Awful stay - Spa turned into a swimming lesson for toddlers and young children!

We traveled all the way from Essex for a 2 night getaway at The Hogs Back Hotel and we were absolutely gobsmacked at how poor the service and quality of the hotel was. The majority of pictures (excluding the spa) are not as advertised on their website, it is extremely dated and to be honest looks like it is going out of business. There was a shortage of staff, who many of which were not very helpful when we had concerns. We were really looking forward to using the spa pool and relaxing, this was at around 6/7pm we decided to go down. Much to my dismay that the changing room was absolutely packed with mums and children aged 2-6 years old. I walked down into the swimming pool area to my dismay, extremely loud, swimming classes were taking place in the small pool leaving nowhere for any guests. I'm sorry but that does not sound like a relaxing spa back to me. We went straight to reception to ask what was going on, kindly the man offered us an upgraded room however neither my partner and I saw this as an upgrade as it was absolutely ages away from everything and was smack bang by the road so it was extremely noisy (When I say road, it is literally on the M3 next to a service station). We declined the offer and asked to speak with the manager in the morning and went down to the restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was extremely dated and the food was overpriced and unedible. My partner had to send his burger back due to it being rock solid and service was awful. When speaking with the manager the next day he did not seem surprised by our complaints and offered me a refund. However a few weeks on and around 4 phone calls later, I am yet to hear anything. This is not a relaxing stay, we had a 2-night stay booked and left first thing in the morning - would definitely recommend staying somewhere else. Collapse

Stayed one night on business trip with husband. Room was nice but I'd requested a quiet room on my booking but had a room at the front so dreadfully noisy. Room was comfortable but little touches like decent loo roll nd towel rail in shower room would improve it. Room only had shower and water was only warm not hot and couldn't increase it. Food was expensive and poor. Had Prawn cocktail salad which had the merest scraping of a sauce, no seasoning and zero or an flavour from the obviously frozen prawns which had dry white tips. Very disappointing. Single Fish cake was over fried and overpriced. Steak was nice but my rare steak was overcooked. The chips however were crispy and nice. The sides were also massively overpriced for a tiny bowl of veg and salad. The house Merlot was also very vinegary. Overall I was dissapointed. No one on reception when I was leaving. Collapse

The spa is the same, ran out of padlocks for lockers, pool area is grim, sauna not worki g properly.......etc! Food in the restaurant is awful, my shoes we're more tender than the burgers, restaurant and bar have no atmosphere, bright lighting, no ambient music.....just awful. Rooms are big and comfy, just dated orange, beige and brown decor. Staff we're fairly decent, they can only work with the tools they have after all. Would not recommend, even on a voucher deal. Arrived at 1pm for a spa treatment which was lush, ladies were lovely and it was bliss. Had to wait until gone 3pm for our keys to the room however it was worth the wait, one of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in. The Room At The Top is lush. Girl on the bar was so lovely, name escapes me but she recommended a lunch as I'm very indecisive and she chose good - inhaled lunch and a cheeky prosecco. Unfortunately everything went downhill after that... The rest of the hotel decor is very very dated and needs some TLC, we had a 3 course meal for dinner and can honestly say I've never had such awful food and I was hungry! It's pretty hard to get pudding wrong but somehow they managed it, and we had no ice cream or custard with our supposed trio of puds, which ended up being left as it was burnt or over-microwaved and was unpleasant. The waitress disappeared after she managed to wizz through three meals in under an hour, and then was nowhere to be seen. We ended up walking out and settling the bill an hour later with the hostess. Breakfast was mediocre , nothing to write home about. Would come back as a day outing for a spa and a drink in the bar but the poor food outweighs the stunning room unfortunately. Collapse

Just had a one night stay here, never again. Unwelcoming, queued for 35 minutes to check in and out. £4.00 for a bottle of water in the room! Toilet rolls and tissues on ration. Pool was full so had to wait two hours before being allowed in, very small and only 30 allowed in. Sauna broken, no seal around door, steam room broken also. Small pool and packed with screaming kids. Breakfast awful, and no eggs, you have to catch a passing waitress to ask for an egg, but you don't know when you will get it. Small bar - no atmosphere. Ordered wine at £17 a bottle - but then told they had ran out of ice buckets to keep the wine cool! Only received half of my evening meal - I complained, chef sent his apologies with missing food on another plate. An oldy England Hotel stuck in another world, dull and unremarkable, I would avoid it, poorly managed, the blind led by the blind. Bacon and mushrooms are awful - yuk, lacks freshness, cost cutting and cheap, find somewhere better. However, the room was clean - well aint that something. Wont be returning and will soon forget it.Also, we were on lower ground floor, down in the dungeon so don't expect a view.Oh and corridores stink of food. The two guys on reception who also do the bar unfriendly and can't be bothered attitude. Very limited facilities and not modern. Orange juice at breakfast is warm and strange. Collapse
