Right on the edge near the A64 with easy access to monks cross and York centre, found this hotel to be on the basic side in a quiet location with average comfort, it reminded me a bit of the 1st generation lodges back in the day. Having experienced the HIE 4th generation hotels , this was going to be hard to follow but feel this place could do with a refit to make things fresher giving a more upmarket feel . The welcome was great, breakfast was fine with a self help selection of hot and cold along with tea/coffee/toast etc and should satisfy most people ,the whole place seemed clean and most public areas maintained. Rooms did seem more compact than previous experiences and just had that ‘lodge’ feel and look about it although all expectations were to hand-please note it is shower only with no bath Struggled a bit with comfort and found the bed to more of a traditional low sprung type double with some unforgiving pillows which again takes things back a few years . It has been a while since a visit to York, although easy access and quiet location was a bonus, undecided if a return visit here would bring me back again. Collapse

Visited Holiday Inn in York mid October. Man in reception was very welcoming. Room was good size and clean with all amenities as expected. Bathroom was great size and clean. We were on ground floor and were woken up around 7am on the first morning by someone wheeling out the bins in the car park however it was still a very pleasant stay and this didn't ruin it. We were advised by the man on reception to use the Monks Cross park and ride service (2 min drive from hotel) rather than park in York City Centre (10 min drive from hotel) as it was cheaper so this saved us a lot of money so I would recommend this. This service can't be used after 9pm though so if you wanted to come back after this time then keep this in mind as the park and ride closes its gates so you can't access your car. Breakfast was simple but sufficient. Contained standard breakfast buffet type food and drinks. Overall a pleasant stay and would recommend for weekends away. Collapse

We stopped for 1 night while visiting York, We were greeted by James who was very friendly & helpful. The room was an average HI Express with everything you needed inc tea/coffee which could be replenished in reception. As the breakfast was included we didn’t expect much but was pleasantly surprised to get sausage, beans & scrambled eggs, cereals, fruit, yogurt, croissants etc with various teas & coffees, it was all self service and quickly replenished by Andrea who did a good job and was very helpful and chatty with the children. There is a large car park that is used by the hotel and Toby Carvery next door. Within a 5 minute drive you can get too the Monkcross Park & Ride and shopping centre, where you will find Sainsburys, Asda lots of shops & restaurants inc Frankie & Bennys, Giraffe, Nando and a Chinese,it takes approx 10 minutes to get into York We wouldn’t hesitate to use this hotel when visiting York again. I spent a night at the Holiday Inn Express, just a short trip from York train station, for work purposes. The building looks dated outside, however it is reasonably modern inside. The service I experienced here was warm, welcoming and efficient; nothing was too much hassle and I was even given a toothbrush and toothpaste free of charge as I had forgotten my own. When I went to the front desk to check out, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the concierge had already ordered my taxi and it was only five minutes away. As this was my first trip to York, this level of attentiveness was most helpful and was greatly appreciated. The room I stayed in was functional and well presented, unfortunately there was some damp in the corner, dust on the headboard and a most horrendous smell coming from the bathroom sink whenever I ran the water. These are my only complaints, and for the price I don't think these were huge issues. The room had a reasonably comfortable bed, a tv, a hair-dryer, and tea and coffee making facilities, which is ideal when staying away for business. The wifi was sporadic, but was strong enough for basic browsing. The breakfast buffet was just fine, although I did not see the option for vegetarian sausages until it was too late and I think this signage should be made clearer to guests as I ended up having a breakfast I did not want. There was enough variety to suit the majority of guests, young and old alike. I will be staying here again when I have to return to York. Collapse
