I arrived at 12.30 for a meeting to an unmanned reception desk. Three separate members of staff walked straight passed me. When I had found someone and taken my seat I then went to the bar to get a coffee. I waited 20 minutes while one member of staff ran in and out delivering previous orders without acknowledging the three long queue waiting patiently. Two uniformed members of staff stood nearby chatting. There were voices in the kitchen. Reception was again unmanned and we waited. Eventually we were greeted with a gruff "who was first". When it came to my turn I asked for my coffee and enquiries about the muffins. The server took them out of the glass case, read what it said on them and put them back. I asked for one. Paid for it and my coffee and then the server disappeared for another five minutes. She came back and put the coffee in front of me and then disappeared again. I took the muffin myself, there didn't appear to be plates available so I went and sat down. On top of that there was so little coffee in the mug that it just tasted of milk. If the rest of the hotel is run this way I wouldn't stay there! Collapse

We needed a very brief overnight stay - arrived at this HI at 1a.m and had to leave by 8a.m. Check-in was quick and the room fine and quiet, despite being near the car park. Showers, bed etc all good. The room rate was very good - £76 via Booking.com when the rack rate was £100-£170. They made it all back at breakfast at £17.50 per head. I had the full English which was fine; my wife had some yoghurt and cereal. Cheap room, rip-off breakfast. Collapse

Don't expect luxury from this Hotel. It's low ceilings in the room are claustrophobic, most rooms are ground floor with views of the car park. Noises from other rooms can be heard, doors closing, plumbing sounds, footsteps etc. My first impression when walking into this Hotel was the smell that reminded me of the inside of a musty old caravan. It's decor will probably one day come back into fashion. However that said I was warmly greeted by reception. The size of my room disappointing, but it was clean and had all the accessories I needed. Coffees, teas, ironing board, and wifi. The wifi is nanny locked so if you have any NSFW sites you want to view, you won't. Breakfasts are fine, not a wide variety for those whom breakfast is more than a fry-up. Altogether however my Hotel room was tidied and refreshed nicely every day of my stay. This is a no frills Hotel, nothing fancy but if you have business in the area then it will do the job. You pay for what you get. And it works fine. Collapse

Reception is quite ok, bar and personnel there are fine as well. My room was noisy, time ago someone pulled out a refrigerator, but space there is still empty... Light lit under the door all the night...and spider on picture in the morning. Breakfast, the worst. Food itself was qiute ok, but two ladies - waitress shouted over room discussing how they move tables for afternoon. I asked for coffee, she brought it but while pouring coffee into cup she spilled it on a chair. This can happen, but she did not recognized this and moved out. Later she did the same to other guest and spilled coffee on floor, again with no interest. If she doesnot like her job, she can do some other job. Collapse

