I had a lovely break in the Lion Quays Hotel Oswestry a couple of years ago and was looking forward to going back again. However this time our room was directly above the area where they kept the peacock who was extremely vocal. (I was not aware of it on my previous stay). Also the same said peacock was free to wander around the hotel grounds which totally freaked me as I have a bird phobia and if anyone else has this problem, this hotel is one to be avoided! Collapse

Very pleasant hotel with spa facilities. Typical of larger hotels it felt a little impersonal. But it was a good hotel, no real grumbles. However, on checking out there seemed to be a failure to understand that I had already paid for my stay through Superbreak and wanted to charge me again. All cleared up once I showed receipt sent by Superbreak to me. My advice bring a copy with you. This was quickly sorted out. Yes I would stay again. Collapse

One night here on a business stay. I came here about a year ago and was very underwhelmed, particularly with the restaurant which was a comedy of errors Fawlty Towers would be proud of. This time things seemed a little better, the reception actually had some furniture & decoration in it for a start .. The room was a decent size with all the basics, but then it began to hit home. Dreary worn decor, stained carpet, broken switch on the heater (still wired in & live) a second heater was precariously propped up against the wall mounted one, but this didn't do much either and the room was cold. Some other electrical device hanging off the wall. Broken flush button on the toilet which was barely useable. The bed seemed worn & saggy. On the plus side the restaurant was improved, swift (almost too swift) service and decent enough food. A good and plentiful buffet breakfast is available in the morning. Clearly though room maintenance is a problem here. Interestingly this contrasts with the maintenance of the gardens & grounds, which was conspicuously good (I'm a professional horticulturalist ). Perhaps the grounds care team should be asked to look after the rooms... Collapse

Just an average nothing special establishment lacking in value for the price paid. Staff seem a little uninterested and whilst accommodating not prepared to go out of their way. Across the courtyard there is a bar restaurant which on entering looks like it's undergoing some sort of remodelling with the bar area looking somewhat under dressed however the dining area is what you would expect of a hotel restaurant. Food was nice but again the staff seem to be uninterested and missing when you need their attention. Might of been an off day but from personal experience there should never be one off day in hospitality Collapse

We arrived on a Friday in November for my birthday, were able to check in earlier than advised which was good. All reception staff were friendly and helpful. The room was newly refurbed so no big problems, the hotel was undergoing refurbishment during our stay, apart from a little dust in the hall we were not disturbed by the refurb and found no problems. The room key was tricky on every entry into the room, some other guests commented the same while we were trying to gain entry to our room. The water temperature in the shower was a little cool for me at the hottest setting, but by no means cold. The television signal wasn't great, and there was no music channels or radio available which was a slight shame. Poor wifi signal in the room. The room would benefit from having a mirror over the desk for girls to do hair and makeup! As the only mirror in the room was outside of the bathroom, there was no shelf to put my hairdryer or makeup etc- balancing it on my lap was tricky. Otherwise room was fantastic! And we really enjoyed the canal balcony view. The leisure facilities were clean and well presented. The water temperature again was a little cool in both the pool and jacuzzi. Changing rooms were clean and the girls room had good hair dryers and even straighteners! Which was really good as the room only provided a small travel hairdryer. The evening meal was fantastic. No faults at all. Well cooked steaks, good wine- however there were no large 'red wine' glasses- only one type of wine glass available. Which isn't a problem- just my preference. Our morning breakfast was a buffet. Again no faults, very tasty and hot breakfast. Our spa day was slightly chaotic To start as a staff member had gone off sick, our appointments were not affected however but some others were. My massage was not to my preference, I was not asked what pressure I like- therefore the pressure was way too much and actually was painful! My partner said the same. My Therapist spoke all the way through my massage Collapse

I booked this hotel as a stop off between South Wales and Blackpool because of its location. Now, being a regular contributor to TripAdvisor I would normally check comments before booking- this time I didn't! Then I did - and there were so many recent poor reviews that I considered cancelling- but I didn't. Let me say I do "get" the poor comments - but here's my view. We turned up and entered reception- it is a bit bland and therefore cold. Very pleasant professional lady booked us in. Room was clean with all you would want. Bathroom very small but functional. We ate there in the evening, again the decor grey/white painted wood, nothing on the walls, makes the place seem bland and unwelcoming. The staff were very young, friendly and pleasant. Ordered our meals, the restaurant was busy but our meals came quickly, starters were pleasant enough, My wife had duck which she adored- I had a rib eye which was perfectly cooked. I had an expresso that was Luke warm (if not doing a lot of volume you need to flush the machine with hot water before making the coffee) I ordered a Brandy which caused much consternation as to what it was - it then turned up in a cold whiskey glass. We also used the pool/sauna which apart from broken locker catches was very good. So I am glad I stayed - with a little more imagination on decor to warm the place up, and a little more detail training to the lovely staff I think this would have been a 4 as opposed to a 3+.
