Good hotel with lovely breakfast and friendly staff. Tried claiming my hilton honours points what a nightmare very very poor... Yes you get correspondence and emails but then they ask for receipts of when you stayed even though it must still be on their records. Stayed 6 times so far got points for one stay?? Tried calling and everything but poor. One positive again one person on reception went the extra mile hence why I have one set of points. Such a pity as this review would of been so different. Frustrated and disappointed customer...... Collapse

This was our first visit to Newcastle and the Hilton had availability for our preferred travel dates, so we made the booking. As we were arriving on an early morning flight, I emailed the hotel to enquire if an early check –in would be possible. The General Manager replied that this would be no problem. Even before we arrived, this was looking like a great stay! The hotel is situated on the banks of the river Tyne and there are great views of the city from the bar/restaurant and executive lounge. It was 9am when we arrived at the hotel. The receptionist was very embarrassed that she was unable to check us in due to a computer failure. However, we were invited to have a coffee in the executive lounge, and we would be contacted when the issues were resolved. We gratefully accepted this invitation, and spent a relaxing hour in the lounge with a coffee and continental breakfast. Jemma was on duty and was very helpful. Later we were told that the room wasn’t yet ready, so we decided to leave our luggage with the concierge and have a look at what Newcastle had to offer. It is a short walk from the hotel to the Gateshead Interchange, where there are very good public transport links. On returning to the hotel at 2pm, we were surprised to find that the room was not yet ready, but we were allocated another of the same standard. It was a suite and was very nice indeed. The sitting area had a balcony, huge windows overlooking the Tyne Bridge. The bedroom had a very large bed, well appointed wardrobe space with trouser press, iron and a large safe. Surprisingly, there was only one bathrobe in the room. One of the two sitting room lights was not working, and we reported this to a manager. Later that evening we visited the executive lounge where we enjoyed a selection of snacks and very nice sparkling brut. Cath was on duty in the lounge and was very friendly and welcoming. When we returned to our room, we found that the lamp had not been mended, and in the absence of an overhead light, left the room very dark. I had dropped my keys on the sofa and lifted the seat cushion to retrieve them. When I did so, I was astounded to see broken crisps, a hair tie on the base of the sofa, which had been there for some time. We ordered from the room service menu: a sirloin steak and a butterfly chicken breast. Both were accompanied by thick cut chips, cherry tomatoes and mushroom. The food was brought to our room by the same manager to whom we had earlier reported the broken light. I reminded him of his assurance that it was mended, and showed him the mess under the sofa cushion. The following morning, I found that my keys would not open the door to the executive lounge. I had the key recut at reception, but this did not fix the problem. I had to knock on the lounge door to gain access. Luckily, Cath remembered me from the previous evening and let me in. We had breakfast in the “Windows on the Tyne” restaurant. There was an excellent selection of hot and cold item, fruits, breads, pastries. Amongst the cold cuts was the nicest sliced ham I had tasted in a long time. Staff were very friendly and prompt at removing empty plates, etc. Later that evening, when I tried to access the executive lounge, my key once again refused to open the door. The lady on duty, Jeanette let me in and took my keys to re-cut them again. Whatever she did, the keys worked perfectly for the remainder of our stay. Once again, we enjoyed snacks and salads as well as a couple of glasses of Brut sparkling. However , less pleasant was the discovery that although the room lamp had been fixed, the dirt under the sofa cushion was still there, despite being pointed out to a member of management the previous evening. Housekeeping issues were certainly in existence, but surely a Duty Manager would have ensured that this was dealt with, when it was shown to him?? During that evening, I decided to visit reception to speak to a member of management about the issues we had experienced. Individually, they were small issues, but taken in totality, a poor picture of a premium hotel was painted. I met with Claire Neailey, Front of House manager, and she listened to my concerns, and we had a very pleasant dialogue. Claire apologised for the issues and offered to extend our stay as a gesture of good will. This was a very nice gesture, but family commitments meant that we had to decline the offer. Instead, Claire offered to add sufficient points to my Hilton Hhonors account to cover the cost of a night’s stay in the future. This was service recovery at it’s finest. The Hilton Gateshead is a very impressive hotel. The views of the City are superb, food very good, and the staff are very friendly indeed. Despite the issues we experienced, we really enjoyed our short stay at the Hilton Gateshead. Collapse
Spa and afternoon tea

The treatments at the spa were really lovely. Afternoon tea was enjoyable but we only had one choice of sandwich per person. The staff were helpful and validated our parking for the whole of our stay.

Very good hotel, nicely situated with a great view of the Tyne. Good service, good food and comfortable room - reasonably priced and situated in a great area to explore the wider Newcastle. Very friendly service and quick to help when asked.
