It is clear that this hotel has some years on the bag, a renovation of the rooms would be appreciated, e.g. We could not open the windows and not all the blinds worked together with the AC was very noisy. But on the positive side is the location of the hotel, and we had cleaning each day. If you only want a bed to sleep in at night this is fine for that. Collapse
Great location, reasonable price

I needed a hotel room with 2 separate beds that made most of proposals too expensive. With this hotel it was exactly what I looked for (room type and location) and for reasonable price. The rating of the hotel was not very inspiring, but I risked and was really awarded. It was very quiet and all exactly as depicted and described. So, as we new there will be no coffee machine or kettle, we were prepared. After checkout the luggage was stored for free. Collapse

We looked long and hard at choosing a hotel – NYC is not exactly a mid range cost destination. This hotel had mixed reviews, but we booked it and overall it was well worthwhile. Three stars only as there is no restaurant and bar, but the rest of the facilities worked pretty well. Nice big room, big bath, excellent shower, a safe ( don't think that is in all rooms, but the hotel has one near reception ) and the absolute necessity – a kettle and replenishable ( most days ) tea / coffee ! A flat screen TV if you have a need for that sort of thing, and three levels of wifi, one of which is free, and was absolutely fine in our room for web browsing, emails etc. You can get faster speeds by paying if you wish. The a/c was decent, although as this was May it wasn't the time for hot weather. A lot has been mentioned in reviews about noise. Bit difficult to see what the hotel can do short of a complete refurbish and double glazing. Going on all around it is NYC ! In truth there was external noise, so if you are a light sleeper, take earplugs. Frankly we were doing so much during the day we just crashed out. We were there 8 days and absolutely touristed our socks off. But what a great place to go and so many ( over used word, but here it’s true ) iconic sights. Just do it. To pick just one, the night view from the Top of the Rock is simply stunning. Pre book, and aim to go well after dark, as large numbers book for around dark, take their photos then disappear as soon a they've done so. The view needs to be savoured slowly, without looking through a lens all the time The real benefit of the hotel is the location. 10 minutes walk from Grand Central, which is the gateway to just about everywhere. Empire State, Fifth Avenue, Broadway, all 15 minutes or less. We were told that to walk between street ( e.g. 38th to 39th) , is reckoned at one minute. To walk between Avenues is 3 minutes. As a rule of thumb that worked out reasonably well. Friendly welcome and we were told on arrival we’d been upgraded to a room with a view. It seemed just to be the room we’d booked, but sure enough if we craned our necks only a little, the top of the Empire State Building, lit by a different colour scheme every night, was visible out of our window. Staff always helpful. No problem storing the cases on our last day, although as mentioned in other reviews, you’d have to pretty brazen not to tip. However tipping is simply the local culture, and pretty much unavoidable, and if you don’t want to budget for this part of NYC life, then I suggest Skegness. Most restaurants list on the bill the gratuity amounts for 15, 18 and 20%. Corrigan’s, an Irish pub / restaurant were the only one we visited to have the front to charge a percentage ( 18% iirc ) automatically and then have an additional entry on the bill for any “extra gratuity” ! Good food though. One point on using credit cards – there doesn’t seem to be any need to input a pin on a mobile machine. Mostly they just take the card away and scan it. Some restaurants get you to sign, others ( and most stores ) just seem to scan it and give you a receipt. We worked out that on the receipt you wrote “cash” in the gratuity section. They don’t re – input the card for gratuities, or offer the chance to add the gratuity to the bill. Plenty of good places to eat in a 10 minute walk – mainly on the streets, not the avenues. Moonstruck, just over the road, looks an everyday diner but had excellent food and a far greater selection than we were expecting. And the Heartlands Brewery in the Empire State was excellent for food and beer – if you have a New York Pass, which I’d absolutely recommend you consider, they give you 15% off, which also makes it pretty good value. That's the best thing about it. The rooms are not like the pictures on website, they are quite dark and small. Beds are comfy. Was a bit disappointed by the room after 13 hours travel, considering I've stayed in dozens of hotels, though not in NYC. So maybe this is the standard? We stayed in the 10th floor and didn't have a street view. Even during daytime we needed the lights on as it was quite dull. The room was small, especially with 2 people. It was a bit of an obstacle course manoeuvring around the room especially at night. We actually switched rooms, and the second was worse, even smaller. It had no chain lock on the door. When we complained about the second room, we were told we would be moved higher up and to a front facing room but we had to bring our bags down and technically 'check out' when we came back later that night we found out we hadn't actually been moved at all and in fact would not be moved at all. The lady we spoke to at that point -11pm Sunday 23 april- was quite rude towards us. Upon checkout we left our bags in storage and the member of staff asked for his tip first. Overall i didn't enjoy my stay at this hotel, the best thing about it is its location and that's it. I'm sure once it's done with its renovation - if there is one as I saw no evidence of one ongoing, it would be a very nice place to stay, but my first impression wasn't a positive one and I would be quite reluctant to stay here again or recommend it.
