My wife and I booked afternoon tea, having first checked that they could cater for my wife's food allergies. We arrived at reception where a pleasant young lady told us it was being served in the Devon Restaurant. But when we got there, we waited for 10 mins. No one was around and there was no bell to summons assistance, so we had to go back up to reception to ask for them to telephone to the restaurant to let them know we had arrived. The gluten and dairy free tea was good , if a little sparse, and my tea was delicious. However the service was poor. No one came to see if everything was okay and no one offered us any more tea or coffee. I also got covered in coffee trying to operate the cafetiere, the top of which was too stiff to push down and I burnt my arm but the waiter was solicitous and quick to bring out the burns 1st aid kit. We also had difficulty in paying the bill as there was again no one around, involving another trip upstairs to reception. It is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting but the service needs to be improved. Collapse

The Highbullen hotel lies in an impressive building with beautifully manicured grounds and fantastic views of the beautiful North Devon countryside. When we arrived we felt that we were treated well by the staff and were asked twice when being passed on the stairs if we required help with luggage which I thought was lovely. We stayed in the west room which had a view of mainly the car park (can't have it all I suppose) the bed was so comfortable and there were some nice touches, a good television etc there was some staining under the glass on the desk that could do with touching up, the shower was dated and the head tilted and couldn't tighten, it also came out as a dribble (this wasn't noticed till next morning just before departure) the shower definitely needs replacing it's so old and nackered, not in keeping with heat your trying to achieve, we had a bath instead! We had dinner in the Devin View and oh my goodness it was superb, the service was lovely and we got to choose our table right by the window. We were bowled over by the quality of the food it was absolutely delicious! Certainly fine dining, well presented, good flavours and well matched ingredients! Breakfast the same, great choice and beautiful quality and those views, stunning!! The drinks are expensive and if I'm being honest not very good! The bar was filled with fairly unhappy customers who were either whinging about the price, the wait or both, the bar man was extremely friendly but seemed a bit rushed at points. I think you should create a good, fair cocktail list with some nice transparently priced bar menus so it doesn't come as a shock to people I'm sure you'd gave a higher turn out at the bar with more people taking advantage of fairly priced drinks than sneaking off to their rooms for one of their own. An enjoyable stay with food, service and views being at the top for me!!!! Collapse

Stayed here for a 3 night stay. From the moment we entered the hotel we knew it was going to be a good stay. The building set in acres of land including an excellent 18 hole golf course was stunning. Well furnished, clean and offering beautiful views from all the communal areas. The receptionist was efficient and we were greeted with a smile. Check in was a whizz. We booked a feature room and was not disappointed, views to die for overlooking the rolling hills and you can see for miles. The same view is offered from the lounges and the main restaurant (where you have breakfast and a la carte dinning). The furnishings in the rooms were of a good quality, bed was very comfy. Our room was at the back of the hotel, it was quiet. Bathroom was spacious and well maintained. Our break came inclusive of Breakfast and evening meals. We ate in both restaurants and could no fault either of them. The a la carte restaurant was extra special however and food excellent!! The waiting staff were friendly, polite and efficient. The bar area is welcoming and cosy and the pool table and billiard rooms a nice addition, the pool area (located a short walk from the main hotel in the Pavilion) looked very nice with a jacuzzi and the gym was well equipped. Beauty rooms are also available with lots of treatments on offer. Location of this hotel is a bit off the beaten track particularly if you don't know the area, but Satnav gets you there, however it was not too far by car to the coast and other attractions. Really hope we can stay here again would highly recommend. Very relaxing. Classy hotel. Well done Highbullen Hotel! Collapse

I recently stayed at this hotel on a special deal, 3 nights for the price of two. We were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of accommodation, food and service. The deal included dinner Bed and breakfast on all three nights and included the fine dinning restaurant. We had a feature room with wonderful views. All staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. The hotel has great facilities including, golf, spa indoor and outdoor pools as well as tennis courts and is in a picturesque setting. The only minor gripe was the lack of pressure of water for our shower! Collapse
