Our trip to Orlando started with us going to the wrong Holiday Inn...a simple phone call to confirm which held our reservations and we were on our way! Thanks to the phone call Doris greeted us by name when we walked in the door. After a laugh about our mistake and some conversation, Doris had us checked in and on our way. Our room was small, but comfortable. The room completely satisfactory. When we used the sink we found it wouldn't turn off. On the way out the door to lunch we told Doris our problem and she promised to take care of it. Upon returning from lunch, Doris was trying to call us to let us know our problem was fixed....Doris upgraded our room to a suite! Doris went out of her way to make our vacation memorable. She was sweet from the moment we walked in the door. I am sure we will be back to Orlando again and thanks to Doris, Holiday Inn Express will get our business! Collapse

My wife, sister-in-law and I stayed at this hotel for 10 nights in July with a view to making the most of the Universal Theme Parks nearby. The best part about this hotel was it's proximity to the Universal Parks. The hotel offers a free shuttle to and from the parks throughout the morning and evening which we used on a few days. The shuttle was fairly reliable. It takes around 25-30 minutes to walk to Universal Citywalk which was great (but sometimes a little hot!). We also used the Uber app for any further drives that we wished to take which was very reasonably priced and saved us money as we did not need to pay $20 parking at Universal. We were very happy with the cleanliness of our room and received fresh towels everyday. We opted for a double twin room which was a good size for 3 people but didn't leave much room for hanging around in. This suited us as we were out at the parks or exploring Orlando rather than sitting in the hotel room. The buffet breakfast was great with lots of choice including fruit, cooked items, cinnamon rolls, cereals, muffins, bagels and fresh pancakes cooked right before your eyes! The breakfast did not vary much from day to day. There was always a table to sit at no matter what time we went for breakfast. The pool was very nice and bigger than we expected with quite a few loungers and chairs around it. We enjoyed relaxing by the pool in the sun. There are a few shops and restaurants nearby the hotel if you don't fancy traveling far for dinner or need some snacks/supplies: Starbucks, Wendy's, Walgreens, Kobi steak house and a sports bar. Over all we would recommend this hotel for anyone looking to make the most of the Universal parks while on a budget. This hotel made it possible to enjoy Universal Parks and Orlando without a car. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the continental breakfast was hot and plentiful, the staff were friendly and smiling, and the free shuttles to the park offered stress free transportation to the parks. And if you are looking to save money by eating non-park, non-touristy food, there is a Wendy's next door just yards from the swimming pool. As a Universal Partner resort, there is a kiosk where you can get information about the parks, buy tickets, and get your shuttle boarding passes for the next day. The parking lot was spacious and easy to find a space. I would recommend it to anyone going to Universal. Both Disney and Universal have really put the "hard sell" on their own resorts to get practically ALL of your vacation dollars, and honestly there are some perks to staying on-site. But there are perks to staying off site too, like cheaper food at the Wendy's next door and proximity to real civilization. Staying here you might get treated better than one of the hordes of guests on-site. I get the feeling that the push to get people staying onsite has really cut into the market share for offsite hotels. But that's where you can benefit. For instance, we went to the pool just about every day we were there, and it was either sparsely occupied or we had the whole thing to ourselves. Not having one ourselves, we had about as much fun in the pool as we did at the parks (one of our kids had just completed swimming lessons and anxious to show off). The continenal breakfast was amazing. They had all sorts of healthy selections, but c'mon, you're on vacation. Go right to the hot cinnamon rolls! Are they as premium as Cinnabon? Well, no, but they're free! During the shuttle ride, a whole ton of people were always getting on and off at the La Quinta. Maybe they have some super deals, but we had a relaxing, completely uncrowded stay (for July in Orlando it was the best you're going to get) at Holiday Inn Express. Would go back in a heartbeat. My two young daughters and I spent two nights here while doing a one-day visit to Magic Kingdom (we were en route to a different vacation destination). This is a high rise hotel located very close to Universal. I agree with the other reviewers who said that the rooms are very small. There was no closet and the shower was a stand-up only. For that reason, it is fine for a night or two but any longer and you might start to feel pretty cramped. The hotel is dated and in need of a renovation. However, with all that being said, the rooms were clean, the hotel was quiet for being as full as it was, and the hot breakfast was very good (more selections than a Hampton, which is where we usually stay). The hotel is a bit tricky to find at night if you are coming from the airport and unfamiliar with the area, but overall it is in a good location. It took us about 15-20 minutes with traffic to get to the Magic Kingdom from there, and Universal is right across the street. Collapse
Comparable to a Seedy Motel

I was super excited for my trip to Orlando this past May. It had been 11 years since I've been to Disney and I was looking forward to being in sunny Florida. An IHG representative actually booked my stay at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites near Universal Studios because I had agreed to take a timeshare tour so I was getting the room at a discounted rate. After seeing my room, I still think I paid too much for it. I was led to believe that I would get free shuttle service to and from Disney World (apparently, the IHG rep did not know the difference between Disney and Universal). I was also told that my room would have a king-size bed. Upon checking in, I found out that rooms with king-size beds were all booked...uh, okay. The front desk clerk was not pleasant at all and did not even give me much information. When I got to my room, it was dark and dreary and looked like a seedy motel. I had a lovely view of Wendy's! The bed was poorly made. You know you've stayed at the wrong hotel when you have to remake the bed! The "firm" pillows were a joke. So, is their so-called safety deposit box. They're quick to remind you not leave valuables in your room yet, unlike most hotels, do not provide an adequate in-room safe. Don't bother bringing food back to the room either because there is no microwave or fridge. If you're over 5'5", you might as well just take a bath because the shower is only made for short people. The water pressure was awful, too. The "hot" breakfast was decent but nothing to write home about. You have the option to make your own pancakes using the pancake maker. I'd only recommend this if you like pancakes that taste like cardboard. The IHG rep also told me that there was a full restaurant on site...did she mean Wendy's??? There was really nothing I liked about this hotel. It seems far away from everything, the staff is unpleasant, the room is uncomfortable, and the price just wasn't worth it (even at the discounted rate!). If I had a choice, I would not have chosen the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites. Collapse
