First Solo Holiday in Iceland

It was my first travelling outside of London and I was also going by myself, I can honestly say that it's the best experience I could ever imagine, literally met my expectation and beyond. As soon as I landed the people were cool and helpful. It was for my birthday, and I decided to travel alone. I figured I was getting to the age where I felt like it's important to enjoy my own company once in a while. I had the opportunity to converse with the people in Iceland which I feel like I wouldn't have had the chance to if I was with my friends. I learnt about the culture and what Iceland was about, it was fun and educational. Everything was great, from the staff, to the people, service, food, and tour guides but there's only one thing I can fault; the country is expensive, you have to come prepared. I was there for 3 days, I spent all my Kronas that was equivalent to £200 in the UK, it was on food and cabs. Also I didn't get to see the Northern Lights, they're so rare, I've been told if you want to see them the best place to catch them is in Norway. But I loved the fact that the coach driver and tour guide were so adamant in helping us hunt for them. To summaries, great exp. I loved the Blue Lagoon, the best part of my holiday :) Thank you, SuperBreak and everyone who helped me have a great exp. and memory. Collapse

Comfortable and clean but in desperate need of renovation, especially in the bathrooms. No air conditioning which is great for a lot of the year but it was hot in the room when we were there and were provided with a fan. The curtains are inadequate for keeping out the light when it's daylight for a great part of the night, definitely need block out window coverings. The hotel has quite nice views if you are front facing, but is quite a way from the town centre so you will need to take a cab which is quite pricey. But everything in Iceland is expensive! The breakfast is very good with many choices to suit everybody. Collapse
Poor experience, warning to Hilton Gold members, Management makes excuses!!

The worst Hilton I have ever stayed in and the worst condescending front desk Manager I have encountered. I am Hilton Gold member plus I used my AMEX Platinum card to book the room, as such, certain benefits such as room upgraded, better room quality etc are automatically offered to me on preferential basis at Hilton properties all over the world that I have traveled. But, this review isn't about not getting an upgrade. This review is about not even getting what I paid for properly and being given low class treatment by the Manager lady. I arrived at 6:30 am to hotel due to early flight, not expecting to check in early but to leave my bags and go out sightseeing. Couple travel, and was our anniversary trip so I booked the hotel with a request for high floor, with preferably facing the water view. When I arrived early, the first thing I did is ask the front desk gentleman about the type of room availability for me. He could see my status so gave me access to Executive lounge and told me there were rooms available on high floor facing the bay side so no problem for me to get a room there. So far, I was happy and they appeared to be very accommodating. Please note: I wasn't looking for an upgrade, just a higher floor. This gentleman said he would take care of my check-in and promised to take our bags to our rooms but it would be 2 hours or so since housekeeping hasn't even started cleaning that early. I said 'no problem', I appreciated his offering to take care of us, and then we left for sightseeing. When we arrived at 4pm, bags were still on ground floor and we were not checked in (FYI, the person had taken my credit card, passport copy, filled out a form etc all at 6:30am so technically I was checked in but no rooms were taken care of as promised). I thought they had so when they gave me my keys, I was surprised to see a 2nd floor room. I asked about high floor, the gentleman looked at the system for availability and said yes, there are rooms but he need Manager's approval. He called a lady Manager who came out and without looking at the system or anything, in condescending behavior said nothing is available and only the room I got is available. I was visibly upset and explained the morning conversation to which she said "sorry everyone you talked to was misinformed. I will let them know". She repeated the same sentence no matter what i said. We went to the room and it was facing taxi park and bus station with lot of noise. This is the concern i had in the first place and why I wanted a higher floor so we called by phone to complain of this, at which point the lady manager offered a room on 5th floor but said its a smaller room. I was surprised because downstairs, she was adamant that there was no other room than the 2nd floor room. Now there is a small 5th floor room. I went to see this room which was very small but quiet and away from taxi/bus area, so we took it but regretted this room the entire time due to practically no room to walk around our luggage. When sitting in the lobby, I heard an older "white" gentleman come down to complain about his room size. They changed him to another room. Yet, I was always being told there are no choices but the crappy rooms available. Manager keeps making excuses that "they didn't have availability"...but this isn't about availability. I have been to hotels where they told me what was/wasn't available upfront. This is a situation when their front desk people told me rooms were available, but failed to put me in the right room and NO EFFORTS were made by Manager despite have status with Hilton and Platinum AMEX benefits, to find me a decent room for my stay. But they had not problem collecting full room rate. Horrible experience for our anniversary. I cannot even recommend this hotel for its amenities as it is a very basic hotel...equivalent to a 2-star/3-star maximum in USA, and even in US, a 3-star room is a large room. Please see pictures of the room I got for booking a Superior King bed room!!! To top it off, the safe deposit box didn't work. Bathroom room light had only 1 bulb, the other was fused. Our food tray wasn't picked up for more than a day when we left outside our door. A good manager could have: - offered us a better room the 2nd day of our 3 night stay, but instead we stayed 3 nights in this room - ensured the day we arrived at 6:30am and you took all of our information, you could have followed up and checked us into a room we paid for properly - offered us other amenities if your rooms were "really" booked out so we would enjoy our stay FYI, we paid $1,100 USD for 3 night stay (to receive this treatment and room)...not a good value at all, therefore I recommend to get a hotel for cheaper closer to the city. Regardless, Iceland is beautiful, and don't let this bad hotel spoil your vacation!! Collapse

