We were very impressed with the service on check in and again at breakfast (Sue Putt). Nothing was too much trouble for Sue. Our room was not quite ready for us on arrival but she quickly took our bags and settled us in the bar area with a drink. (Better service than we've had at the Park Lane Hilton under similar circumstances!). Our room was clean and provided all we needed. The bathroom was nicely decorated with a separate shower. We requested a room at the back of the hotel and had a quiet nights sleep. The front is probably noisy from traffic. Breakfast was good for a budget hotel and food was hot and replenished. All in all good value with professional, friendly service from Sue who was really the only staff we dealt with as she seemed to have several pairs of hands! Collapse

We booked in advance to stay here for my cousin's 40th birthday party at the nearby Race Course. I managed to tick the wrong box on my booking so had to phone to correct that, and then a week later to give a new credit card as my husband's had been lost and so cancelled. Both times helpful friendly service dealing with a disorganised punter. Then yesterday I called before we arrived to check about taxis to the venue and spoke to a very helpful friendly Debbie. . When we arrived she and Sue were most welcoming and we went to our very comfortable room. Waving goodnight to both ladies when we returned from our party at 11.00pm , both Sue and Debby were on duty again first thing is morning managing check outs and a busy breakfast sitting. Long hours worked but no drop at all in the lovely friendly service. We would definitely stay here again. Collapse

In the relatively out-of-the way town of Braintree is where you'll find this HI Express. Entry is through a series of quick turns between two round-abouts. Don't be surprised if you make a couple loops before making it into the parking area. The staff are friendly and efficient. Joking around during check-in came easy and made for a very pleasant welcome! The hotel is starting to show some signs of well-use and it may be time for an update, but otherwise clean and functionally maintained. Rooms are typical size for an HI Express. All the usual amenities (hair dryer, tv, hot water kettle, standing shower...). Water pressure is good and there's plenty of hot water to get you going in the morning or for relaxing after a long day. Breakfast is limited compared to other locations in Europe. It typically consisted of citrus fruit, yogurt, sliced cheese, variety of breads, scrambles eggs, baked beans, sausages, mushrooms, coffees and juices. It's better than what many HI Express in the US have, but when compared to other U.K. Hotels it is minimal. There are a couple negatives. One is that there are no power outlets near the bed. Many travelers have medical equipment or electronics that need to charge overnight. I asked about an extension cord and the staff quickly located one for my use during my stay. Again the staff to the rescue! But, to management, there's electrical items in the headboard (lights, clock, phone) it would really be a simple matter to plumb in a power outlet at each side of the bed. The other thing (that has actually caused me to rethink my next stay at this location) is the bed. It's an inner-spring mattress on a hard-board surface. Relatively thin with no padding, the springs can be felt through the surface of the mattress. Not really conducive to sleeping off a bit of jet lag. For a one night stay, this property is located well, with a great staff, and reasonable price. For anything longer than a day or two... maybe something else would be better. With better beds and power near the bed, the staff could make this my go-to stay in the area. Without a bed upgrade, I'm afraid I'm going to have to make a different arrangement next time or my back and sides won't handle it well. Collapse
A bit disappointed

Clean and the bed was comfortable, good shower, good size room BUT aircon not working for the first night and the next morning we were there, electric blow heater in the room which did not heat the bathroom. Breakfast was awful, dried scrambled egg, warmed up sausages and backed beans which were cold. Dried up rolls and croissants. Coffee from machine was cold. Road nearby very noisy. Friendly staff at the reception desk. Collapse
