Staying in Malta was a last minute decision more determined by BA than anything else… I needed the Tier points to re-qualify for Gold (160tps return to Malta). And thus I booked a 3 night break on a whim. But I left so utterly impressed with both Malta as a tourist destination and also the Hilton Malta too that this will now become a yearly holiday for me! From the moment you land in Malta, if you haven’t before, you’ll realise the airport is quite small from an Arrivals perspective, once disembarked you head straight through to Passport Control and you’re usually out with your bags in-hand within 20mins. All the airport staff were very friendly including Security. Departures is actually quite large with Shops and Restaurants throughout and takes a bit longer to Gate. There are literally Costa Coffee shops everywhere too if you’re thirsty! When you come through Arrivals a useful tip – look to your right and you’ll see the Bus booth, you can buy Smart cards which carry 15eur single trip credit (can be used for 2 people or more) or a weekly pass per person for 21eur…an excellent value option to get EVERYWHERE on Malta, you’ll save a packet and the Buses are very nice all seemed new’ish to me and there are Express routes for all the major hotels with stops not far away. They do take a while though and this is due to the twisty windy roads of Malta more than anything else remember it’s rocky... This time however I had already pre-arranged a private transfer with the Hilton directly, and as promised as I came through Arrivals a man was there with my name on a sign wearing a beaming smile and offered to take my bags. His name was Paul and he was probably the loveliest taxi driver I’ve ever had…anywhere. He gave me a virtually guided tour all the way to the hotel doorstep as he knew it was my first time and it really gave me a wonderful welcome. The charge was already pre-billed to my room and he was insistent I didn’t tip him once we arrived, but I did a small one anyway which he was touched by. The cost was 21eur and in my opinion worth it. Paul also took me back to Airport when I left… ready and waiting to the minute bless him. As soon as I stepped out the taxi, two Hilton porters leaped into action and took my bags out of the boot and brought them through the turn-style automatic door for me…suddenly I was in the Foyer of the most stunning white walled architectural masterpiece. No other way to describe it, with a sea view out of the windows ahead. Light and airy it was absolutely beautiful….I just thought WOW WHAT A HOTEL! The Reception is to the left and you pass the Duty Manager’s desk on the way…nice to see they don’t hide away at this Hilton! Staff were teaming absolutely everywhere, atmosphere had a real buzz of activity and when I presented my HHonors Diamond card the young man immediately offered check-in up at the Executive Lounge to which I agreed would be nice. He personally escorted me up the elevator to the 9th floor and introduced me to Alex the Executive Lounge Supervisor. All the way up I was impressed by how immaculately clean the hotel was…not a speck of dust anywhere never mind trash and this continued throughout my entire stay. Place runs like clockwork. Alex and I enjoyed a lovely 15min chat whilst he checked me in even offered me a Tea during the process. In turned out he put me in a supremely peaceful corner room with a huge balcony…and by huge I mean huge. The square footage was almost that of a standard hotel room! It was also one of the newly renovated rooms, similar neutral style as the Foyer it truly was a beautiful room and I loved it. Large comfy King size bed with a separate Shower and Bath. Credit where it’s due… throughout my short stay Alex was always on hand for any restaurant bookings either within the hotel or outside and great to talk with about touristy things to do on Malta…there didn’t seem to be a single thing he couldn’t arrange. I even asked his help booking an open topped tour bus for a day (20eur and just added to the bill) Superb service! Throughout my stay I dined at several restaurants on site… Vista which is a relaxed lounge style café in the beautiful Foyer itself. They offer the most stunning cakes and sweet treats all made by a local company which were proudly on display for all to see...hard to resist! The Blue Elephant which is a Thai restaurant down on the first floor and boy was this something else. The entire restaurant must have cost Hilton a small fortune to create….even if you aren’t a fan of Thai food you should walk in just to see it. They have literally recreated an entire Thai village with a stream running through the middle!! Unbelievable… Breakfast was the usual impressive Hilton resort affair of just about everything humanely edible served over what feels like half an acre of space… genuinely mind boggling and of course delicious. Chef was always on hand to make fresh eggs and omelettes in front of you, delivers to your table when ready and there was even a waffle man! Yes with Nutella…. Needless to say after 3 mornings of these royal like banquet breakfasts I gained about half a ton. Thank you Hilton! Something important to add is the Location – The Hilton sits a perch on a rock and it’s lovely to walk down into the town, it’s very safe and wealthy. Diamond shop, Casino and various mini malls selling quality clothing etc. This is an upmarket area of Malta make no mistake. We really enjoyed the 45min walk to the left around the bay to ‘The Point’ Mall even has an M&S Food hall in it…and yes a Costa too. Speaking of the latter, they are EVERYWHERE in Malta. To finish, If you’re looking for a Hotel in Malta with a real WOW factor I can honestly encourage this Hilton but I would go a step further and recommend paying the extra for an Executive room too if you aren’t already a Gold or Diamond HHonors member. A combination of the superb Service received combined with the higher floored, more spacious rooms and the excellent selection of food and drink on offer are absolutely worth it. The lounge really is stunning in its own right too, I loved spending the evenings here sipping a glass of Chardonnay. The sublime sea views and numerous balconies really added the cherry on the cake. Probably my favourite Hotel in Malta and for what was on offer, we found it very good value. Staff great, rooms very impressive and they are large and modern with good size bathrooms with all the facilities. Rooms with a sea view, particularly higher up, are well worthwhile, if you can stretch to it. That said first time we stayed there, we had a free upgrade :-). Hotel has all the usual extensive facilities. Everything you need. Great pool, bar etc. The buffet dinner is superb, although it did feel like eating in a canteen and when we were there on a Saturday night, it was extremely busy and noisy. Not quite sure whether it would be suitable for a romantic meal. Also surprisingly they closed off the seating area closest to the sea view, which meant everyone was crammed in. To be fair it was a Saturday night. The other restaurants linked to the hotel are great as well, feel high end and are great, particularly the Thai restaurant. Also the Cream Teas looked really fab! Location is utterly superb, as I've said the staff couldn't do enough for you as well. Its unsurprisingly not cheap to drink and eat there. But if you're on a more limited budget its within an easy walk to the cheap bars and (no where near as good) restaurants. Also has a great supermarket on the corner of the road leading to the hotel. All in all an excellent and very impressive hotel to stay in. Great 5 star hotel. Top Marks. Usual Hilton very high standard! Collapse
