Just returned from an amazing week at this hotel in Playa San Juan. We didn't read the reviews before we booked - thank goodness !! I have to wonder if these people stayed at the same hotel ! Staff were very helpful, the hotel was clean (and I'm quite fussy), great bar area. We didn't eat in the restaurant as we preferred to eat along the sea front. The hotel is within easy walking distance of bars, shops, restaurants, the tram and of course the beach - what more could you want ? We had lovely days out on the tram to Benidorm, Alicante and LA Vila for next to nothing. Stayed in room 511 - top floor. Big room and very quiet (email ahead) The weather was fantastic which helped but we can't wait to return. Collapse

Just returned from a 3 night stay (15-18 April) at Holiday Inn Alicante with my husband. Firstly, please don't let bad reviews put you off- if you're looking for a luxury 4* hotel, this is not the hotel for you. However, if you're looking for a fairly inexpensive hotel close to the beach to use as a base to explore the beautiful region of Alicante, then this might be the place for you. Positives: friendly English speaking staff, nice pool area, fairly cheap food and drink prices, free parking, 10 minute walk from a stunning beach, good transport links (number 21 bus to Alicante town right outside hotel and tram is a 5 min walk), early check in (we were allowed to check in at 1pm although official check in is 4pm), late check out at 12pm (and also option to extend check out til 4pm for €15 and 8pm for €25). Negatives: outdated decor and TV, no tea/coffee facilities in room, slow internet, a few noisy neighbours, not much to keep kids entertained at hotel itself. Playa de San Juan itself is lovely- beautiful stretch of beach with a long string of restaurants/cafes on seafront. Lots of play areas for kids on beach and public toilets too (white beach huts). There is the usual McDonald's, Burger King etc and some lovely Spanish cafes. Definitely had a local feel to it-not overly touristy. Would recommend El Lloc cafe and Restaurant Azul Playa on the seafront. Hotel is a 15 minute drive into Alicante Town and around 25 minutes from the airport. Collapse

Holiday Inn should meet certain standards. This hotel does not. While it is well situated and staff is - for European standards - friendly and the meals reasonably good, the hotel is totally run down and needs urgently some refurbishing. Rost in the bathroom, curtains and carpets with holes, no fonctioning wi fi (internet), old furniture, not very well equipped etc.etc. When your only interest is to have a hotel close to the beach: OK. If you want a hotel which is worth this name: stay away... Collapse

Just back from a 5 night stay here. The positives: The staff are very friendly and very accommodating (I had booked a double bed and we got 2 singles, on asking for a double bed next morning we did get moved to a different room with a king bed no problem). It has a large car park inside the grounds which is very secure.. The free wifi is good and stable all through the hotel. The public areas are very nice, The restaurant is nice with well made good food... the pool area is nice enough, but seems pool not heated, so although it was very warm each day the pool never got "warm" enough to use. The hotel is 10 mins walk from the beach. The carpets on the wings were very worn and needing replaced..The rooms are VERY dated, both rooms we had had peeling wallpaper, the TV in one was an old tube TV, the other was an LCD but the size of a laptop screen,(All channels in Spanish except for BBC world and a German news station) In the first room there was an issue with the toilet door locking itself, i could not get out after 10 mins stuck my wife woke with the noise of me trying to open the door.. with her trying the outside the door did open, but, unfortunately it again closed and we (both outside) could not get it open at all....luckily an enterprising housekeeper with a teaspoon DID manage to open it!! surprisingly there was no fridge whatsoever and no tea/coffee making facilities in room.. The blackout curtains are great but are riddled with holes, the 2nd room had a sofa bed which has really seen better days, it was stained and looked awful and finally the rooms were very strongly smelling of smoke. Bathroom was fine. Only occasion of poor service was on one occasion whilst waiting to be served the bartender had his back to the bar on his phone and never checked for customers (it was not busy which may explain that) Price wise for average £40 pn it is decent value, but did feel the restaurant prices a wee bit steep... Breakfast at 10 euro each is a bit much, and 2.50 for a glass of coke (small bottle less than size of a can) is quite expensive (Same at a local pub...80 cents) that said the 3 course dinner for 15 Euro each is pretty decent. Overall it is a well run hotel with very good friendly staff that needs a renovation. Collapse

Kemmons Wilson founded Holiday Inn on the principle of quality and consistency. The Holiday Inn Alicante is the antithesis of everything that he and Holiday Inn have stood for. It is a filthy old hotel, with stained walls, dirty carpets, tatty floors and broken beds. I personally could not stay in the first room I was checked in to and would have rather driven home. Fortunately, when I complained to the reception, they moved me to a more passable room. Their excuse, that the hotel was old, means nothing. I have stayed in hotels that are hundreds of years old that are luxurious. Really, just paint the walls and clean the carpets for goodness sake! On the plus side, the staff were friendly and helpful, the wifi was good and there was a safe. Collapse