From the moment the hotel had received our initial deposit, it seemed all was going smoothly, the correspondence between myself and the hotel Events Co Coordinator was timely and consistent, and it needed to be as we live 300 miles away in Cumbria, so it was made clear from the start to the hotel teams that phone calls and email are pivotal in coordinating the wedding Event. However, this all seemed to change as the weeks and months went on. From initially being told we had the use of the Eton Suites from the afternoon through to the evening the day before our wedding to decorate, this then changed and we were subsequently told at a face to face meeting at the hotel with the event coordinator that another function was taking place in the booked rooms during the day and evening and that this meant we would not be able to get in at the times originally agreed to set up. We were now being told that we couldn’t have access to the Eton suites until after the function had finished at around 10pm and could we come down at 7am the morning of our wedding to set up the wedding breakfast rooms! Two days before our wedding we had a final meeting at the hotel with the event coordinator, who then told us the lady who was going to be looking after us on the day was off sick and introduced two other members of staff, one being the General Manager of the hotel and the other was Diana, the Food and Beverage Manager. All three members of staff advised us that, this was so that there were no issues with focus and our day would run smoothly. We were also told that the DJ would be in contact with us that evening to go over any music that we wanted and most importantly our ‘First Dance’ song. It’s a little unsettling being told these things with just two days to go!! The DJ did contact us and asked us to come up with 10 songs. I wish we had been told this three weeks ago and not with two days to go! After yet more discussion with the three hotel staff members (One being General manager) about the final arrangements for the day, I told them I wasn’t happy to get up early on the morning of my wedding and set up, and that I needed to be in the suites we had booked the night before… It’s a BIG deal making sure the tables are set and everything is in order and perfect, and I don’t want to find myself on the actual day looking at tables and finding they aren’t just how I want them, so it is imperative that the set up is done the day before (or in this case, the night before!) so I have time to adjust and make good any imperfections that might have occurred. We were also told that there would be a storage room for us to store our wedding table arrangements and wedding décor bits, which would come in quite handy for the ease of moving bits from there to the Eton Suites. The day before the wedding we arrive at the hotel for check in at 2pm and we speak to the girl on the reception desk and tell her we are here for our wedding and can we have a trolley to move all our luggage and wedding things to the store room and our room. She informs us we can use a trolley but there is no store room, so we would have to wheel our things down the corridor and then carry them up a flight of stairs to our room…This then meant we would have to carry these heavy items back down at our allotted time to set up the room. We were also told we could have the adjoining room to our bridal suite for a reduced rate on the Thursday night, to enable the groom to have somewhere to get ready with late check out on the day of the wedding. However, we had an issue with the receptionist having not been told this and would have to check, so we didn’t get the key card for this room as pre arranged with our event coordinator. We booked an evening meal in the hotel restaurant for ourselves and four guests as a pre wedding meal on the Thursday evening and the restaurant only had three other diners in that evening (so not busy at all). This however became problematic for the staff in the restaurant, in that they were rushing away from our table, before fully finishing taking our orders then having to come back and take them again and this then meant that three of the meals come out to our table not as requested. Fundamentally a big thing if you have stated that you don’t want certain things on your plate, as it could be for allergy reasons! One of our little guests had stated no sauce on his burger, and it came out with sauce on it! This meant all he could eat was his burger and left the bun, now £14.75 is a lot of money for just a plain meat burger!! We complained to a member of staff who stated that there was a service charge of 10% already added to the bill (Be weary and mindful of this, if thinking of giving a tip at the end of the meal) and she would remove the service charge and our drinks from the bill, for the mistakes they made. At this point we were also told that the Eton Suite rooms for our wedding would be available to us to set up at 11pm Thursday night… and, they will call us when ready. However, it was now 11.20pm and we decided to carry the bits n bobs down the stairs to the trolley and after several trips up and down we made our way to the Suites. Having arrived at the Eton Suites, we were confronted by a room not ready and no tables with cloths had been set up. They were frantically rushing around trying to clear away the previous function’s chairs & tables and still hoovering! (We have photos of this.) By now we were trying to set up our wedding Breakfast tables around staff laying out plates, glasses and cutlery etc. We finally finished setting up at 1.30am and headed wearily, tired & stressed back up to our room. The morning of our wedding has arrived and we head down for breakfast and we would expect this to be straightforward and simple! As a Bride & Groom you would expect some kind of acknowledgement that you were special guests and treated a little differently to the corporate or other guests, as you’ve paid a lot of money for your wedding Breakfast and Buffet Reception to be held here. Sadly not, on having seated ourselves we were asked if we’d like tea/coffee and chose the latter. We went and got our hot buffet breakfast and sat down to enjoy our wedding morning breakfast together…Wait! Where’s the coffee? After having waited for 20 minutes and no one around, we then saw a waitress walk across the breakfast room to the other side in the corner of the room and serve a lone gentleman (Who had arrived some ten minutes after us) a cup of coffee! She then proceeded to walk on past us until my htb called to her, could we have some coffee please! I wish he hadn’t of bothered, as I can only describe it as luke warm dishwater! We headed back to our room and the htb rang down to reception to speak with our Event coordinator, and explain our misdemeanours the night before and that morning! The Events Coordinator came up to our room and apologised for the mishaps and she then assured that things would go smoothly from here on in. It had been mostly stress free for us (apart from the dealings with the hotel through email or face to face meetings) leading up to our day and then the stress progressed from the day before arriving at the hotel! The next saga was upon us just having ordered room service for lunch and settling down to eat this in my towel having just showered, I received a call from my cake lady saying she had spoken to a hotel member of staff and requested that she needed to be shown the wedding breakfast room the cake was to be delivered too. The member of staff she spoke with refused to allow her access and said they didn’t have a key to let her in and they would take the cake and place it in the Cambridge storage room. We later found out that this was in fact the storage room we had initially been told and stated in our contract that we had the use of, but was never able to have access too. I now had to hurriedly get dressed and leave my half eaten lunch to go downstairs and sort out the issue of the cake arriving. When I got to the lobby area I spoke with my trusted cake lady (Who is an old school friend) and she explained about not being allowed to deliver the cake to it’s setting, as previously arranged and agreed with the Event coordinator. The hotel staff member who obstructed this had now seen me and rushed over to announce that the cake could go in the wedding breakfast room and she would let us in. Well! The staff member had started to retract all that she had first said to my cake lady and make it look like she was in fact making it up and lying! Totally unacceptable! The Events coordinator had then come rushing out from her back room, and fussed around us…I said to her ‘I thought you said things would run smoothly now’ and she answered with a scowl on her face ‘Sorry’! So I repeated myself twice more and she didn’t answer me. Well I had contained my upset so well up till now, and I was deflated and close to tears and told the event coordinator I’m very close to walking out of their hotel and going 300 miles back home as it’s been a horrible experience! On returning to our room, I told my htb what had just happened and broke down inconsolably. I was now tired, frustrated, deflated and unenthused and my wedding morning had turned into a horrible nightmare of a mess! There were many, many other small mishaps throughout our stay, just too many to mention that could so easily have been avoided if the right training and attention had been given to the hotel staff and us, the wedding couple. We did found ourselves micro managing the hotel staff and telling them what to do, which quite frankly shouldn’t be happening when you pay for a package in order for your wedding to be managed for you and designed to remove the stress We had numerous offers of complimentary drinks and our lunch was taken of the room, the terrible meal from the night before was refunded and the hotel had made other small offers to try and compensate our terrible time….. But can you put a price on what should’ve been our best day ever! Collapse
