Off to a shaky start--top notch customer service saved the day

I entered the motel and was immediately struck by an enormous kitschy fountain in the shape of a harp, occupying most of the front lobby. A grouping of tired looking furniture was off to the side. All that was missing were a few plastic flamingos. This was not a great start and it only got worse. When I had made the reservation, almost three weeks prior, I had noted that I was a Diamond Hhonors member and would appreciate an upgrade. When I got to the motel, I was rather miffed to discover that I had not been assigned any upgrade. I was told the hotel was completely full. Sorry. This seems to be a current problem with the Florida properties--they assign every last room and do not put aside any rooms at all as upgrades for frequent guests. Especially surprising because I was not there in high season. Since I got to the motel early in the afternoon, I had until 6 to cancel. I sat down at the computer to check out availability for other motels in the area. And that is when A'veri Ruggiero, who was manning the front desk, magically pulled an alternative room option out of her hat; she assured me I would like it. And I did. Enormously. Competent customer service makes all the difference in a stay. What would have been a quite low rating has turned into a five. I have attached pictures of the enormous apartment style suite in which I ended up. It had a narrow kitchen with a microwave, stove and large fridge and freezer, a breakfast nook with two chairs, adjacent to the kitchen, a huge living room featuring two sofas, a dining table with six chairs and room to seat a crowd, a desk area, a very large closet and a huge bedroom with a king bed. The vanity, with plenty of counter space for toiletries, was outside the bathroom. Everything in the room was very clean. The bed featured the Hampton Gold standard bedding package with a freshly laundered duvet cover. Pleased, I went downstairs to get a coffee from the stand, which the motel keeps stocked 24/7, and to check out the common areas. That is when I noticed the attention to detail of the staff of this hotel. Other Hamptons I have been at (and I have been at quite a few lately) have things missing--the water is not hot, the coffee cup lids do not fit on the coffee cups (seriously--this can be a real problem when one is carrying a hot drink), there is no herbal tea available outside of breakfast...At this motel, EVERYTHING was perfect. There were even honey packets available. I do like to put a bit of honey rather than sugar in my herbal tea. The manager, James Lalanne, takes great pride in his hotel and a personal interest in how guests are faring. I have not often seen a manager as present as James was. Though my initial impression of the hotel was that it was chintzy, this did not prove to be the case. The pool is top notch--there are lots of loungers scattered on the deck on which to catch some rays. The business center features two computers--internet speed was fine, both in the lobby and in the rooms. The breakfast area was nicely decorated and there is a HAPPY HOUR! from 5 to 7 and warm cookies distributed after 7:30. This is one of the really nice features of a Homewood Suites. I have not ever seen it at a Hampton. Breakfast was standard Hampton, with my favorite make your own waffle station. Parking is free. The staff in this hotel is superb and seriously interested in the guests having a nice experience. I have no clue why the past few reviews were so bad. I had an exemplary experience, after a shaky start, and would certainly come back. There is also a quite nice shopping mall just down the road, with a Ross for Less, a TJ Maxx and a Marshalls. Also a big movie theatre. Collapse

People smoke outside and immediately adjacent to the AC intake for the rooms on the second and third floors. As a result the rooms reek of smoking. Also, all night people are out there talking and smoking until after two in the morning. It might be better on the third and fourth floors and on the side away from the entrance but the first and second floors are not good choices. Collapse

We choose this hotel to be in the middle of our family. The hotel is nice and clean and our room was spacious. However after we returned from Thanksgiving Dinner the hotel was like a night club. People were hanging out in front of the hotel. We tried to lay down for the evening and get our 19 mo son down for the night and the next thing we knew people were screaming, slamming doors and it went on for a hour and half and we could not take anymore. We checked out at 10 pm. Collapse

Love this place! I have stayed here a few times for business. They have a little happy hour, decent complimentary breakfast and during the week, Cookies and Milk. Just a nice, quiet place to stay. The rooms are good size. I prefer the first floor because there is always hot water and coffee in the lobby. Collapse
