I had a lovely break in the Lion Quays Hotel Oswestry a couple of years ago and was looking forward to going back again. However this time our room was directly above the area where they kept the peacock who was extremely vocal. (I was not aware of it on my previous stay). Also the same said peacock was free to wander around the hotel grounds which totally freaked me as I have a bird phobia and if anyone else has this problem, this hotel is one to be avoided! Collapse

Very pleasant hotel with spa facilities. Typical of larger hotels it felt a little impersonal. But it was a good hotel, no real grumbles. However, on checking out there seemed to be a failure to understand that I had already paid for my stay through Superbreak and wanted to charge me again. All cleared up once I showed receipt sent by Superbreak to me. My advice bring a copy with you. This was quickly sorted out. Yes I would stay again. Collapse

I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past, and have always loved it, hence my return. Me & my friend booked a "Friday cocktail & dreams" package, which cost £55 each for a night's stay in a twin room, use of the country club & breakfast the next morning. Immediately when we checked into the room, they had put us in a double, which we'd requested a twin- not a major problem but slightly annoying. They did however change this for us. We loved using the country club, it was clean, relaxing and great all around. However again we found a problem as we wanted to go up to the restaurant for a drink of water (as there was no plastic cups for the drinks machine in the pool so we needed some water)- we asked the staff if we'd be able to borrow a dressing gown to nip up there to save us getting changed for the sake of 10 minutes, straight away the lady said "no we don't have any spare" which we found very disappointing and unhelpful, she could've made the effort to look or apologise. This was inconvenient for us. We did nip up to nico's restaurant for some water and food, which was great! Friendly staff and very efficient. We attended the newly refurbished waterside restaurant in the evening which was the best part of our stay! We both had a 3 course meal for £28 each, which was possibly the best food we have had in a longtime. Staff were super friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was great, we would definitely recommend this. Yes, the menu is slightly confusing and expensive, however for a treat, it was perfect. Again noticing a bad point, the bill at the end was charged to our room, which we found a little odd. When we went to check out the next day, this bill had added a lot of extra costs! They had put us down for two bottles of prosecco (we only had one), two cocktails (they were supposed to be free and included in our package), some bread & olives (we had not had these) and a bottle of Peroni (again we had not had this)- we were a little shocked at the confusion of this and had we not have checked then we'd have been paying for someone else's bill!! When checking out, we had also found out that the hotel had already taken the money from my friends bank. When booking the hotel, we specifically asked for the money to be taken in CASH when we checked out and they confirmed on the phone this would be fine. They took my friends bank details for cancellation etc. To be then told this money had already been taken was very shocking and we would have liked to be aware of this in the future. It seems like I am nit picking here however we also found that when trying to sleep, even at 3 in the morning, there was so much noise that sleep was not even on the cards. I accept this may not be the hotel's fault, but all's we could hear was doors banging, toilets flushing, taps running and people talking. This was a shame as we came away for a relaxing trip. One final problem we found was the breakfast, this was extremely undercooked, rushed, mushed up and disappointing. As I have said, I have previously stayed at the lion quays and never had a problem before, therefore were hoping this was a one off. However it is definately worth mentioning the negatives for the hotel to improve on. Overall, cleanliness, comfortableness, location, are all brilliant and so is the restaurant and spa. Collapse

Stayed one night for a party at the hotel. The room was good. Ground floor with a canal view. Pity the cleaners don't go onto the patio area of the room. If they did they'd have spotted the bird muck on the patio table and chairs. Unavoidable I know but the mess had clearly been there some time. The bed was far to soft for me but otherwise the room was very pleasant. Excellent selection of Whiskey/Whisky and Gins. Prices for drinks seemed a little high. Hardly any change from £20 for a round of 4 drinks. These were standard beer and vodka, I didn't go near the £61 one shot measure of Whiskey! It was a special bottle and I'm not complaining about that. The breakfast was lovely especially the sausage. Highly recommended. Will definitely stay again but I'll get a bank loan for the bar bill. The overall experience for a two-night stay was quite good. The re-use of former canal side warehouses through clever conversions is pleasing. The room was decent, but slightly below the size and spec than expected from the marketing. The leisure facilities were good, and the pool was excellent. The location is good, but spoiled by the overhead power lines and pylons running right next to the place. My main grievance was the Waterside restaurant which had re-opened after refurbishment a couple of days before. The place does not really work as an attempt at a modern brasserie. The lighting and décor are too stark and the seating is too exposed. The menu is over-complicated and not user-friendly, with little chicken or seafood. The quality of food was good, but over-priced for what it was. The service is generally slow and not of a high professional standard. We had a particularly weird experience with the staff member who appeared to be the duty manager who failed to communicate adequately the availability of wines and tried to tempt me into buying a more expensive bottle for no obvious reason, while looking unduly smug. One more bizarre negative: there is a peacock, apparently resident who wanders the grounds. Since there is no prior warning of his presence, this can cause a degree of undue surprise and distress to the faint-hearted when one happens upon him. Collapse

Myself and a couple of friends came here some weeks ago (only just got around to writing review). Room was brilliant, lovely view as well. Hotel staff were all extremely helpful and got us checked in straight away. We had some lovely treatments in the spa, only thing that let it down was the miserable life guard that clearly didn't want to be there. The young girl with curly hair (didn't get a name) was just sat on her mobile phone the entire time we were in the pool (roughly about an hour) Not only was she paying no attention to the people in the pool but my friend actually had slipped at the side of the pool (no injury) although we all had a laugh about it, the lifeguard didn't even bat an eye lid or look up from her phone, despite my friend letting out a loud 'ouch' as she slipped. What if someone had hurt themselves? As we left we politely said goodbye to the girl on our way out only to get a half hearted 'bye' very very rude girl. Despite this we had a lovely lunch in the nicos restaurant, buffet style but still enjoyed. The same night we had a lovely meal again in the nicos restaurant as waterside was closed to a refurb, this was not a problem for us as we didn't mind the 2 minute walk, food was amazing, fast service, the waitresses were all incredibly helpful and friendly. Finally breakfast was okay, the food was nice although some items did seem to be in a lot of oil which is slightly off putting but didn't stop us enjoying it. The room felt slightly cramped but they were clearly just making use of what space they had during their referb which is understandable. Overall we did have a good stay and hope to come back, maybe won't be visiting the pool again but will definitely be using the hotel/restaurant again. Collapse

Only thing I will say is don't bother booking the thermal suite for an extra £25 each we didn't use it as the complimentary spa facilities are ample! Definitely recommend a facial- amazing! Collapse
