We had a wonderful stay here to attend a wedding. The castle is beautiful and levels of service from the Staff are impressive. We were particularly impressed at the standards shown for the wedding drinks reception. And at the evening meal.

We were at weddings here and in LoughRynn recently and I must say that we enjoyed both but I would say that the Loughrynn scraped it on detail. The food was excellent except fot their sausages, for a 5 star hotel the quality of their sausages was not great. The staff were excellent except for one of the receptionists, she was a bit rude and unhelpful and we didn't get our room until well after the 3 o'clock promised time Collapse

I love Kilronan Castle, I've stayed here a few times and occasionally take a day-trip to the thermal suite spa or drawing room for coffee to unwind when I am in the area. The walking trails around the lake are beautiful, especially in autumn and I like the tranquility of the castle in general. My partner and I stayed here recently for a one night, mid-week break and had a lovely, peaceful stay, however, this was not without some flaws. I'm not one to complain too much about a bit of peeling wallpaper, as long as a place is clean and reasonably maintained. Customer service from staff is more important to me and the majority of the staff we encountered were very pleasant and friendly. Now for the not so good! I was a bit disappointed that there were no fires lit when we arrived. It was a cold, damp late October day and a fire is always welcoming. We asked one of the staff to put on the gas fire in the Drawing Room and he willing obliged. This stayed lit for the remainder of our stay but the reception area and open salon area were cold and soul-less. Such a pity that there are no real, log fires. My main annoyance was our dining experience. I had sent two emails to reception a couple of weeks in advance to make a reservation for dinner in the Douglas Hyde restaurant. Communication prior to that had been good. I didn't receive any confirmation on the first email, but received a very nice reply with confirmation on the second email with sample menus. All communication was smooth after that. I enquired about the 5 course meal ( which I had before) as there was no mention of it anywhere, and the email from reception stated that it was €55 per person. Our dinner reservation was confirmed again by the receptionist when we were checking in. When we went down to the restaurant at 7pm, we were greeted warmly but there was no record of our reservation. I mentioned that it had been confirmed when we checked in. We were left standing in the cold lobby, a little confused for a few minutes while the waiter went off to check. I had a look at the list of reservations and saw my name further down the list under a different heading (guests with NO reservation ??? or something like that??). He came back and with a bit of sarcastic humour, (telling us they could bring a table into the lobby), he brought us to a table in a dreary, dark corner in what appeared to be a family dining area. Even the tea-light on the table didn't illuminate much light. Probably the most dreary corner in entire restaurant. I mentioned the 5 course meal to the waiter, to which he responded quite abruptly, 'Did we have a package break?', to which we replied, 'No, we did not!'. Already, this was becoming an uncomfortable experience. The sarcastic humour continued as the meal progressed. I normally enjoy a bit of humour, especially in a formal restaurant, however, I do not like sarcastic tones, with regard to what I leave behind on my plate. We also overheard the same 'head waiter', telling off another waiter for not letting a bottle of French red wine breathe!! Ok fair enough, but I didn't want to hear this conversation. The other waiting staff were very pleasant. The meal itself was beautiful, although I was still a little hungry after a 5 course meal!! Portions were very small (two duck breast slices for the main course!) I am petite, but even my small belly felt that was a meagre portion. It was a beautiful meal, dampened by a mishap in communication regarding our reservation, a dark, dreary corner (a warm lamp could be a solution here to add a glow to the dark wooden panelling) and sarcastic humour from waiting staff that just wasn't funny. That was disappointing! We continued on into the drawing room for a cocktail by the fire. We had no interest in the live music downstairs. My favourite cocktail is an Espresso Martini but they didn't have it on the menu ( They did have an equally tempting Chocolate Martini which I nearly went for). We enquired anyway, and the bar man was extremely friendly and said he would make one and seemed to know what he was doing. I was delighted! However, not so when the bill arrived at check-out. €14.50 for the cocktail (all the others were €12.50)!!! I live in Dublin and am used to overpriced cocktails, however the maximum I've ever paid in upmarket bars has been about €13. It was NOT the best Espresso Martini, a little watery and felt like one of the components (Kahlua/Tia Maria) was missing, otherwise I would have been ok with the price, as the bar man was so nice and went our of his way to make it. The rest of our stay was lovely. Room was very comfortable and a beautiful bathroom with large bath tub. We didn't have a lake view but the autumnal colours from the trees out front were equally lovely. Coffee in the drawing room is always very good, however, I seem to remember bigger cups on my last visit (at Easter)!!! Breakfast was excellent, and we were greeted very warmly by the staff. We used the thermal suite which was lovely, but the cold plunge pool wasn't functioning. It appeared to have dead leaves and algae floating on the surface. I even saw a lady dipping her toes in (perhaps she thought it was one of those seaweed baths) but they should really have taped it off as 'out of order'. Aside from the above complaints, I will come back as it was mostly a positive experience. I hope some of my comments highlight things that could be improved in general. Collapse

Kilronan Castle Estate and Spa is one of many wedding-factory castle hotels sprinkled throughout Ireland. Fortunately, there were no weddings during our two-night, mid-week stay, so we didn't have to contend with nuptial revelers. The hotel itself is unremarkable. The public spaces are not particularly inviting and the decor is borderline faux castle tacky. Most of the guest rooms are situated in a large, gray, boxy addition that is poorly matched to the original castle structure. Our guest room was spacious and comfortable, but the highlight was the spa-like bathroom. If you're in the mood for enacting a revisionist Cialis commercial, the tub pretty easily accommodates two, and the separate, futuristic shower -- straight out of a sci-fi movie -- invites lingering and long songs. I wanted to take the bathroom home with me. The wooded grounds sprawl around Lough Meelagh and are wonderful for long strolls. It's a short walk into Ballyfarnon and the cozy Shivnan's Horseshoe Bar (conveniently located next to Shivnan's Funeral Home), where a pint and lively conversation await. We passed on dining back at Kilronan Castle, but the restaurant looked quite elegant. We passed on the spa treatments as well. Overall, the staff was somewhat indifferent, which may well suit travelers who prefer to simply be left alone. Would I revisit Kilronan? Did I mention the bathroom? Collapse
