If virgin trains had had the signs working to indicate the seat was reserved it would have helped... The hotel was superb and the staff helpful. We stayed 5 nights at the Holiday Inn Express Southwark. Due to last minute changes to our travel plans there was very little choice of available, reasonably priced, centrally located properties in London. We opted for this hotel largely because of the location, well knowing that renovation work is under way. The location is indeed excellent, with Southwark and Blackfriars metro stations within walking distance. We arrived at Luton Airport which has a direct train to Blackfriars and departed from Heathrow, for which Southwark was a very convenient station. Tate Modern, Shakespeare Globe Theatre, St Paul's Cathedral and Borough Market are all close by. The Shard is not too far either. The area is good for walks along the Thames or getting a boat ride. We walked on foot everywhere, including to Covent Garden, Hyde Park etc., but if walking is not your thing the above mentioned tube stations and various buses close by, offer you a number of options. Check-in was hassle free and fast. The room was basic, but clean and reasonably comfortable. There is no safe and we had to use the desk to store our two large suitcases. There is no closed wardrobe either, but the coat hangers and hooks were sufficient for a short stay. Toiletries provided are very basic too, but let's not forget that this is a 3 star hotel. Towels could've been whiter and the air-conditioner properly set: no matter what temperature was selected on the thermostat, it was blowing freezing cold air, so we had to switch it off most of the time, even on hot days. At the time of our stay refurbishment of the hotel was taking place, including work on the facade. This generated some noise in the morning and during the day, but we were out most of the day so it didn't bother us. At night the room was quiet, which mattered most. Wi-fi signal strength and speed was good. Breakfast is included in the room rate and while the variety was limited and it was the same day after day, it was sufficient to keep us going till lunch. There is no shortage of eating options within a 5 -10 min walking distance from the hotel. A Coop supermarket is virtually across the road. Forca quick sandwic steps the French-based franchise Paul (bakery/patisserie) is few steps further. Starbucks, Wagamama (Asian cuisine), Carluccio (Italian), The Refinery (British modern)... are all nearby. Staff were polite and mostly helpful. All in all, the hotel location compensated for the limited facilities and my rating reflects its convenience more than the quality of the hotel itself. Collapse

I stayed here for three nights whilst on business nearby - it is very handy for the underground and close to the Tate Modern and the riverside shops and restaurants. The room was comfortable though dated, and there was no distraction as a result of the refurbishment works. The wifi worked well. The reception staff are very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast is simple and satisfying but by no means quality products. Also, the person on duty is slow in clearing tables so those arriving later have to hunt for a clear one. I know that this is London and that prices are higher but I cannot get away from the feeling that this stay was not good value for money. Plastic throw-away cups in the bathroom, cheap quality breakfast, low quality in-room tea/coffee, shower gel/hand wash in big tubes (no other toiletries). Further, the room was not cleaned properly on the first day of my stay - however, it was ok after I spoke to a member of staff. Collapse

