We have just spent 2 nights at the Hilton, in room 459 (2 adults & 2 children). The room was great, nice and spacious even with the sofa made into a bed for the children. View from the room was great, overlooked the side of the tyne bridge and straight over the road to the sage building. Bathroom was great for a family with an over bath shower and a shower cubicle, and neither lost water power when both in use. Only complaint in the room is the lack of plug sockets next to the bed, and only 2 in the whole room, which my daughter pointed out was 'unacceptable for a family room when we have 2 phones, where is her tablet supposed to charge'!! Reception was very nice, and no problem with sitting in the lobby/bar even at night when not using the bar, and view at night is fab looking onto the tyne bridge. We didn't use the restaurant at night, but did for breakfast, which was fabulous, kids loved the kiddy breakfast station, with kids special bowls, juice cups, chocolate milk, waffle maker, and the Nutella was their favourite! Great selection for grown ups to, pastries, cooked breakfast, porridge, cereals, fruit, cooked meat, toast & chef would also make anything to your liking, and special breakfast requests. Staff were all super friendly, professional and helpful. We used the pool on both days, and reception even sent us extra set of towels to the room so that we could use the towels for the pool. We did walk down and back in our swim stuff (wrapped in towels), although you can shower in the changing rooms, (you can have a robe only if in an executive room). Pool was great for kids, not too big, but not minuscule, sauna & steam fab, only complaint here would be the jacuzzi as the chlorine was super strong, it was actually unbearable when the bubbles came on. Only complaint would be having to pay for parking in hotels car park, so feel that this should be waived for anyone staying overnight, especially at £20 per 2 nights. All in all, it was an excellent stay, and I would definitely recommend and stay again if we're are visiting the north east again. Roll on September for our next Hilton hotel experience. Collapse

Stayed at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead for one night midweek on business. The hotel is large and sits atop a slight hill on the Gateshead side (southern bank) of the River Tyne. If you get a room overlooking the River Tyne, there are great views of the river and Newcastle city. The hotel is an approximate 15 min walk from Newcastle central train station, but I wouldn't advise walking with heavy bags as it's a up and down climb! The hotel delivers the usual high Hilton standards so you can expect a certain standard of accommodation. There was a very good selection at breakfast and you could have certain dishes, such as porridge, made to order. It's only a short 10 min walk into the centre of Newcastle so despite the hotel being on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, it is an easy walk into town. I would happily stay here again if in Newcastle. Collapse

We had a couple of nights in Durham (Raddison Blu) which were great and then came to Newcastle to stay at the Hilton. Parking is under the hotel.....pretty good except the levels are small and the carpark deep. We were on the 2nd level down and the lift was not working.....it got mended briefly and broke again before we left. The room was clean well decorated and adequate, but the whole feel is a bit 'behind the wave', Showers are in the bath - meaning you have to step into the bath to get a shower from a head on a flexible hose - walk in showers are definitely better. The bed was an older pattern edition with legs and a springs - the sort where one person moves in the bed and the other person knows about their every move. Not really cutting edge quality or standards. On examination the joints were opening etc - a bit old and tired. Not really what we expect in this price bracket. The A/C was very noisy the first night and we had to turn it off, but they sorted the vibrating fan for the next night. Wifi - Unstable and poor is probably the best way to describe it. I have a couple of Tablets and phone with me - I got a the Android tablet to work and the kindle could not engage the system at all because of the poor signal My wife's IPAD was ok for a while. Even kit that was ok to start with fell over and had to be restarted or have security re-entered. If you are need WIFI bear this in mind.....it i was not good and well below expectations. Breakfast was very good - the full English and Continental ranges, waffle irons, coffee in flasks or you can have Lattes etc from machines - all good quality, and in a clean modern setting. The Hotel is a short walk (though down a steep Hill to cross the river and then everything is up a steep hill on the other side) from the river and city - very convenient for the Quay, bridges, and riverside sites and restaurants. All in all, much as I expected for a City Centre Hotel - a bit on the tired side. Weak on the maintenance of things like the lift, the A/C the shower in the bath, and the bed quality. These things should be checked / subject to a maintenance regime rather than wait for complaints. Ok if you want to be near the centre, probably not the one for you if you want a bit of luxury.
