Spent two nights in this comfortable hotel. The staff was incredibly and exceptionally helpful: provided local information, gave restaurant suggestions and followed through on every request for information if they didn't have it at hand. Breakfast buffet very good, dinner also excellent. Gorgeous setting with gardens and a very nice swimming pool. Just outside downtown, walkable, but hotel provides transportation to the the main plaza. Advantage: privacy, quiet and peaceful. Collapse

We spent two nights at Hotel le Pigonnet in early May, the last stop of our two-week vacation in Provence. Perhaps, because we had already stayed at some genuinely outstanding hotels, our expectations were too high, but we found le Pigonnet to be oddly disappointing. The hotel is located well outside the historic center of Aix, a good 20-minute walk from Cours Mirabeau. This was not too inconvenient on a mild spring morning, but was not very pleasant on a hot afternoon or, worse, late in the evening after a three-course dinner and a bottle of wine. We were told at check-in that the hotel operated an hourly shuttle into the center; this turned out to be not a regularly-scheduled service with a dedicated driver, but an on-demand ride provided by whichever staff member was available at the moment, and the staff seemed a bit put out by the request. And because the “service” is offered only until 8:00 PM, it was useless for after-dinner return trips to the hotel. On the plus side, the hotel’s distance from the historic center meant that it was very quiet and peaceful; we were able to sleep soundly with our window open. The hotel is located on a very large property and is surrounded by beautiful gardens with multiple places to sit and relax; unfortunately, during our stay, several of the cushions on the outdoor furniture were not in place, and not a single one of the many fountains that punctuate the gardens was operating. Had these details been attended to, the gardens would have been so much more welcoming. The public spaces are simply and tastefully decorated; the lobby is small and a bit spartan, but the dining room looked lovely and the bar was very clubby with its dark wood paneling and leather chairs. We had a deluxe garden-view room on the first floor, overlooking the swimming pool. The room was not large, especially compared to other similarly-classified rooms at other hotels, and didn’t really measure up to what we had experienced in other hotels as “deluxe” – at our room in le Pigonnet, the floor and walls were bare, with not a single rug or piece of art. And there was only one chair, the not-very-comfortable desk chair. But the room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was compact but well-appointed; but the adjacent water closet was so tiny there was barely room for one’s knees when seated! Again, it seemed the details were lacking, which was disappointing given how le Pigonnet positions itself as a five-star hotel. We didn’t dine in the hotel’s restaurant but enjoyed breakfast in our room– a huge assortment of the usual breads, pastries, fruit, yogurt, coffee and hot chocolate. Room service was timely and efficient. Service throughout our stay was generally acceptable, but not exceptional. The staff were polite and adequately responsive, but most seemed disengaged or disinterested; none were especially attentive, accommodating or truly welcoming. The hotel doesn’t even have bell service; we had to carry our own bags from and to our car at check-in and check-out, with the limited, awkward and seemingly reluctant assistance of the concierge at check-in (we didn’t bother to ask at checkout). Unfortunately, the staff at le Pigonnet, while polite, really didn’t seem warm and welcoming, which stood for us in stark contrast to our experience at the other hotels on our trip. The one standout among le Pigonnet’s staff was Marco, the friendly and attentive bartender (who also happens to make an excellent Kir Royale). Hotel le Pigonnet is not a bad hotel by any means, but unfortunately we never felt welcome there. It is simply not up to the standards of accommodation and service one would expect given its prices and purported five-star ranking. The property has great potential, but the management and staff need to pay more attention to the details in order to fulfill that potential. Collapse