The most expensive hotel during our stay in Iceland and perversely the poorest one. The Hilton Nordica was only picked due to its very close proximity to a vehicle rental place we were using but the hotel is very inconveniently located to see the sights of Reykjavik - its on a piece of dual-carriageway in an ugly outskirt of the city. Get your hiking boots on or pay through the nose for a taxi into the interesting bits of central Reykjavik. Our twin room was located in the corner of the 4th floor. It was nicely appointed and clean as you'd expect. However we had an issue with the sink only providing scolding hot water - this was duly reported to reception who did nothing to resolve or even apologise. Its a minor thing but the annoying use-your-room-key-to-make-the-lift-go applies in this hotel. I think its supposed to be an anti-crime thing but it inconveniences guests and crime rates in Iceland are unbelievably low, so why do it? Judging from our fellow guests the hotel depends mostly on Americans who selected the hotel based on its familiar Hilton brand not realising that Icelandic companies like Fosshotel exist. If you want a cookie-cut hotel that could be anywhere in the world then I guess the Nordica might suit some tastes but personally I regret booking. A more Icelandic hotel in a better location plus the cost of a taxi-ride to the vehicle rental place would have been less expensive anyway. Collapse

As supposedly up market tourist hotels go in Iceland I suppose this is one of the better one's, but don't expect much-pretty average-No turndown service , very very basic stuff -equivalent to a 3 star in South Africa or UK. It is clean , the staff are approachable but very regimented in their work limitation, for example the lady that clears the table can not organise an egg cup holder for a boiled egg as that is not her job, the chef cannot cook an omelette on a Sunday as she is the only chef(??? what ...did she loose her cooking skills??)...clean up is done once a day in the room...if you want a front end office reception safe for valuables rather than using the hotel room safe, then all staff have access to the front office safe and you cannot have the key( ?? huh??)....we had a king suite -rather minimalist but comfortable. One thing I can say about this hotel is that it has the best views of any hotel in Reykjavik ...simply stunning. The executive room occasionally had the odd biscuit or stale sandwich and an abundance of colddrinks and coffees and tea's-very slim picking . I have been to many executive rooms around the world and in this instance think the Hilton should remove the title executive and replace it with viewing room rather. The restaurant: The food was not bad at all, definitely not up to Michelin standards-not from a preparation nor a service standard...very very long way to go on that score. Tried breakfast at least 4 times , lunch once and dinner once -was not blown away ever with either service or delivery of preparation .Was pleasant but not good enough to be Michelin. Not sure how the Michelin folk have got the restaurant up for a recommendation-someone lost the plot here. The hotels staff are very socialistic in their approach to their functions...they do just what is required of their job spec,no more.No latitude of thought process to make a guest more comfortable.
