The hotel location is fantastic (across the street from Central Park). Very clean, recent renovation - very classy hotel. The problem is the level of service. I am Marriott Gold member, and expect basic amenities like bottled water in your room, coffee maker in-room (usually a Nespresso or equivalent). This property has neither, and one front desk employee grumbled about getting me water and told me to order room service. Completely unacceptable for a hotel supposedly of this caliber (and was the worst JW Marriott-labeled hotel and I have stayed at many!). Collapse

Platinum status doesn’t mean much at Marriott anymore. Despite months of advance reservation our room was very sad. View of a brick wall, shower leaks because door does not close, front desk swears there are do not disturb “lights” above door you can activate, NO! Shower leaks badly, tub handle is sad retrofit & little stuff like cold water indicator on tub missing & WiFi was very spotty & did not work without calling under our reservation more than once. Breakfast was slammed & out of lots of food an hour before closing. The front desk staff was just not helpful. Just not Marriott standards, we clearly like them enough to earn platinum status but, also why we have earned status at SPG - Hilton in past as well. Hotel options are obviously changing. Such a pity to see JWMarriott & great location like Essex House slide. Collapse

My fiancé and I stayed here for a quick trip to the city to get into the holiday spirit. The location is great - not far from many subway stations, right across from Central Park, a short walk from Times Square, great shopping on 5th Avenue, and the Christmas market in Columbus Circle. The Lobby is beautifully decorated for Christmas. We checked-in early, which was great - our room was ready around noon. The only hiccup of our check-in was finding someone in our room! The front desk handled it gracefully and promptly, and overall, it was a non-issue for us. The rooms are clean, the bed is comfortable. I wish there were more outlets in the bathroom, as well as additional hooks for towels, but these aren't deal breakers for me. We had drinks at the bar one night (Southgate). Service was wonderful, but the drinks were a little pricey, even for New York. I enjoyed the mixed nuts that were offered with the drinks. Overall, great hotel and I'd recommend to others visiting the city. Collapse

My Boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel this past weekend. We were in room 3812, a corner suite with 1 1/2 baths, master and living area. My boyfriend is a Marriott Platinum card holder and we are vacation club owners, so we have stayed at many Marriott's in many locations. Every year we start off our Christmas season by venturing to NYC for shopping, shows and of course to see the tree, we typically stay in the heart of times square at the Marriott Marquis, but felt that the marquis was getting run down and far too busy this time of the year, so we decided to stay a little further away from the craziness. We arrived Thursday night at 8:30 pm, when we pulled up in front of the hotel there was really no designated area for guests to check in, no door man to greet us....I saw a women in the revolving door cleaning the windows so I figured I'd ask her, but before I could, a door man came running out of another door to help with our luggage and to valet the car. The husband of a couple we were meeting is wheel chair bound and there was no ramp for him to access the sidewalk in front of the hotel, he had to wheel to the end of the road, at night, against traffic to access the corner ramp. The check in process was smooth, the lobby was beautifully decorated for the holiday season and we were assisted to our room. We were told on the way to the room that it had just been renovated two months ago, so we were expecting greatness. The decor of the room was under-whelming, modern, and in tones of gray, black, white and beige. The suite was a nice size. The master did not have a dresser so we had to live out of our suitcases for things that did not get hung in the closet. There were an abundance of outlets and USB ports built into the night stands, which was very convenient. I noticed several things about the room that need to be addressed, the following aren't big issues, but for the price one would not expect to see the lack of detail. The small corner shower head pointed directly towards the door, the head had to be turned towards the wall before starting the shower. The knob on the shower faucet was missing the insert, along with the "cold" knob in the bath tub. There was a cut out in the bathroom ceiling that had not been repaired properly with dirty hand prints. A light cover in the living room chandelier was missing, and another outlet is needed in the 1/2 bath. Here is the big issue we had with the room.....Friday morning when getting out of bed we noticed a great big stain on the sheets, down near our calves and ankles....and in an attempt not to offer too much information, there was the presence of little black hairs....This was unacceptable and totally gross! We immediately stripped the bed and made sure the sheets were changed when we got back to the room. Saturday morning at 10:00 am we were awoken by housekeeping attempting to enter the room, but could not because the interior latch was in place. I can't say that the hotel is average, because it is far from average, but I can't give it a "very good" rating either because of the stained sheet and lack of detail. We should have reported the sheet incident, but just didn't want to cloud the trip. The sheets were changed and the issue remedied. The housekeeping and maintenance staff needs to pay more attention to detail at this hotel. Other than this, the hotel is beautiful, actually it was easier to access the holiday attractions from the Essex House then from the Marquis, less congested sidewalks. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. And the bar makes a great Cosmopolitan. Collapse

We used my husband's hard earned travel points to take a girls trip and stayed in the FABULOUS junior suite. It was amazing - all around. The club lounge is top-notch, the location can't be beat - the smell of the lobby is sooooo amazing and we just loved staying there. Kevin (chief concierge) truly made our stay that much better and elevated it. He is so friendly, caring, and pays attention to detail. He saved us a ton of time at check-in and helped out whenever we needed something. Even told us some interesting history of the hotel. Kevin - you're the best -thanks! Collapse
