Just an overnight stop on a journey south, but my wife and I very much enjoyed our stay. With a 5 hour drive to get there and not arriving until early evening, we opted for a dinner, bed and breakfast package. From a warm welcome, nicely furnished and clean room, a leisurely swim in the pool to a very nice dinner and breakfast, it was all very efficient, of a very good standard and a very reasonable price. Although there was a Christmas Party night that evening, we were not disturbed with any noise issues. Highly recommended. Collapse

Well where do I start First thing I noticed was somebody working the bar who had been sacked from wetherspoons for stealing so not a good impression Choice of drinks was poor and the only tonic water was Schweppes so skipped the gin. The meal was supposed to be at 8pm. At 8:30 I got a bread roll then 15 minutes later what was supposed to be vegetable soup which tasted more like spicy tomato. After 9pm I got my main which as Im a pescatarian the only option was vegetable Wellington.... There was no vege in the pastry it was soggy pastry and tomato sauce. I complained and to be fair the very nice lady got me and my friend a cheese board and prosecco but I was hungry this was supposed to be my evening meal!! The dj was rubbish most of the party poppers were broken. Really a refund should of been offered as I didn't even risk the pudding and left early very very disappointed. Collapse

Stayed here for one night arriving 6 December 2017. Have stayed before. Generally OK, but only scoring 3/5 due to noise issues. We had room 101 which is above hotel entrance. Double glazing failed to keep out general traffic noise, and the noise of the road works which appear to have been going on for ever. Also noise from corridor as we were situated at entrance to our corridor. This included fellow guests talking very loudly in corridor at about 5:30 AM and then the trundling of suitcases. Not hotels fault, but more and more people appear not to care anymore about consideration for other guests. Collapse

The second of two different IHG brand hotels for me this week found me staying in the HI at the A1/A66 junction near Darlington for two nights My arrival was a little complicated due to the roadworks (thousands of cones and closed lanes, plus lots of diversion signs) on the roundabout where the hotel is located. My first attempt was a turn too soon, and on finding my way back my second attempt overshot the entrance. Third time was thankfully lucky, and subsequent returns not an issue once you have worked out where to go. It was dark and snowing when I had problems at first, but a sign on the "none-too-obvious" gap between the cones into the hotel car park may be worth considering if these roadworks will be ongoing for some time please. I was able to find a convenient parking space almost directly outside the main hotel entrance, whilst several nearby parking spaces were fenced off as around half a dozen or more Tesla charging units were being installed in the hotel car park. At reception I was welcomed and given my room cards (an extra one for the power controller slot on entry - a full size Tesco Club card or Nectar card works just as well) along with a voucher that gave me free WiFi, free “go large” on drinks (at the bar and with a meal), no “tray charge” on room service, and some other member benefits I don’t fully recall now. My room was at the back of the hotel looking out onto the car park, and was “mostly quiet” throughout my entire stay. There was a small flight of stairs from reception to my room, and no lift option available. The reception staff did ask if this was OK on arrival, and it was not an issue for me personally. I’m glad I was in this location towards the rear of the hotel, but more on this shortly. I ate both nights at the hotel bar/lounge, as the weather outside was very cold and we had blowing snow on the second night. There was also a pizza restaurant available at the hotel, but I preferred the varied bar menu options on offer. A single course meal with a pint of soft drink (free member upgrade here remember) was between £20 and £25, so not bad value for a hotel. My food order was taken at my table in the lounge area, and was delivered hot (with my “no this, add that” request met in full) in good time both nights. Breakfast was an extra cost for me, but there was an excellent range of options available. Unlike my earlier HI Express stay at the beginning of the week I was able to request soft poached eggs each day. These were delivered in short order and were cooked as requested with lovely soft yokes. There was also a good range of other hot and cold items available, plus plentiful hot drinks. All of the serving staff, both morning and evening, were friendly, polite and really helpful. The free (as an IHG loyalty program member) WiFi provided good Internet access and I was able to stream Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube content without any problems during my stay. The TV also offered a recording option which was new to me, and I was able to record and replay terrestrial TV programs that I would have otherwise missed as they were broadcast whilst I was eating dinner – a nice and most useful new feature! Sadly I didn’t get the chance to try out the leisure club facilities (pool, gym etc) on site, the cost for these being included in the normal room rate. They are in a separate building across the hotel car park and from the reports of other guests at breakfast sounded quite good. Hopefully on a return visit I’ll get a chance to experience these facilities for myself, and if I do I’ll be sure to report back here on Trip Advisor. My room did have a few minor issues during my stay: The bath ran very slowly, even though the shower had plenty of water pressure. I managed to watch nearly all of the news (~25 mins) before the bath had filled to an acceptable level for a (not so) quick soak before dinner. On the second night I had no heating in my room, but a quick call to reception had a fan heater provided that kept things warm from then on. A noisy bathroom fan was a little annoying in my room (fixed by using the isolator switch on the wall outside the bathroom, or taking a bath in the dark), but more so was the similarly noisy fan in the room next door when the occupant used their bathroom in the early hours both nights. I’m also glad I was at the back of the hotel, as on the second night of my stay there was a function (posh frocks and dinner jackets in abundance) and I could just hear the music from my room with the TV off when I went to bed just before midnight. Several other guests, staying in the main part of the hotel I spoke with at breakfast the following morning, noted how much louder this was in their rooms nearer to the front of the hotel. I’m told that things “eventually wound down” at around 1am – not something I was awake to witness thankfully in my room towards the rear of the hotel. All of these issues from my perspective were minor, but in combination were sufficient to cost that Trip Advisor 5th star I’m afraid, hence only awarding 4 stars for this visit. Collapse
