We stayed over for 2 nights at the Holiday inn Express whilst attending my daughters graduation ceremony at the Lighthouse centre, the position of the hotel, which was within walking distance, was ideal for this purpose, The welcome at reception when we arrived was warm and friendly, and our rooms were spotlessly clean, having said that our room was really cold when we arrived and setting up the heating system was very hit and miss and we ended up with cold air blowing out for half of our stay, which was a bit unpleasant as the cold draft from the window was very noticeable, the shower room was spacious and clean with plenty of hot water, though there isn't a heated towel rail so towels tend to stay damp once used. we found the beds and pillows to be very comfortable and the linen spotlessly clean. Once we had settled into our rooms we came down to the bar area at around 2.30pm to see if we could get something to eat, we found the service at the bar to be a bit indifferent, we were offered the choice of pizza or a bag of crisps for our lunch, we were then told to get coffee from the machine on the other side of the room, but were not told how to use the machine before the bar server disappeared, we worked it out in the end but it was a niggle we could have done without after a long journey. The pizza took quite a time to appear but when it did, it was freshly cooked and delicious. We dined in-house for the first evening, the food was ok, the service was good, but the ambience in the dining room was zero, not somewhere I could hand on heart recommend but there are plenty of place to eat in Poole so not an insurmountable problem, Breakfasts, we all agreed were more than adequate with plenty of tasty choices. We did make one big error which was to leave the 'do not disturb' notice on the door by mistake on the first morning, and as this didn't seem to be queried by staff, we ended up having to make our own beds and not have any tea milk and sugar top ups ..it was of course our own fault and we won't be making that mistake again!!!. all in all our stay was satisfactory, and for a short break we would be happy to return. I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions. It is more then adequate. It serves a purpose. I do not like to write negative reviews. More often than not if I have a poor experience, I simply do not return. On this occasion I need to make a point. I have a booking through booking.com. It's a pre paid rate. I spoke to the hotel today and explained that I needed for personal reasons to move my reservation from one night to the next. This was due to my having to assist and help my terminally ill mother. For one night. The hotel has rooms tonight at the same rate I booked. It has rooms tomorrow night at the same rate. This hotel has refused to exercise a really straightforward discretion. They will not move my booking at no loss to them. It is no loss to this large chain. In simple terms, I find it quite sad that a large organisation cannot see the unfortunate issue here. Booking.com were absolutely no help. Nor were the hotel. Poor and sad behaviour. Needless to say, I will not be returning. Collapse
