Booked this because it was close to a golf club i was due to play at. It looked like a quiet retreat where i could relax for the evening. I wasn't bothered about a high end stay but hoped for a bar meal and bed. the location is a bit off the beaten track but ideal for me. Reception went smoothly and the reception area and front of the hotel is all very impressive.... However, my room which was a standard double was on the 2nd floor which is accessed through the narrowest flight of stairs they can legally get away with. Smaller and it must contravene fire regulations. The room itself had sloping walls from the roof and was bearly high enough ceilings to walk around in places. the bath room was tiny but adequate if you wanted a shower. To call the bed a double would be a joke!! even in Japan the beds would be bigger. and even allowing for it's size it was the most uncomfortable bed i think i have ever tried to sleep on. i did go to the bar for a bar meal which i chose as a beef chilli with tortilla chips. The portion was good size but the tortillas were served under the chilli and totally swamped so that you couldn't get to them. By the time you did they were a soggy corn mush. The chilli itself was piping hot but not spicy. It had more herbs in it than chilli. It was a mince stew with corn goo. On the up side the staff were all pleasant and helpful. But not quite enough to feel it was worth complaining to. So in short, this places looks pretty and the staff are nice, Just don't sleep here or eat anything. Collapse

Warm welcome. Beautiful location and impressive main house. We stayed in a very spacious room in the 'lodge". All decorated and furnished to a very high standard- so far so good! We didnt test the bed out on arrival as we expected it to be of the same high standard as the rest of the room. The problem started when we returned later and tried to sleep! On the outside of the lodge building were exterior lights which shone into our room, dispite pulling all the window blinds down it still streamed in illuminating our room all night! Proper curtains across the bay would stop this happening. But worse still was the bed! This really let the room down. The springs were lumpy and creaked very time we moved, it was the most uncomfortable thing Iv ever laid on! We hardly slept at all! And there was dried blood stains on the duvet cover! Not good! Breakfast and staff were above average. So yes it was a lovely hotel and we would recommend it but test the bed on arrival and check out the exterior lighting! Collapse

Great location for bottom of M25 zone. Stunning quiet location, set in its own grounds down a lovely private drive. Grand old Manor House converted to a good modern standard. Room wasn't big but well equipped apart from the TV which was unwatchable and needs placing in a skip. Evening bar area annoyingly had football playing which did ruin my relaxing evening drink, don't see a need for footie in a country manor bar. Breakfast nice, staff nice, overall I'd return. Collapse

Wow - so many bad reviews for this place. I am glad to say I cannot add to them. OK there was not much of a happy welcome from the young receptionist but she did her job, although without much of a smile. I stayed in a single room in what I think is the annexe. It was more than adequate for my needs. Very clean. Bath. Coffee, tea and biscuits. TV. The hotel has a bar and restaurant, although I did not eat there. Checkout is 10am which is a little early I think. Breakfast was very good. Lots of healthy options as well as classic English. And clean bright linen table cloths with lovely views from a lot of the tables. I will be travelling often to Betchworth in the coming year and recently stayed in the pub close by - no contest - I will definitely come back to Hartsfield Manor. Collapse

On first impression wow!!! What a beautiful, delicate little gem. That's if you've been given a room in the manor house itself. It used to be a De Vere venue and I have faith that the new owners might be able to do it a bit more justice. It's still visibly suffering from its previous owners. I notice from the reviews that the management are aware of cleanliness issues and seem to be assuring this is being rectified but the proof is in the hotel itself. Dust and spiders and their webs are definitely still an issue. The staff are lovely and friendly and I would definitely return but stay in the manor house only. The mattresses are in desperate need of replacing. I hope they manage to lose the left over De Vere traces soon.. Collapse
