The only blemish on the stay was the big doona had us both feeling too warm when we were sleeping (found a spare blanket in the cupboard when we were packing to leave :-) but otherwise the room was a good size with everything we needed. We usually stay at The Langham when we stay in Melbourne but decided to check into The Intercontinental because of its central location. The positives: check in was easy, the executive room was nice & spacious, the location is perfect. Walking distance to everything. The negatives: Breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday was disappointing. The variety was great but on Saturday everything was cold, old/not fresh and not refilled. I had to ask for mushrooms, hashies and tomatoes as all the bowls were empty. Sunday they didn't have enough tables to seat their guests so we were seated at the bar where table service was not existence and we had to constantly ask for water, coffee, plates to be cleared etc. I had prepaid for our accommodation as I always do so that at checkout I can hand the room key over and leave. I was told the account wasn't settled and initially I was asked for over $100. I refused and was then told reservations made a mistake at the time I booked and paid so the final account is $52. I was not impressed. After a few back and forth conversations of 'mistakes' and me saying 'not my problem' the manager agreed to waive the fee. I'm in two minds on if we'll return. Collapse

We stayed for three nights club level at this property at the end of July. Overall the hotel itself is in good condition and the club lounge personnel took good care of us. The food offerings in the lounge were very nice, my only recommendation would be to offer a self serve hot selection in the evening. This particular lounge gives you one plate of hot hors d'oeuvres. If you want more, then you will need to ask. The reason this property gets 2 stars from us is because we were assaulted by a vagrant when we were departing the hotel. Unfortunately the hotel does not provide a 24 hour bellman or security at the front of the hotel. When I pulled up with our car at 6:45am, my family walked from the front entrance to the curb and I unlocked the car. Suddenly a man jumped into the passenger seat and began threatening me. My wife managed to yank the person from our vehicle, and luckily the situation eventually deescalated, but only after much screaming and yelling from all of us. After contacting the police, I wrote to the GM regarding the lack of security and suggested that they place cameras at the entrance. His reply was that privacy concerns precluded the use of cameras pointed towards the street. I find the response wholly unacceptable and certainly if privacy is a concern, then perhaps a 5-star property such as the Rialto needs to have someone on duty to provide security 24 hours a day. Although this may have been a rare event, we have never experienced an attack such as this anywhere in the world. As such we cannot recommend this hotel until assurances can be made by management that they are taking steps to provide better security to their main entrance. Collapse

This was our second stay here, and it was a huge improvement on the first, I'm happy to say. This time we took a club room for the weekend. Club service was fantastic. It was so nice to come back from shopping in the city and be able to go straight to the lounge for a beautiful afternoon tea. Although children are not allowed in the club lounge in the evening, they made us very welcome in the restaurant instead and we certainly didn't feel like we missed out on anything. On the contrary, service was very friendly and attentive. My husband and I enjoyed nice wine and canapés, and our 4 year old son loved choosing his dinner from the special kids menu. And we didn't feel self-conscious when our boys got a bit excited. The beds were very comfortable. So much so, that my husband didn't get up again after we put the boys to sleep on the first night! Not a problem, I went down to the restaurant and enjoyed a peaceful dinner on my own. Overall we were very comfortable in the room despite some noise carrying from the function on Saturday night, which didn't affect any of our sleep. We always wish for a bath in hotel rooms, but there's none here. The bathroom is nice with a good spacious shower anyway. We love the rooftop indoor pool but on this occasion the water was too cold and my sons couldn't stay in there. Maybe it was too early in the morning and the pool hadn't warmed up yet. The hotel is in a good spot to walk to the river, and visit Polly Woodside with the kids, as we did. And also an easy walk to Crown, Southern Cross station and Etihad stadium. Free tram out the front gets you around the city for shopping. Our family had a lovely relaxing weekend here. Collapse
