I'm not a complainer but on this experience I feel I have to review my stay with this hotel. I was booked in for 2 nights 21st and 22nd sept 16 and the hotel was pre booked by my company. Booking in at reception was ok. However getting to the bar and restaurant on my 1st night was the start of the pain. I ordered a San Miguel beer at the bar. It came in a straight unbranded glass. I asked the barman "any branded glass" and the reply was "no". No explaination or banter just "no". I was expecting a branded glass even under budget hotel standards. Obviously this group have not observed the industry "perfect poor" training. By the time I was half way down the glass it was flat. Branded glasses keep the beer fresher with the way the dimples on the bottom of the glass are set out. I looked at the menu to what I feel was a very limited choice. 2 starters...yes only 2 and a handful of main courses. I decided to go for garlic bread off the sides as a starter and the burger as a main. Garlic bread was very average however the burger I have to say was back street burger van quality and that's probably an big insult to the back street burger van. I'm not sure what meat content it was but I can honestly say I don't think I can remember the last time I've had worse. Poor poor poor quality for the price and I would not see this as value for money what so ever. The staff were fine but I didn't get anyone approach me asking was my meal ok. I didn't see the point in complaining at this stage as the standard of burger would off been set out by a higher level than the hotel itself. I went to my room for the evening. Breakfast - I wasn't expecting great things and planned NOT to have to scrambled egg, sausage and beans as the breakfast hot offering. Cereal and toast was my choice. However I did get a morning work out walking from one side to the other for various things that should be all together. Cereals one side, milk on the other. Toast on one side butter on the other. I could go on. Badly laid out. Evening meal - I remembered today was the 1st day of Autumn and went to a table in the restaurant to check if the menu had changed. It hadn't hence the title of my review. Here I was at a national UK hotel chain with a spring menu on the 1st day of autumn. Again not the staff fault a decision that had been made higher up. I left the restaurant deciding to look for something else and found the Vikings Landing pub about 3-4miles away. I didn't really want to drive but had one perfect pint of San Miguel in a branded glass and a Carvery meal which was 10/10 and all value for money less than what I paid at the holiday inn. When I got back to my room I thought I would have a cup of tea but to my disappointment the maid had not replaced the tea bags I used the night before and I don't drink coffee. On checking out the following morning I did mention the experience I had and the receptionist did show some concern and said she would pass the info on and add some points to my IHG card. I don't know what value of points she added as they are not really the issue here I just wanted value and didn't realise this was the quality of a holiday inn express . I stay away 2-3 nights a week with work and will be informing my company in future to avoid holiday inn for me where possible and if I have no choice in having to stay at one I WILL be eating out. My partner and I came to stay for 2 nights over a weekend for a Liverpool game. The stay was very pleasant, nice room (lighting could be better in bedroom), okay breakfast, however could be more variety. The only negative I have to say is its a little out of the way from main centre and of course the stadium (main reason we were there for) therefore we needed to use the hotel's taxi service. This was difficult on a busy Saturday night. The company said for us to walk to a particular pub away from the stadium so that it would be easier to pick us up from. However when we called they said sorry not running any of our taxis near stadium, all roads are closed. We made sure we walked to a pub or their choice where roads were all open. We found the pub to walk to and still they wouldn't pick us up. It took over an hour to find another taxi company to pick us up, one of your members of staff had to beg a different taxi company to pick us up not outside the stadium but at the pub originally discussed with the hotel's taxi company. We got in a taxi ordered finally from the hotel, different to who they normally use as their company refused to pick us up. We were picked up over 2 hours after the match. Staff friendly and peaceful, quiet hotel. Collapse

The room was a bit dated in decor and consisted of a double bed and a sofa made up as a bed for our 4yr old. It was very very uneven and uncomfortable, when I checked it was a quilt on top of a sofa with a sheet trying to disguise this. One thing we all noticed was how warm this hotel was...the room was oppressive and no fiddling with thermostat helped. All the public spaces were too hot really, staff were OK and room was clean. Added bonus was the free breakfast. Would I stay again...maybe but if I could get a premier inn at the same price I would probably opt for that instead. The bed was just a double and when trying to sit up in bed it kept moving away from wall, it was also a bit lumpy and uncomfortable. This was a groupon deal so it was at a good price, I don't think I could have overlooked the deficiencies if I had paid the daily advertised rate of £85. Collapse
