The Intercontinental is located in what once was two separate warehouse type buildings with a small street in between. The street is not a vertical lobby, with the restaurant, bar, etc. It is a covered atrium in effect. The hotel was very good but there are some things to consider. The main one is that you have no view of the outside from your hotel room -- you look into that atrium. As such, you have no idea whether it is sunny or raining, night or day. Second, the rooms are small for an Intercontinental, especially for two people (we were on the club floor). It was impossible to put out two suitcases (in fact, impossible for one large suitcase to be opened flat except on the bed). Service was great, the breakfast buffet was ample and delicious, bathroom was fine, etc. And it was quiet. Finally, this hotel is right in the middle of the business district which in Melbourne is a surprisingly pleasant area. Collapse

So disappointing to have to write a review while I am still here on our first night! Booked a weekend away to celebrate my wife's birthday and after making numerous calls to reservations and the front desk to ensure they know it was her birthday we were greeted with just the basic customer service. I normally hate reading reviews about customer complaints as I am in the customer service business, but to spend so much time organising a trip away and booking interstate flights I might as well just booked on Wotif. Arrived at reception and was asked the purpose of our visit which I happily conversed was to celebrate my wife's birthday and was greeted with "that's nice". Received a complimentary voucher for a free drink (which they give away to anyone) and off we went to our club room. On entering our room there was nothing to suggest that we were there to celebrate an event. No note, no chocolates, no strawberries, not even a house wine !, Took my wife up to the club room and while we had some wine the food on offer was nothing like we had here on our last trip 18 months ago. Selection is so basic that I thought I was at Coles. Only shining light was Emily who is a fantastic staff member and went out of her way to congratulate my wife on her birthday when we were chatting. Not sure what benefit there is being a IHG member when apparently my status doesn't even warrant an upgrade. Again, a shame that this has occurred but hopefully this magnificent city will provide us a memorable weekend stay for my wife. Collapse

On arriving at the Melbourne rialto we were warmly greeted by kishor who also is the manager of club lounge, we had an efficient check in and our room was ready a beautiful junior suite on the 3rd floor it was towards the front of the building with beautiful church like windows the original ornate windows with leadlight the room was so spacious with such high ceilings and plenty of space great bathroom and walk in wardrobe it had its only little entrance which was really cute as it does front onto Collins street so you had a view of the street really nice with nice touches of chocolate and strawberries as we are using our ambassador certificate for the weekend staying on a Friday and Saturday night the club lounge is really comfy and a very warm and cosy feeling kishor manages this too and takes care of us very well as does the beautiful girls who work there they were all amazing and take a lot of pride looking after everyone the afternoon tea evening drinks and canapes and a gorgeous breakfast which you can have upstairs or downstairs in the main restaurant. we ate at both merchant and alluvial at the intercontinental both were lovely and enjoyed the alluvial very much and would eat there again.I really enjoy just the total relaxation in this lovely old hotel a few minutes and your at crown and close to many places to eat in the city too the staff concierge and valet for parking all brilliant cannot wait to stay with you again so thank you kishor for your hospitable grace towards my husband and our friend we were travelling with it makes it feel like our second home Collapse

We stayed overnight in April due to a meeting in the morning, as we have on a couple of occasions. This time we forgot to grab the toiletry bag from the bathroom. We didn't notice until we got home that night. I called the hotel to be told to call back in the morning as the Cleaning supervisor was not on duty at the time. I called back in the morning to be told that they would have to check the storeroom as all property left in rooms were accounted for and written in a book please call back the following day. Again as l did, l was told that they couldn't check the room as it had already been re booked, but hang on wasn't the room cleaned that morning we left then the cleaning personnel should have found this bag if they had been doing their job. in short we lost our bag not good enough for such a high standard hotel VERY DISAPPOINTED YOUR CLEANING CREW ARE NOT TOO HONEST AFTER ALL Collapse
