Clean & Great Pillows

My husband and I stayed three nights here at the end of our 15 day trip. Our first night was in a regular room. It was fine but WiFi was not free. Pretty room, though. The next two nights were spent in a tower room. We enjoyed the large room, free WiFi and Tower Club benefits. We had cocktails in the evening and some snacks and a great breakfast in the morning. Great guys in the 7th floor club!!! Collapse

Our booking was last minute for an unscheduled stop over due to a delayed flight and we arrived at the hotel around 10pm with just enough time for a nightcap then bed and, therefore, I cannot comment in great detail in respect of our stay as we had no opportunity for dining, using any hotel facilities or for taking a good nose about. What I can say, however, from our personal stay, the hotel is extremely convenient for Paddington, we were not required to leave the station in order to gain entrance. Check in was okay, if not slightly slower than average to attend to us and, as we used the fast track on departure, I am not fully qualified, in this instance, to make full comment on the service from reception. The service in the brasserie, both for our nightcap order and breakfast was pleasant and friendly and the hotel offers an excellent self-service breakfast with a large, and more than adequate, variety of hot and cold selections. The hotel décor/style is ‘art deco’ and attempts to border on the ‘grand’ with its quality lacquered wood, grand staircase and chandeliers but, for me personally, it felt as if it was purporting to be a bit more upmarket than it actually was. Having the little ones with us, we booked out a superior family room (not specifically by choice but this was the only family room apparently available that night, on their website, when booking) which, although not an overly large room, consisted of 2 good sized, extremely comfortable beds with crisp white linen and comfortable pillows and a very good sized, light and well-presented bathroom but the room had minimal relaxing space and personally, I found that the room was expensive for what it actually offered – the Hilton at Heathrow (pre-holiday) was far less so than Paddington and not only did I find that Hilton more relaxing and casual but the fantastic adjoining rooms, we were allocated, were extremely spacious and well facilitated. That said, the room at Paddington made for a good night’s rest and we found the sleep quality (with minimal noise) to be excellent. The room itself was spotlessly clean and the toiletries quality and overall it did have a certain amount of style and charm. Overall, in my personal opinion, this hotel aims more towards the business guest/fleeting traveller and I felt that this was reflected in the over inflated rate and, for me personally, this Hilton did not offer value for money. This hotel would never have make my list of considerations, for a short break or future stay in London due to its location/value but, if it is a hotel close to Paddington station you need, then this is probably the one for you. There is really only one reason you should consider this hotel: you are traveling on a train out of Paddington station with lots of bags and need maximum convenience. That was the circumstance I found myself in--needing to get to Heathrow in the morning with a lot of luggage. For that specific purpose, this hotel could not be better located--its literally part of the train station, with the platforms just an elevator ride away. However, every other aspect of this hotel is lacking. First and foremost, this is a really dated property that is in serious need of renovation. At one time, I'm sure it was quite grand, but that time has passed. Because it is an old hotel, there are all sorts of shapes and sizes for rooms, but both rooms I was in were musty and dated. The first room had an astounding "banging" noise that was coming from sort some of pipe in the wall, so we were moved to another room. That room overlooked the street, which was very noisy, but street noise is still preferable to clanging sounds every minute or so. Otherwise, there's not much else to say--the staff wasn't particularly friendly and the prices certainly weren't either. I've found this hotel to be priced about the same as most other Hilton properties in London (with the exception of the nearby Metropole, which is cheaper and massive). If you are simply visiting as a tourist, stay in one of the other Hilton's. Yes, Underground access is good here because of the train station, but the local neighborhood is nothing special and certainly not scenic. There are many better neighborhoods to stay in, and most of them have Underground access. If you really need to stay by Paddington and are are traveling a little more light, I would pick the Novotel Paddington, which is about an 8 minute walk but much more modern, pleasant and cheaper. If you've got lots of bags and need maximum convenience, than this is your place, but otherwise, keep looking. Collapse
