After visiting numerous hotels around the world for 30 years, I used to work near the hotel and visit there all the time. I am so pleased to revisit the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong again after 10 years. To me, it's a stand-out in terms of the atmosphere, presentation, and service standard among numerous new hotels in Hong Kong. It makes me feel just travel back to the "good old glory days" of luxury hotel standard. The hotel is old but it had done an amazing job in upholding their standard of service and management. This will tell you all: this is the first time I stayed at the Shangdi lai. The hotel is so good that I will try to stay at the Shangdi La if possible on my future trips. I chose this hotel because I wanted for a peak view room. Something to make for a change, because in the last couple of times, I came at New Year so I booked another hotel right on the harbor on Kowloon side to watch the firework. I found that some hotels, though facing the harbor or the peak, may not offer the panoramic view as they are either in the lower levels only, or being blocked by high rise. After research, I found this hotel is serious in offering the view it promises - it starts from floor 39. The lower levers are office spaces. And also, for peak view side, the hotel faces the Hong Kong Park. And the hotel seems to be located in an exclusive area - being quiet and still offers a lot of amenities in the mall underneath. The hotel exceeds my expectation. It is so beautiful - the ornaments, decorations, and craftsmapship are so beautifully done. It incorporates the traditional Chinese decorations with modern comfort. Not only the sparkling chandelier in the room, the moulding, silk wall paper, marbles point to a luxury experience, but the attention to comfort in every single detail is un-matched. The service is good. Every one - from the concierge, doorman, housemaids, and restaurants servers are polite, courteous, and efficient. They seem to be serious to provide you with excellent service without asking for anything. I had breakfast in the hotel for 3 days that I stayed. The breakfast buffet offers so many varieties of food - press-your-own vegetable juice, press-your-own orange juice, make to order omelet/congee/noodles. Many standard western and Chinese breakfast items. Fresh fruits are ripe and sweet and fresh. The food and service are so good that on the last day, we have breakfast, lunch and dinner are at the hotel. Collapse

We stayed in a harbour view room at Club level during a 23 hour layover on our way to Vietnam. From the moment we were met at the airport, escorted to our driver, transported to our room with its' jaw-dropping view and served hot tea, we were in heaven. We then went upstairs for complimentary canapes and cocktails to see night fall over the harbour and city. In the morning the Bell Captain walked us to the path that leads to the Peak Tram, following our ride and hike, we returned for a great breakfast at the Seventh Floor buffet before retiring to the pool for a long swim and a late Thai lunch served poolside. Afterwards, our kind driver traversed the city traffic and our escort the airport check-in. While some luxury hotels are always letting you know exactly what they are doing for you the staff at the Shangri La provide something unique - extreme empathy, sensitivity and kindness. It was an exceptional experience. Collapse

We ended our Hong Kong trip with a few nights in the Island Shangri-La. Check-in was efficient and pleasant (thank you, Bernadette) with our room ready earlier than expected. The hotel is beautiful, made to look more like a luxurious home than a hotel. The rooms are the same, with dark wood paneling and a chandelier-type light. I was a bit worried when reading reviews complaining that some of the harbor views were very small or obstructed by buildings, but this was not the case for our room. I have been in rooms where it claimed to have harbor views but really seeing a tiny bit of water out the corner of the window is at best misleading and in truth plainly lying. So we were happy that our views of the harbor were expansive through the large windows. The welcome tea in the room was lovely; I wished this was provided as part of the service daily as a hot cup of real tea not from teabags is so comforting after a day of travel. I also thought the multi-story mural in the hotel was stunning. I took the bubble elevators up and down just to get a better look at it. I do wish we had a few more days here - we didn’t have a chance to properly look around the hotel or try any of the restaurants. We didn’t opt in (and weren’t offered to) to the Horizon Club, so I cannot comment on that. In regard to location, we actually felt a bit far from things; many restaurants/shops seem to shut down fairly early around here likely because it is so close to Central, where it is primarily for office workers during the day. Perhaps we didn’t know where to look. One thing that wasn’t the best was the shower - the floor of it is somewhat slanted away from the drain, so the water doesn’t drain properly. This meant I had to stand in a puddle of water while I showered which was slightly bothersome. It is a very small thing, but somewhat surprising of a hotel of this caliber. One morning the mirror light of our bathroom started flickering on and off, and would make a strange sort of buzzing/zapping noise which was concerning. We couldn’t even turn off the light, so we called to ask for it to be repaired. When we came back later in the day, it was fixed for us. Another thing to note is that this hotel doesn’t provide a phone or portable WiFi like many other hotels in HK. I would have preferred that. Overall, I very much enjoyed our stay here and look forward to being able to stay again! Collapse
