I had a lovely break in the Lion Quays Hotel Oswestry a couple of years ago and was looking forward to going back again. However this time our room was directly above the area where they kept the peacock who was extremely vocal. (I was not aware of it on my previous stay). Also the same said peacock was free to wander around the hotel grounds which totally freaked me as I have a bird phobia and if anyone else has this problem, this hotel is one to be avoided! Collapse

Very pleasant hotel with spa facilities. Typical of larger hotels it felt a little impersonal. But it was a good hotel, no real grumbles. However, on checking out there seemed to be a failure to understand that I had already paid for my stay through Superbreak and wanted to charge me again. All cleared up once I showed receipt sent by Superbreak to me. My advice bring a copy with you. This was quickly sorted out. Yes I would stay again. Collapse

Odd experience staying here as a solo traveller. Firstly the cab took me to the Spa instead of the reception. An easy mistake to make because the signage is so poor. Checking in was easy enough and I was fine with my room until I tried to switch off the air -con which just springs into life throughout the night like some sort of malevolent poltergeist. The bed was comfortable and although the shower facilities are very tired, overall the room wasn't too bad. Going for dinner was a challenge as you have to walk right across the car park to get to the restaurant with again no signage. The same happened for breakfast. No decent signage to guide you and on arrival at the breakfast room a very odd greeting as they have to open a fire exit to let you in. Clearly the hotel is going through a refurbishment, but you shouldn't need to have guests knocking on glass windows to be let in for their breakfast. The staff were noticeable by their absence most of the time and don't appear to being managed properly. Food wise, the quality of the breakfast was very mixed. Good bread and pastries Bad eggs Good Bacon Bad sausages Good selection of newspapers Bad coffee This should be a magnet hotel in a captive area, but it is all rather disappointing. Needs to try a lot harder. Collapse

I booked this trip for my partners special birthday. On arrival the receptionist to the spa could not have looked less interested to be speaking with us and the hotel receptionist was even worse!! We arrived at 12.30pm to find that our room wasn't available until 3pm so we made our way to the spa for our booked treatment at 1.50pm with a view to use the gym and have lunch beforehand. When we booked into the spa they advised our 1.50 treatment had been moved to 1.20pm due to staff sickness. No one had been in contact to advise us of the change but meant we had to change our plans and miss out on the gym - not happy! The snow cave was one of the main reasons we chose this venue and on arrival noticed it was out of service, due to defrosting the night before - not sure why you would defrost on a Saturday night with the weekend being peak time for a spa?? Receptionist didn't care that this caused us frustration. The treatments were the only thing that stopped us from walking out of the place, pedicure and massage were good. Buffet lunch was good, not much choice but sufficed. We made our way to the hotel, checking in seemed to be an inconvenience to the receptionist. We wanted to order room service snack but the phone was broken, which meant we had to visit the uninterested receptionist again. Rooms were a lesser quality than expected, on par with a travel lodge. Evening meal - the waterside restaurant was closed, again not updated on our booking info. Which meant we had to eat in the leisure centre bar restaurant. As part of the package we had a £25 per person allowance which we chose to use for a Sirloin steak (£25) and a rib eye (£26.50) the cuts of meat were terrible for this price! the sirloin was chewy and the rib eye was 8mm thick, again for the price heavily let down. We ordered two lots of peppercorn sauce approx £2.50 each which they brought to the table in one pot to make things easier for them (never had this from any restaurant) anyway... onto dessert. We ordered a creme brûlée and a bonoffee sundae. After about 20 minutes of waiting, the waitress (dressed in blazer looking like senior level staff) who took the order brought out two chocolate brownies. She gave us a look of disgust when we highlighted these were not what we ordered. With no apology she walked off to the kitchen, we waited for 15 minutes still no sign of our deserts. We decided at this point to cancel our desert. After telling the member of staff taking our payment there was no apology or sympathy for our terrible experience. After missing out on desert we called into the bar for a hot chocolate but after waiting 10 minutes with no acknowledgement we gave up on that idea too!! Following morning we go to check out and same uninterested receptionist from previous day checked us out. I was waiting for her to ask how we found our stay to voice our feedback to management but she couldn't have tried to get us out the door quick enough to go back to her mobile phone - so I have taken to trip advisor to share this feedback with you all. £360 for a one night spa break of this standard its safe to say I feel ripped off Collapse

Location - Great location. Straight off the main road but when you drive in the setting is beautiful. Canal, stream and large pond area. Staff - friendly and helpful staff. On arrival we were given a room with two single beds pushed together. Went to reception and they were more than happy to accommodate to changing us to a room with a double bed. Food - not great! Had full English breakfast first morning, didn't really enjoy but rest of breakfast was fine so opted for cereal and croissants on the second morning. Some dishes were dirty too and tea pots very stained. Saturday night we visited Nico's restaurant which was a disaster. Booked table for 8pm, not ready until 8.25, starters was buffet style which wasn't very appetising, just had soup (£8.95!). My husband ordered pizza and I ordered roast chicken. Unable to cut through pizza, bottom was like a brick and the chicken was like cardboard it was that dry. The staff were very apologetic and even knocked the pizza off the bill and discounted my chicken (although I literally only had 2 bites). Very expensive. For bottle of wine, bottle of water, 2 bowls of soup and a roll, £53 as we didn't eat anything else. Spa area- this was nice. Had sauna and jacuzzi. Did use the spa as was fully booked. Collapse
Disappointing and lack lustre.

My boyfriend and I booked a one night stay with dinner in an executive canal room. The room itself was nice, clean enough, although the bathroom was tiny. On the day that we checked in we used the country club facilities, which are great. The steam room was out of order and when we were having a quick rinse off in the showers they weren't the warmest but that didn't bother us too much as we knew we had a warm shower in our room. That evening we ate in Nico's restaurant. The food was really good, portions were large and the waiting on staff were really friendly. However this was all overshadowed by the lack of hot water and the awful breakfast the next morning. No hot water from the shower or even from the tap for a wash. We tried to ring reception to ask if there was a fault or report the issue but the phone didn't seem to work properly, or perhaps the line was engaged. After ringing a few times someone from reception came to our door to ask if we'd been trying to ring through. My boyfriend told her we had no hot water and she said it would be back on in 10 minutes. 40 minutes later there was no hot water and at this time we were coming close to missing breakfast. So off we went to breakfast without having had a shower like we both wanted. We decided to check out before breakfast but were offered no apology about the lack of hot water or even asked how our stay was, otherwise I would have mentioned this and asked to speak to a manager about it. We had purposely wanted to get to breakfast sooner rather than later so that we weren't rushing and we could have fresh hot food. However, when we finally arrived at around 9.50 the food that was left was poor to say the least. We had a choice between a handful of tiny pastries or the dregs of the full English. Luke warm, hard or soggy leftovers is not particularly enjoyable especially when you've paid for it. Because we had plans that afternoon and we hadn't showered, we decided to use the country club again but again no hot water and the steam room that had apparently been fixed was definitely still broken. Overall very poor. I wouldn't stay again because I'd rather just have a hot shower and a fresh decent breakfast at home. Don't think hot water for a wash is too much to expect, especially for the price we paid. Collapse