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Southwark for just one night. We took the tube to Southwark Station; the hotel is just a couple blocks away - an easy 5 minute walk. When we arrived, we discover that the entire building was sheathed in scaffolding and plastic. (The hotel had a notice about the work on their website, but we booked thru Priceline, and were unaware of the construction until we arrived.) The only effect the construction had on our visit was that the hallway to our room had a strong paint/chemical smell and the window in our room was covered by the plastic (Luckily, it did not smell like paint in our room.) We were in an unremodeled(?) family room, which consisted of a double bed and sleeper sofa. When the sofa was open, there was no room to move around, and the desk was inaccessible. There was no place to open suitcases, other than on the beds. This room was fine for us (2 adults & 1 teenager) for one night, but I don't think it would be conducive to a happy vacation if a family were going to be in this room for an extended period of time. The beds and pillows were comfortable, and the AC in the room worked well. The wifi connection was pretty good. The bathroom was a decent size and the water pressure and temp were good. However, there was some mold in the shower and the drains made weird gurgling noises long after the water went down. We did not hear any noise from other guests during the night. Sounds from the street traffic were minimal after midnight. The nightly rate included breakfast - cereal, toast, eggs, beans, croissants, muffins, some fruit, juice, etc. This was served in the lobby's dining area. At 8:00am on a Saturday morning, there was plenty of room to sit. Couple things to be aware of: Southwark Street was loud until about midnight. I am not sure whether the remodeling will include new windows; if not, and if you are a light sleeper, you should request a room on the Prices Street side of building. If you have mobility issues, make sure that the staff knows that when they assign you to a room. In order to get to room 307, we took the lift to "3", turned a corner, went up a couple steps, down another 8 or 10 steps, went thru a door, and turned a corner before reaching our room. (It seemed like we were on Floor 2.5, not 3.) It appears as though rooms on the other end of the building are on the same level as the lift doors. The gentleman working the front desk on Friday night was very pleasant, as were the two guys who were there when we checked out on Saturday morning. It was kind of an uncomfortable situation though when I turned my keys in. I was asked to fill out a little card rating my experience at the hotel. The clerk handed it to me along with a pen and asked me to fill it out right then and there. I had to hand the card back directly to him, so he could clearly see what I wrote. (I gave it a decent rating but I also made notes about the mold in the shower.) It seems like there could be a better way to ask for clients' opinions than putting them on the spot like that. Other notes: There are a couple restaurants a block east on Southwark Street and there is a well-stocked Sainsbury's Local grocery store right around the corner from the hotel on Great Suffolk St. There is also a NatWest ATM about 1.5 blocks east on Southwark Street. Would I stay here again? Probably. For the most part, it was clean and comfortable, and was well-located. We got a great $100 deal on Priceline too, so that made it even more worth while. Collapse

We checked into the Holiday in Southwark on July 3 for 3 nights. We were greeted by a very outgoing and ready to help staff on site. Everyone that worked there seemed very pleasant. Special thanks to Filippo and Dalila. By American standards, the room was slightly on the smaller side, but it had been renovated and was comfortable for the 3 of us. There was a double bed with a double bed pull out and nice size desk in the room. The toilet room had been renovated as well. We really liked the quality of the bedding with nice sheets and plenty of full sized pillows. We found the room location on the 3rd floor in the front of the building very quiet as well. We had great (free Wi-Fi) in the room which worked very well. The AC unit worked fantastic and kept us cool when in the room. It was quite hot outside during our stay, so this was a welcome relief. We slept great! There were 5 or so safe deposit boxes in the lobby which were good but they could use a few more. We were lucky to get one and were able to hold onto it for the 3 nights we were there. Breakfast was included with our stay and was very good with a wide variety of options to eat for breakfast. The hotel has been undergoing modifications (construction) which is wrapping up and will be completed next month in August. Other than the wrap around the front of the property, there were no inconveniences that we experienced due to the construction. There are many sightseeing points close by near the hotel such as the Globe Theatre, The London Eye, Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Shard. We liked this place and would stay here again if in the area. Collapse

My fiancé and I stayed here just two days, Thank God, while we were visiting this part of London. I'm so glad it was only two days, had we book our full two weeks stay at this hotel, it would've been horrendous! Very below average hotel, not your typical Holiday Inn. The customer service is not good at all.The cleaning staff are very rude and disrespectful. The elevator/lift is tiny and repeatedly we've had to wait for the elevator/lift to drop off the cleaning people, quite a lot! Why are you using the only elevator for customers anyway? They inconvenience the hotel guests quite a bit! I don't know why management doesn't do anything to stop this!! They don't clean your room properly, the shower drain had hair in it. A couple of the towels had stains or were never taken to laundry. The food is subpar and looks like slop so we opted to eat breakfast elsewhere. Never staying here again, what a dump. Terrible!
