In the heart of cosmopolitan Sliema, the Imperial Hotel is located between the main areas for sun and swimming at the shoreline along the Tower Road and shopping and sightseeing along The Strand by the Sliema Ferries which can take you to the capital city of Valletta in a 15 minutes journey across the bay. The main bus station is located in Valletta and public transport to practically every destination on the island can be picked up from here.
The Imperial Hotel is also a stroll to St Julians' and Balluta Bays, home to the latest restaurants, smart bars and cafes of Malta. Buses from outside the hotel conveniently offer a variety of routes, including to Valletta if a ferry ride is not to your taste. For a less energetic day, you can relax by our pretty outdoor swimming pool, reading, topping up your tan and relying on our staff to bring you what you need from our bars or restaurant.
Combined with the warmth and efficiency of our friendly and approachable staff, you are guaranteed a friendly and welcoming stay at The Imperial Hotel. Our high ceilinged and spacious bedrooms have a choice of en suite bathrooms and shower rooms, remote controlled A/C and heating, TVs and balconies. A choice of views is available and each room is well appointed with large windows to provide you with a sense of space and light not found in many modern hotels anywhere today.
We have a range of dining options to suit all moods and palates. From simple, informal dining in Il Giardino pool and garden cafe or afternoon tea in the garden to a more formal offer in the Windsor restaurant. Whichever you choose all dishes are seasonal, local as far as possible for a small island and delicious.

This was my 4th visit to the Imperial Hotel since 2014 and I was intending to return every year at this time to celebrate my birthday. I had heard a rumour on the internet that it had been bought and the new owne wais going to turn it into a residence for the elderly later this year. I was stunned to find out that the new owner had informed the staff the Friday before we arrived on the Sunday that the Hotel would be closing the following Friday. The staff were extremely upset about this and then the owner told them on the Wednesday that he wanted all the guests out by Thursday. The staff were unbelievably helpful and professional and found us rooms in a nearby hotel and paid for a taxi to take us there. I have never wanted to return to any other hotel but this one was wonderful, shabby chic at its best and the staff were marvelous. This was the oldest hotel in Malta (152 years old) and it will be sadly missed by all the guests who returned time after time. Collapse

This is our next stay at the Imperial Hotel, although the rooms need some renovation the service in this hotel is excellent, It is very clean and all the persons who work in this hotel are extremely nice, Gilbert on the reception is so helpful as well as the two ladies. The bar is great, the restaurant offer nice Maltese food. The reception area and the saloons are like a Palace and not a three star. So you can enjoy in this hotel a beautiful environment with a good service at a three star price if you are not very demanding on old fashion rooms!!! Collapse

When we arrived the receptionists said they had no booking for us. I was shocked and showed them our booking made 8 weeks previously (through On The Beach) for a garden room. They were rather abrupt and disappeared to a back room leaving us feeling a bit unwelcome after a 12 hour journey. 10 minutes later we were relieved to be given a key to a pool view room. The room was quite large, kept very clean and mostly very quiet. The mattresses were very hard though and we could feel the springs so we were very uncomfortable. I asked for duvets to soften the bed and was told that the housekeeper would sort it out but nothing was done and it was on the third day that I discovered a cupboard on the corridor full of old duvets and put a couple on the bed myself. Towels were changed daily and beds made. The reception area was quite beautiful. Good WiFi signal. Staff mostly friendly. The location of the hotel is excellent- a 10 minute walk to the waterfront and the ferry to Valletta and there are also plenty of cafes and restaurants on the waterfront. Dimech bus stop is a few yards away from the hotel -you can take the 21 bus to Valletta. From the waterfront there are buses that go all over the island and cost €1.50 for a 2 hour journey! Collapse

I'll give this place 1 star because it was actually open, and we did get a room. Not a garden room, as booked (at a premium rate), nor a room that had been cleaned properly, with beds that could properly be slept in. Nor did it have a shower with doors on (it did have 1 door, just a gap where the other one should have been. Never mind they're coming to fix it tomorrow we were told, every day of our stay!). Noisy and with staff who are clearly confused as to who is there for the convenience of whom, maybe they have been told the guests are there only to make their employment meaningful. The Imperial is a throwback to the days of glory and empire, and was probably at some time in the past a prestigious place to stay. Someone needs to inform the owners and staff, those days were long, long ago. If you are going there, enjoy your stay, but take a tent and a camp bed. It may be some people enjoyed far superior service and accommodation than we did, and that there are good facilities here, we saw no evidence of that at all. There were a number of students staying, and we were (reliably) informed that it is often used for student accommodation. Perhaps that is the answer, it is a hostel, not a hotel, they just keep misplacing the 'S'. Collapse
