As I have never stayed at any Hilton hotel before I looked at reviews before hand so was aware this is more of a budget hotel than a luxury one. The car park is small but we did get a place £6 for 24 hours. I paid for a deluxe room with canal view which I would not do again. Our room was roomy and pleasant with a neutral decor. the room was quiet with a new bed for a good night sleep. The bathroom are well overdue a facelift and we had to ask twice at reception for towels which I thought would be in the bathroom for our arrival. The lighting was strange with the switch turns all lights on or off, so you can't have just the bedside lamp on. We would of liked a biscuit in our room as the restaurant was dreadful. There was 11 People in the restaurant with a very limited menu but it still took over an hour to make two part baked baguette with a fatty minute steak. Collapse

Good quality hotel, Hilton standards, slightly on the edge of the city (up hill walk 15mins to town hall), good road connections if you don't need to walk into city centre. Staff are really good, friendly without being over familiar.

Restaurant staff were useless Wouldn't let me in to the empty restaurant as they had a coach party Wouldn't give me a large wine glass as they only had 1 left Did not do a peppercorn sauce ( which they hav done previously - seriously how difficult is it to knock up a peppercorn sauce) food arrived asked for a English mustard told " we don't have any" then to cap it all of my medium steak was "well done" and gristly - £50 dinner wasn't work £5 So bad I didn't even go down for breakfast ! I like Hilton and selected the hotel specially but was disappointed overall. Added a night to our reservation so wanted the same room from the first nigh. Got confirmation of this from Hilton reservations when I added (and paid) for the additional night. Got there to be informed this wasn't in fact possible. Ultimately resolved but took time, not great after confirmation already received and after a 6 hour late night drive! Staff did their best to resolve but not really listening to what I was saying - advised I would have been better phoning the (Hilton!) hotel directly rather than (Hilton!) central reservations. Also was overcharged on check out which was resolved but again took ages. Our key also stopped working whilst thee so had to have 3 trips to the room and back to reception before maintenance called in to fix. Staff helpful enough however, just a bit of a pattern. Also no mention made at booking of the parking charge - £6 per night which can mount up... Very poor value for money I think too. Hilton a good brand but increasingly generic corporate and not high end corporate either in terms of service and standards overall and therefore now pretty much consistently overpriced for what is being offered e.g. £13 for a glass of wine and a coke. Cleaning half hearted e.g. a dirty glad not removed or cleaned 2 days in a row, nothing really tidied to any extent e.g. kettle etc put away although towels replaced and cleaning happened. Breakfast choice limited. Spa in need of some TLC and overly busy at weekends including swimming lessons in an already small pool so further restricted. Overall just not that great which is a shame as I was really looking forward to ir and chose specifically to stay at a Hilton rather than whee the rest of our group we staying. Ironic really as they had a much better overall experience, customer service and value for money at the Holiday Inn Express unexpectedly. Wi fi only comply, mentally for Hilton Honours members which I am, and not that quick either unless you still pay a premium. Customer service pretty patchy and slow and also inconsistent - some pretty grumpy ones there who clearly feel overworked and underpaid..... Overall very disappointed and won't be hurrying back.... We had a lovely weekend here. The room was spotless the staff very friendly and helpful. A few minor points there was no milk or tea bags in our room when we arrived but a call to reception sorted that out. On Saturday we left our towels to be cleaned and they were taken but we were not left new dry ones. A quick word with a cleaning lady and I was given clean towels. The pool and jacuzzi were lovely. Breakfast was delicious buffet style and plentiful with loads of choice but it wasn't till day 2 I realised I could ask for poached eggs and mushrooms to go with my breakfast. The breakfast area was also very small for such a large hotel but it did serve till 11am so that was good as it was not rushed. Easy access to the city centre we had a lovely weekend Collapse
