Staff at hotel were both polite and very efficient in all areas except for understanding or dealing with ihg card members. Having a platinum intercontinental was offered points or drink eventually at check apart from which the card meant nothing to the hotel. Compared with other ihg hotels i have stayed in this year was the worst for acknowledging my card status. Would i stay at the hotel again yes i would as well as recommending it to others. Please though recognise loyalty in future to the ihg brand. Collapse

I was not expecting a great deal from my stay at the Holiday Inn Cardiff North, as I understand it is a hotel of convenience for wedding guests, conferences and so on, but I was disappointed by the service that my group received. When we checked into our room late in the evening, I found that the toilet in our room had not been cleaned. I called reception and they offered for us to move rooms, but we had already unpacked everything so asked if they could please clean the toilet. They responded that it would have to wait until morning, but I pressed them that was unacceptable given clear issues of hygiene. A member staff did come up a few minutes later, which we appreciated. However, after the staff member had left I then noticed that the bath was also unclean. This was disconcerting and made us wonder to what level the room had been cleaned at all. The sheets on the bed were very uncomfortable and scratchy. Again, this would not have bothered us a great deal except for the fact that we had to pay over £100/ night to stay in the hotel. It seems as if the Holiday Inn are taking advantage of their brand and convenient location in order to overcharge visitors without providing an adequate level of comfort and cleanliness. The cooked breakfast, priced at £15, was frankly inedible. I understand that individual staff are not to blame for all of these issues but one has to wonder whether there needs to be greater attention to detail, rather than simply relying upon the reputation of the chain and neglecting basic services. Fine for the basics, but that's all you'll get.

The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Cardiff, so know that if you need to get anywhere you'll need a car. There isn't anything you can walk to, unfortunately, but the front desk can help arrange for a taxi. My room was on the ground floor, actually 1 floor below the reception. while it got plenty of light, it felt very basic. The bed was comfortable, bathroom newly renovated (hot, strong shower), and the AC worked well (quiet, too). I slept well, but what I didn't like were the following: -No in-room safe. You can leave valuables with the front desk if you like, but I didn't feel particularly safe leaving my valuables with anyone. -No in-room fridge. Nowhere to store cold drinks. -wifi was free but spotty, not very fast. Not good for streaming. -The TV gets local channels only - no sky sports. I tried the gym but it was very simple - a small room with a treadmill, eliptical, bench and some hand weights. The mats were all torn up and dirty, and the place didn't seem like it had been cleaned in ages. Definitely one of the worst hotel gyms I've seen. Breakfast in the morning was nice - full spread, good coffee, nice service. All in all the staff were very kind and attentive. All in all, if you have a car and are looking for a cheap hotel with clean but basic rooms, this will do. But don't arrive hoping for anything more than basic. Collapse

Great location to stop off from London when heading deeper into Wales, so easy off the motorway (although the massive roundabout/junction it's at is a bit challenging). Got a lovely friendly welcome at reception, plenty of parking and clean and tidy room. Nothing special, it's a holiday inn after all, but simply fit the bill and was a lovely experience for the price I paid (£70.). Only booked night before on great app on phone. Breakfast was excellent as well. Wifi was ok but not impressive. Collapse
