The Holiday Inn Express, Oxford Road is in the centre of town situated amongst the student and more edgy bars - although don't let that put you off as its very convenient for the city centre, arena, hospitals and close enough for the northern quarter and canal street. The Express brand of Holiday Inn offers a general consistency across its brand. The rooms include the trademark pillow menu (hard or soft) and it strips back the little extras from the main brand, although not by much. The beds are still comfortable, rooms modern and stylish and a mixed self-service breakfast buffet is available in the morning - not as comprehensive as the main Holiday Inn brand at the city centre location (see previous posts) but good enough to get you going for the morning. As i said, the offer is basic but for a place to set down, get ready or crash out the hotel is quiet. I was on the 10th floor. There are only 2 lifts so peak periods, such as breakfast, can be a little slower. Check-in: I arrived at 9pm on a Sunday night, so it was quiet. I was dealt with quickly. The welcome was not as genuine or enthusiastic as the main Holiday Inn City Centre, slightly more pedestrian, but still better than a lot of places. I went up to my room.... only to find someone else was already in it. This was dealt with quickly by the reception, but really?! The room itself ticks all the boxes. It's clean, modern decor, good lighting (although the wall light next to the bed was not working and loose from the wall). The bathroom is modern with a walk in shower. Complimentary toiletries are provided on request. The lighting in the bathrooms needed a little time to warm up, so i tended to get up, put the lights on and make a coffee to kill a bit of time. The shower was powerful and refreshing, with large fluffy white towels. The bed is comfortable, pillow selection available and room temperature controllable, although the aircon unit did make some random 'bang' noises during the night. The downside of a sealed room with aircon is coming back later in the day and the room didn't feel overly fresh. Even though the hotel is smack bang in the middle of student bars, I didn't hear a thing and there was no rowdiness in the hotel. Downstairs a 24/7 store also means if you've forgotten anything it's convenient to pick up. The room also has basic tea/coffee making facilities, TV, desk for working at and a sofa. I stayed for 5 nights and apart from the little glitches had no problems. There is a bar downstairs in the basement (next to the reception) although it isn't really a bar area for socialising, more like a quick drink after a days travel. The few problems i had (lighting, shower not draining and check in) were all dealt with very quickly - I didn't have to ask twice, and these things occasionally happen. The duty managers seemed very good with customer experience, although some of the front desk staff were less so, but not bad overall. On check out, it was quick and easy. There had been problems with the airport due to the weather and its clear the manager had already been keeping an eye on it should any guest ask - which is great. Overall, Holiday Inn Express provides a reasonably priced, consistent offer. They are clearly investing in their brand, both physically (rooms) and in their customer service. The difference between this level of service and the next tier down is notable, with the Holiday Inn being more comfortable. Collapse

My friend and I stayed here as we were going to a gig at Sound Control. The hotel is really well situated, only a few minutes walk away from Oxford road station, and the venue was less than a minute away. There were several bars/ shops nearby so there was plenty of places to visit while we waited. The room was lovely, we paid for a twin room, all very clean and tidy. Only gripe with the room was the air conditioning made a grinding noise every so often. The reason I've removed a star is because the breakfast is quite poor, they only offer sausages, beans, and scrambled eggs for hot choices, this would be fine if the cold options were good, but that was really lacking also, especially the fruit... there was only apples or oranges. Would return though if we needed somewhere in this area of Manchester. Collapse

Booked it as we had a party at the Manchester university the whitworth hall,,exactly 13 mins walk,,,,failed to notice there's no parking on site,,,but there is a car park on open ground on the road opposite the hotel well guarded and they have a deal with the hotel £8 24 hrs instead of £20 So you need to go to car park opposite the hotel go till you see an old pub on the left brown tiles called the gal of little growie or something along those lines just immediately before pub turn left, take ticket and park up return to hotel and let them validate the ticket Reception Choose a room above the 5 th floor Manchester can be noisy we heard some noise but to be honest If you were asleep you wouldn't hear any thing, unless it was a week day, Really nice spacious room double bed with sofa bed not made up so good seating area, good size tv , good size shower although not powerful, but adequate tray with coffee etc kettle, Lighting in room not very bright so a bit dim if you want to get ready for a party, The reception area well you enter by automatic doors on oxford road there was road works right in front so no unloading of suitcases,,there's someone to greet you and reception is down stairs very pleasant, you will have to unload in the side street, be careful as only one side has an unloading bay,, Breakfast is in this area by reception and it's included in the price, good choice of hot drinks, juice but the plain water tasted musty,, Cheese bread jam yogurt danish pastries fruit buns fresh fruit hot stuff beans sausage scrambled egg Collapse

The hotel is easy to get to by car. Seems to located in the student area of Manchester. The room was clean, the staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast could have been better. Overall good value for money would stay again.

I normally stay close to the airport however decided on HIX Oxford Road for this 2 night stay between Christmas & N Year.. The hotel is in an okay area within walking distance of most city centre shopping and entertainment.. It's also close to the universities but I have to say it didn't feel that safe late at night... The room 1010 was pretty good very comfortable with a good view good TV and decent bathroom.. I had my nephew with me so used a twin room which had enough space. I didn't have eat in the hotel and neither did I bother with breakfast so can't comment... All in all comfortable stay in a different location from where I normally stay.. Collapse
