We had a week-long stay at this hotel (2 pax) I do appreciate that the standard of the Holiday Inn hotels in the US is well below that of Holiday Inn in Europe and in Asia; but this hotel management and service attitude is at the bottom level of a 3rd world country - The room interiors are dark, clunky, totally unsuitable for anything longer than a 1 night stay. On can't even sit comfortably at what is supposed to be a desk, so I had to do my emails sitting on the edge of my bed. Now here it comes: There was a complete power outage during the night (car hit a power pole outside the hotel). In the morning I witnessed a conversation between the (attorney) Hotel GM with a guest, where the GM said: "The laws of New Jersey do not allow him to go from room to room at night to warn his guests if there is a problem" - As a consequence of this power outage, and the hotel not having a back-up generator, we were asked to move for one night to the nearby Ramada Hotel. Arriving at the Ramada, the staff there had no advance information of our arrival at al, nor were they able to call the Holiday Inn (telephones were down). After some rather hefty discussions, plus several personal mobile phone calls by a very helpful Ramada staff to a Holiday Inn staff ..waiting and waiting ..we finally were able to get a room, ...business appointments had to be changed because of all this mess. Next day we went back to the Holiday Inn in the early afternoon, and we got back our old room keys. Power was restored, but wifi was down. We remained within the hotel premises. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant. We were within clear sight of the front desk staff, and yet: AT 1 am SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO ENTER MY ROOM, AND A LOUD FEMALE VOICE SCREAMING: WHAT IS YOUR NAME? It was the Duty Manager, - in her infinite wisdom she decided at 1 am to make a roll call of some of her guests, A phone call would have done, or at least she could have identified herself at the door first. These are Rambo methods; this is unworthy of an international hotel group, this is adding insult to injury. No apologies were given. Whilst I am at it: we had several meals at the hotel restaurant. The female service staff there are all friendly, courteous and pleasant. It is the male staff who all seem to have this attitude that they are doing the guests a favour, careless, arrogant, not smile. The experiences in this hotel remind of the press conference given by Dr Dao's lawyer about the United Airline incident: treat guests with respect - after all, the hotel staff and the non-apologetic abrasive hotel GM, are all paid by us ..the guests Collapse
comfy big room, but noisy, in need of care, and not well thought out

I stayed here one night as I was arriving into Newark late. The staff are friendly and the room was big/comfortable but there were many things not at all well though out and lots of little items that needed maintenance. For example, one of the wall sockets (the one by sink!) was loose. The roller blind came crashing down on my head in the morning when I tried to raise it - the maintenance person tried to just stick it back up but I pointed out that it will just crash down on the next person. The aircon is right next to the desk - so if it's on you freeze, if it's off you boil while working. The in-room service charge is expensive - an additional $8 plus 20% tip. Considering there aren't many options for food around here that seems excessive. Plus the room overnight was very noisy - I was facing the highway but also there was a loud electrical hum all night. It was like listening to bees buzzing and so I found it hard to sleep - until I put on my noise cancelling headphones. Collapse
It's a Major Chain Hotel

And as such is not remarkable but my stay was pleasant enough. The front desk staff was friendly, the room was clean and reasonably comfortable. I came in around 930 PM on a Sunday and they had my online reservation at their fingertips within seconds of my stepping up to check in. I stayed the night, got up early and went to work. Holiday Inn Airport in Newark met my needs and everything was as it should have been. And that's often as much as one may ask from any major chain hotel at this level. I give 4 stars simply because 3 implies a so-so experience. My own recent stay was somewhat better than that. I don't stay at a Holiday Inn to be pampered but I do go there to sleep. Funny as that may sound, it's surprising how elusive a good night's sleep can be in some places. I slept well during the night of my stay at Newark's Airport Holiday Inn. Collapse

Given the location noise can be an issue but its next to the main road and air rail and airport which we knew before we booked. Breakfast is pretty basic but did the job. Staff were helpful in the restaurant but could be bit more happy! As far as hotel gyms go this one was excellent - good cardio equipment, great selection of free weights, swiss balls, medicine balls, matts etc. Collapse
