A Turn Down Quibble!

I and my partner have stayed many times at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square. It's location is superb--within a short walk of much of the vibrant Mayfair, Oxford Street and Piccadilly shopping areas, the tube, and with many fine restaurants nearby. We have always found service to be correct and friendly, and the fact that there are two Gordon Ramsey restaurants in the hotel, and that is has what we think is one of the best Executive Lounge breakfasts in the Marriott system, simply adds to the attraction. Although rooms tend to be on the small side (even for London) they are well appointed and attractive with good functionality for Americans. We have never encountered any issues--until this stay--and the issue revolves around a practice that is wonderful when done correctly, an annoyance when not--nightly turn down service. Turn down service should have two characteristics--1. it should happen in the evening between 7 and 9 PM when most guests are out of their rooms at dinnner, 2. it should accommodate All guests in the room (eg. both sides of the bed turned down, two bottles of water or other amenities, etc.). In the past both of these aspects have been present here at the Marriott Grosvenor Square. This time they were not. The first night the chambermaid was in our room doing turndown when we arrived back from our day out. Worse yet, she had turned down only one side of the bed (despite there clearly being two guests--a man and a woman) in the room, and she had left only one bottle of water. When asked for a second bottle of water she handed it over, but then explained, "I've been told to only leave one bottle!" OK, no problem, everyone makes mistakes, maybe she's new. Next evening, we arrive in the room around 6 PM and find a maid in the room doing turn down service! Again, only one side of the bed was turned down, and only one bottle of water left. We advised the maid that we were two, and were again given, after asking, a second bottle of water. Assuming that staff here communicate with each other or at least with supervisors, we believed we had solved the problem. Wrong! The third night in a row we arrived in our room after dinner (not sure when the turn down occurred, but at least it was not while we were trying to shower for dinner!) and found one side of the bed turned down, one candy left on that side of the bed, and one bottle of water on the bedside table. Now, I am not sure what is going on--perhaps there is a new house keeping manager who has not trained staff properly, or who has established some absurd policy of one bottle of water per room per night (on an Executive Floor with the guest being a Marriott Rewards Platinum member), but it appears that something needs to be done to ensure that proper turndown service is provided without the guest having to continually ask! Although this is not a deal breaker--we will continue to stay here when we are in London--it is an annoyance that could have been completely avoided by the overall management ensuring that ALL policies are established with guest comfort first and foremost in mind, that all middle managers and staff are adequately and fully trained, and that the very first and only word out of the staff person's mouth when a guest makes a reasonable request is, "yes"! Had all of this been in place this trip, my rating would have been Excellent! Collapse

We visited the Marriott for a birthday weekend. The hotel is clean, inviting and the friendly. As this was for my girlfriends birthday a special thanks goes to the lady who checked us in, Nana I think her name was. Not only did she go above and beyond to make our stay special she also arranged for a little cake, some bubbles and a hand-written card wishing a good birthday weekend. A real credit to the hotel. Must admit breakfast wasn’t the best only as it seemed a little confusing and those working at the time seemed a little unsure. However this did not deter from visiting again. Collapse

Stayed here for work. The room a the usual size, bed, couple of chairs, writing desk. The bed was a modern four poster which was a nice extra and the usual enormous size. The bathroom was clean with radio speakers and large mirror, all standard at this price and location. The nextdoor room had the TV on loud and you could certainly hear it clearly. I wasn't paying personally, but if I had I would have complained about the poor breakfast. I was there late, perhaps 20mins before last serving, but wow did it feel that way. Almost all the hot food was gone as were the pastries. The juice selection was small as was the continental option. At £23 each it was not good. Get dressed and step out into the heart of Mayfair for a far nicer cafe breakfast elsewhere. At this end of the spectrum you expect a far better breakfast and while the room was fine and the location excellent there are other options. Comes down to price. Collapse

Great location for a hotel in London, about 200m from Bond st. tube station. The restaurant is quite pricey for the food (i get that its's a Ramsay restaurant attache to the hotel) but paying £4 for a minuscule late is a bit ridiculous. Good room, if a little bit small, but the bed was absolutely huge, and probably the most comfortable bed I've slept in of any hotel. Staff are very friendly, checkin and check out was super speedy and very pleasant. It's probably a bit expensive for what it is, but it was worth it for the location alone. Collapse
