Graded a 5 Star Guest House by the AA in recognition of the excellent customer service, as well as superb levels of comfort. The Howbeck prides on providing a delightful retreat where the warmth and friendliness of the Howbeck team are always apparent. With an aim to provide the kind of service you would only expect in some of the top luxury Windermere & Lake District guest houses. From the moment you arrive you will be made to feel welcome and to feel at home.
All of the rooms are well appointed and spacious. The three ground floor rooms provide easier access for the less able, and every single room provides a comfortable retreat after a day out and about exploring the stunning scenery of the Lake District. Each room has been individually styled with fully co-ordinated soft furnishings and ensuite bathrooms, some with luxury spa baths, crisp white linen and snug quilts adorn all beds, while cosy towelling bathrobes are available throughout your stay. There is also a TV & wireless broadband available for guests. Although being in the heart of the Lake District, it would be a travesty to miss its dramatic scenery and beautiful landscapes, despite the temptation of the luxury and comfort of The Howbeck.
The Howbeck's award-winning restaurant is the perfect place to start your day. Whether you're planning to hike, cycle, sail or simply sightsee, what better way to set yourself up than with a hearty Cumbrian platter. Whatever your reason for visiting the Lake District, the team at the Howbeck will go to every length to make your stay comfortable, to see that you are looked after and are confident that you will not be disappointed.

Hotel is immaculately kept, really classy. It's just out of town too so very easy to walk to and from. Parking at the back is a bit tricky to get in and out of but no big deal. Definitely will be back

A first visit by us and stayed in the Meregill room, it was nicely furnished and decorated and the nice touch of a small sherry decanter and bottled water was enjoyed. A good bathroom with decent facilities. Breakfast was excellent all freshly cooked, pre-order hot food the night before, service efficient rather than warm and friendly. The room proved to be hot stuff, too hot! Managed to turn off the radiator in the bedroom via the thermostat but the bathroom had a large towel radiator with no thermostat and it was far too hot to turn the metal valves off at the base. We thought it may be on a timer and cool down at a certain time but sadly it didn't so had to sleep with the windows open as it was stifling and then road noise then became a slight issue, otherwise a superb stay. We stayed for one night on our way over to grasmere. We were greeted by Gosha, who was very warm, welcoming and professional. We stayed in the Retreat which we found was superb and very private with a separate entrance and lovely water feature which would be lovely to sit and listen to in the warmer months. Very clean and comfortable with a lovely big sleigh bed, small couch and dining table. Also a little mini bar in the room which we made use of. A lovely big jacuzzi bath with mood lighting which was so relaxing. We dined at Riva for the second time and highly recommend as the food is delicious and service is impeccable. Gosha helped again by ordering us a taxi. Breakfast is served to the room and was delicious and plentiful. This was our second stay and we will be back. Thank you Howbeck. Collapse

Stayed at the howbeck 'retreat' suite yesterday as a celebration for our anniversary. We had booked for 2 nights but we're so disappointed that we checked out after 1 night. We paid £200 per night which was costly but liked the look of the spa bathroom. Had a spa bath at 3.30pm and afterwards wanted shower to wash hair and my husband also needed to use it. The shower ran cold. Called reception (from mobile as there is no room phone), to be told most people have either a bath or a shower not both and that it has separate boiler which would refill if we waited 30-45 mins. This was not acceptable. After 3 hours still no water not even warm. Had to wash hair in freezing water and was delayed for our restaurant reservations. I asked to complain and to speak to manager. (No manager on site, she left a note). To add insult to injury the t.v did not work in spa bathroom. I was livid to be told by receptionist that they knew TV was broken but they were waiting until the room was not booked! I looked on tripadvisor previous reviews and was furious to see that another customer raised the same issues 10 days ago but nothing done about it. The rooms decor needs updating and also the facilities (no dressing table area, dark lightening, a dated clock, DVD player?!, only 5 basic channels). No where near a 5 star. Once we checked out early the manager was not even bothered, offered no reduction. We were just glad not to have to stay another night. We have now checked into cedar manor hotel and it is a different class. Shame a special occasion spoilt, poor customer service. Collapse

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Howbeck on the 5/11/16 for one night. The room was so lovely and clean, the bed was so comfy and the breakfast was amazing. Definitely coming back here again for longer next time :)
