary: the room itself was very nice and with a few simple amenities like free decent WiFi, a fully stocked mini-bar or on-site convenience store, the Lord Elgin would be a very very good place to stay. They should turn the Starbucks downstairs into a breakfast cafe and turn the Grill 41 into fine dining. Then it would be a top of the class joint. As it is it's a middle of the road 4 out of 5. My husband and I spent a week at the Lord Elgin. He was in Ottawa for work and then we stayed the weekend for his company Christmas party (at another downtown location). We checked in about an hour and a half early and our room was ready. We were given 2 "Ottawa 150" lapel pins when we checked in. We had stayed here last year for 2 nights and liked it so much we decided to stay here again. When I called reservations I asked if we could have the same type of room we had last year and they were able to pull up our file and give us the same room (2 queen beds with a bathtub, not a shower, in the bathroom). My husband is in a wheelchair but he prefers a tub over a wheel-in shower. The non-wheelchair accessible room was roomy enough for him. The room comes with free wi-fi but honestly it is sluggishly slow so we paid $10 a day (outrageous!) for high speed internet. The room has lots of lights (so many hotel rooms are too dark), a mini refrigerator (yay!), Keurig coffee machine with coffee and tea replenished daily and lovely large bottles of shampoo and lotion. There were lots of towels in the bathroom, something I appreciate because most hotels are stingy with their towels and you always have to call down for more. There was no robe in our room but I asked at the front desk for one and a robe and slippers were sent up within five minutes. Everyone working at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. Our package included valet parking and a full buffet breakfast. The valet drivers were quick and friendly, always having a chat with us when we were waiting for our vehicle. The buffet breakfast had lots of hot and cold options. My only complaint is that I only drink decaf coffee (caffeine allergy) and almost every morning I had to wait for them to make a pot of decaf while regular coffee was readily available. Not a big thing, but a little annoyance. My only other complaint was that the air conditioning didn't work. The room would heat up fine but since we like a cool room for sleeping, we would lower the temperature to 19 in the evening. The fan would cut in but it would blow warmish air, not cool, and the room never did cool down. There was a sign on the window cautioning you not to open the window in the winter because the pipes in the heater could freeze. All in all it's a great hotel, friendly staff, nice rooms and in an excellent location. Prices were high (we arrived on Grey Cup Sunday) but since we were traveling for business we didn't have to pay ourselves. If we were traveling for pleasure we would have to think twice about staying here with the high rates. Collapse

Was at the Lord Elgin over the Grey Cup weekend and enjoyed my stay. The hotel has been upgraded, hallways, rooms and bathrooms. The hotel room was very clean and spacious. The bathroom was small but ok, especially the shower. Staff were very friendly especially valet parking attendants. Starbucks is off the side of the hotel which made it convenient. The hotel is 5 minutes to the Parliament building and shopping. Love it. Collapse
