By far and away the best thing about this hotel is the staff, most of whom would be better suited working in more upmarket establishments. The customer service levels are very high and service is delivered with professionalism, charm and a smile, with confidence and without the creepy obsequiousness sometimes found in a 5 star. Full marks. But real estate isn't the jewel in Holiday Inns' crown and needs a massive capex injection. I've no idea whether a hotel in Ipswich would recoup that investment but they need to either run the hotel properly or put it on the corporate disposals list (and you can't help wondering if it's already there). At the moment it is under their brand but I can't imagine even they feel it delivers the brand promise. Pretty much all the window frames need replacing; it's the first Holiday Inn I remember visiting without aircon; the carpets were doubtless fine when they were fitted (1953?); there is no luggage trolley (another first for me in a Holiday Inn); the food at breakfast was unappetising (and some bacon tasted definitely off and I didn't risk it); the place has a Royston Vasey feel about it. There is good parking (though it wasn't busy so the car park was half empty; the parking spaces are, as always, too small - I wouldn't have liked it had the car park been full). It wasn't awful by any means - comfortable bed, and I slept despite stifling heat and lack of aircon - but it was like visiting Holiday Inn's poverty-stricken elderly sister. I still paid £90+ for a night, though (admittedly booking only that morning). There is competition in Ipswich and surrounding area but it probably is a micro-market with its own rules; I'd be very curious about whether this particular establishment makes an operating profit. I've posted some pictures which probably speak for themselves. One other major gripe: I travel with a lot of equipment and always check religiously that I can have a room on the ground floor and near reception. I am sometimes given an 'accessible' room and that's fine with me. But centralised booking systems are utterly useless at getting this message through to the hotels and I get heartily sick of arriving at places exhausted, with a large station wagon to unpack - only to find that I've been given a room a long way from anywhere. What is so difficult about this?!?! If central booking systems can't cope with non-complying bookings then it should be a lot easier to find the hotel's direct number on the web. On this occasion an overworked young lady coping with a flood of simultaneous arrivals solved the problem for me but only because I arrived before the room I was eventually allocated was occupied by someone else. And I'm grateful to the male staff member who helped with my equipment (which fortunately on this occasion was a 'light' kit). Collapse

I was at the hotel at the same time as the review headed "tired". We were part of a group of 23 and found the staff to be pleasant and helpful at all times. We had no complaints about the quality or standard of the food and the service in the restaurant. The hotel put themselves out and accommodated our request for the group to have a hot breakfast at 6am! We have used this hotel for this event every year for the past 7 years and they have never let us down Collapse

Check-in took a while as there quite a few people to be checked-in with just one receptionist. Several other staff interrupted the receptionist while she was tying to check guests in, but they didn’t stop to assist with checking in! There were dirty beer and wine glasses outside room doors in the corridor. Corridors were tired with scuffed walls. On entry to the room, there was a musty, stale cigarette odour. One of the table lamps did not work. Beds were very soft but had clean linen. Room was on the small side for a twin. The shower room was great apart from the extractor fan did not work. The worst thing about our stay was that we were part of a group who had booked an evening meal in one of the function rooms. The soup starter looked like it had been microwaved from the way the bowl looked. The roast pork main was unpleasant with cheap meat and vegetables that looked like they had come from a Tesco Value steam bag. It took ages between courses. All in all, the meal was unpleasant. Breakfast was under-cooked and tasteless, but plentiful. Free Wi-Fi was consistently good in speed and connectivity throughout the bits of the hotel I used it in. The hotel isn’t nasty, just tired. The staff were mainly pleasant and service orientated; especially in the bar. This was an ‘okay’ stay for one night in a hotel local to where we were working. Collapse
