Having read some reviews after booking The Retreat I was slightly apprehensive, but all my fears were completely unfounded. I ordered the romantic package & everything was in place for our arrival. The room was spotless as was the bathroom. Parking was easy, plenty of room around the back. The bed is very comfortable, it has a very similar mattress to the one I have, there is no way anyone could 'feel the springs' as a previous reviewer claimed. Maybe the mattress is a brand new one. The floor is quite slippery, but there is a sign in the room warning people as such, it caused us no problems & we didn't manage to get it wet at all, the water stayed in the bathroom where it should & we wiped out feet on the mat when we walked in....... The bathroom does have a loose tile by the sink, but it is one of those things that will take a day to fix, if I was told I couldn't have the room due to a loose tile, I would have been left scratching my head, it's nothing major & is easily avoided as it's in the corner of the room. The bath is awesome, a nice relaxant after a day out, the shower is big & there is enough room for two people easily, the drain did not overflow at all. The only way it would have, would be from standing on the plug hole!! Breakfast is a great start to the day, you get so much food that you don't need to eat again until 6pm! Room was always tidied when we went out for the day, the staff were more than pleasant, we will be back! :-) Collapse

Just spent 3 nights at The Retreat at The Howbeck, £500 including breakfast. The Retreat is a large bedroom/ with sofa and dining table with its own private entrance at the back of the main guesthouse, The Howbeck. It has a small outside area which looks onto the car park. The patio area was unkempt looking, needed weeding. The room is nice, huge bed, although the bed was not made properly any day, looked like the bedclothes were just pulled up. Bulb not working in main light and there had been a flood upstairs so wallpaper was off wall outside bathroom, this was pointed out to me by the foreign girl who showed us the room, but no attempt at any discount was given. Bathroom lovely with huge jacuzzi bath, however the tv was stuck on the same channel, also shower tray overflows so had to use two towels each morning to mop it up. First night awakened by two staff members having their cigarettes outside our room-Definitely will not be returning here for this price.. for us the wow factor was not there... Collapse

Stayed in the retreat room, no hairdryer in the room, no clock Either. The solid oak floor they say is luxury was a mess, it is so slippy when dry never mind wet is a serious hazard. Breakfast was not included in the price of the room which is not worth the nearly £200 a night price tag. Oh and the breakfast was wrong compared to what we ordered. The latch on the window was missing, half the bulbs in the bathroom didn't work, a tile sticking up in the bathroom with grout. Wallpaper missing off the wall which to be fair was due to upstairs flooding the room above. All in all very disappointed!!! Collapse

We stayed here in September for our 1st Wedding Anniversary. We booked into the Meregill room . On arrival we were taking to the room it was awful. We had paid 300 pound for 2 nights. The room was nothing like the website, them pictures are years old. The decor was tired, lights were out a big stain on the carpet chipped furniture, a cracked sink the list goes on. We upgraded the second night for a fee to the retreat this was disgraceful to . Bad floors ripped sofa and cracked tiles. The owners clearly don't care about standards. On the other hand the manageress and receptionist were lovely they could not do enough for us. The state and price of this hotel totally ruined our 1st honeymoon do not go here if you think it's luxury far from it. I don't know how it gets its rating it is awful . The only thing I would say is the manageress and receptionist were very good and so understanding and accommodating knowing how upset I was the couldn't do enough for us. Collapse
