In a nutshell, the hotel is below standard of what I've come to expect from a Holiday Inn. IHG have put a lot of effort (and marketing money) behind revitalizing the HI brand, certainly in the majority of places I've been lucky enough to visit before - but sadly those funds have obviously not reached Thessaloniki yet. To be fair, it would probably need quite a significant investment and I'm guessing with the continuing economic crisis in Greece - evident everywhere really - there probably isn't spare cash sitting around to invest. Sad reality is, other hotels are investing and there are better choices out there. The check-in experience was efficient - and the Front Desk were happy and smiling - but the lobby truly does give an indication on what else to expect when you go up those elevators which seem to catapult you back in time. As the doors open, you would be forgiven for thinking you had got lost in Disney's Haunted Mansion - and depending on what floor you are on, you can even get a stench of smoke to add to the ambience. I can't believe hotels here even allow people to continue smoking, including in public areas - and with that in mind, it's even more concerning that throughout my whole trip recently, I wasn't once alerted to a test alarm like they do every week or so at hotels in the U.K. I would just hope they can cope if something would happen, God forbid! We were lucky to have been upgraded - but thank heavens for that - as frankly, I really would have no desire to see any of their standard rooms let alone anything else. The rooms seem to be so dated, I was half expecting an old visitor to pop up from somewhere, returning back since their death in 1980! The bathroom too was old dark marble and it's lucky the amenities brought some form of current life back into the battered room! Breakfast - oh dear. Again, the quality is horrendous. They do have everything, but it's really not worth the price (€15 euro per person) - certainly not for what I've come to expect in other hotels of 4* standard. In fact, the pastries are almost as hard as the marble in the bathroom! That is bad - especially if you can get past the half an hour on average you'll spend having breakfast in such a dark, depressing room first thing in the morning! I will spare the staff my opinion, but as you can appreciate, that wasn't exactly a pleasant experience either - in fact, it made the overall experience even more disappointing, as in fairness, I've stayed in other dated properties - however, for what they lack in product or facilities, they tend to make up and compensate with such good service - sadly this isn't one of those hotels! The location of the hotel is probably their only slight positive - although it still takes around 20-25 minutes to walk into the city centre, 15-20 minutes to walk to OneSalonica Outlet Mall - and about 5-10 minutes to the nearest train station (Central Station). The airport too is rather close - about 20 minutes by taxi at a cost of €20-23, the best in investment I made during my trip to this city - getting out of it - and as far as I could from this hotel! It was by car though - not by horse and carriage although I was half expecting that to turn up as I waited to make my departure! Collapse

We just spent 4 days in Thessaloniki staying at this hotel. The hotel is located on one of the busiest streets of the city (Monastiriou Avenue, a part of Egnatia Avenue) which (i.e., for the last 5+ years) has been consumed by the upheaval brought on by the citywide constructions, digs and holes for the underground metro. For that problem, which makes access to the hotel and navigation of the surrounding streets harder, nothing can be done except patience. But the services of this property leave a lot to be desired: the a/c in our room would not work-I received 3 different responses on 3 different occasions from the reception staff about the reason, none of which was focused on resolving the situation. With the a/c not functioning, we opened our terrace door: the noise coming into the room (we were on the 5th floor but still) was enormous, even in the middle of the night-and so were the fumes of the buses and the cars below. There is no coffee pot in the room. The breakfast buffet was ok-but the coffee was TERRIBLE, even the selections from the coffee machines (i.e., espresso, etc). The cost of one orange juice from the mini bar was 3.5 euros, extraordinarily expensive even in comparison to other cities and hotels in other countries. The reception staff was generally disinterested and unhelpful. One very important fact is that the hotel has both smoking and nonsmoking floors. Our room was, unfortunately, on a smoking floor and guests took full advantage of the fact. I don't know how strict they are about enforcing the no-smoking policy, but you do have the option. There is also a gym-I did not visit it, but the location and the number of cars make it hard to run outside unless it is Sunday morning, and you have the time to walk down to the corniche. On the plus side, the hotel is within walking distance from the train station (10 minutes max), and the western edges of the city's vibrant downtown (10-25 min., Frangon street, Ladadika, Modiano arcade, Aristotelous square, the harbor, etc). Also, on Langada avenue, to the left of the hotel there is the best bougatsa place in the city, to Xryso. Collapse

I and my partner spent the nights of 7-13 October at the Holiday Inn as part of an organized trip in a group of 34 people. So we did not choose the hotel nor can I related to a price as it was part of a package. However I can say that the staff we courteous helpful friendly and professional. The room was comfortable and roomy with the notable exception of the bathroom which was small. Neither I or my spouse are large people so managed OK but for several bigger members of our group it would have been a tight squeeze. Perhaps there are rooms with more spacious restrooms as we had no need I did not check. The breakfast (also part of the package) was very good with a wide selection of eggs, cheeses, fruits and fruit drinks, dried fruits, cereals and sweet cakes, pancakes and french toast. The only thing lacking for us to complete the amenities was the lack of a coffee maker in the room. Coming back after a days touring we stopped at a coffee place across the road and took up to the room. We were in a room that faced the back which was very quiet. We did not use the dining room for lunch or diner. In short with the proviso above I can highly recommend the hotel. Collapse

We stayed here for two nights and were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite. The room was a good size with plenty of space to relax - which was good as we had solid rain all the time. Wifi was excellent and there were plenty of plug points. It was nice to be able to relax in a bath too. Downsides - no tea or coffee making facilities in the room! That was a suprise. The rooms are a little dated and AC was noisy but all in all it was good value. We didn't have breakfast here but had dinner both nights. Ioanna (I think) in the restaurant was just superb, helpful and friendly and very efficient. Especially when she managed to get me some extra chocolate cake the food was very good value and decent portions. The hotel is about 5-10 mins walk from the train station and maybe 20 minutes to the area around the White Tower. Collapse
