After a very tough year i decided to treat the wife to a weekend away and having heard good things about the grove decided to go out and book an executive suite in the mansion (Room 43 for the 16th December 17). Arriving at the Grove around lunch time we were confronted with a queue of about 5 cars for valet parking. after a long 5 minutes of the queue not moving or anyone coming out to great us we gave up and went and parked our own car. The hotel reception was nicely decorated and very welcoming. We asked at check-in if it was possible to switch our reservation from the Stables to the Buffet but was told that they couldn't squeeze in a table for 2 at any point for the night so had to stay with what we had. Other than that Check in was fine and the staff all seemed pleasant. The Room - (Executive Suite room 43) first opinions were that is was smaller than i was expecting but still very nice. A large flat screen tv above a working fire place (which someone will come and light for you if you want to use it which is a nice touch) and all the normal amenities you would expect from a 5 star hotel room. The Spa -From the mansion rooms you need to pass through the main reception and is about a 10 minute walker form there. Once at the spa its a bit of a walk from the gents changing room (where the sauna is) to the pool which means walking behind the main spa reception and up some stairs so make sure you find a locker with a robe in.. unfortunately this was something that was easier said than done for me. The pool is a decent size with a Jacuzzi at the bottom. There is an ok amount of loungers and a steam room that fits about 6 - 8 people but that is it. The PROBLEM - Upon returning from the spa to relax in the room in front of the fire and tv for a bit it was time for the wife to start getting ready to go out for dinner (reservation booked for 8:15pm) as we were still covered in chlorine from the pool. Turning the bath taps on it came apparent very quickly that there was no cold water... the water was so hot it burnt my wife's nail varnish off one of her nails. We called down to reception (6:30ish) to be told that they know of the problem and it would be sorted in 5/10 minutes. 30 minutes passed and still nothing. We call down again to be told the same thing.. will be fixed in 5/10 minutes. Again 30 minutes later still no cold water and one now stressed out wife due to the lack of time to get ready... I called down again and was told the same thing 5/10 minutes so not believing this i asked if some ice and bottles of water could be bought up as the bath (wish was run nearly an hour ago now was still far too hot to get in. 40 minutes pass and still no sign of the ice or the cold water so i called down and spoke to the manger. She said that they didnt know when the water would be fixed and would chase the water and ice. As the time was now 805pm the likelihood of getting to our reservation on time was nil so asked the manager if she would let the restaurant know and she said she would. The Ice turned up shortly after that call (surprise surprise) and we headed down to the restaurant an hour late. not an ideal time to sit down to eat ... 9.15pm... The Stables - We arrived at the stables and apologized for being late but mentioned that they were meant to have been told by management that we weren't going to be there on time but restaurant apparently hadn't received any calls and if anything looked annoyed that we had turned up at the point of their last orders (9 -9:30 pm) and put us on a cramped table right by the frequently used main door. Niggles to one side the food was very good. The Sleep - we came back to our room to find that house keeping hadn't closed the door properly and we were able to just give the door a push to open without having to use any key. After checking all our belongings were still there we got into bed after a stressful and rushed evening to come across a constantly running toilet which isnt the quietest of things. Buffet Breakfast - £25 a head and had a decent spread. the chef taking the poached eggs order could have looked happier rather than looking like we were putting her out for asking for them but that maybe me being critical. Check Out - Not once was i asked how was my stay so waited right until the last moment to see if i was going to be asked before i raised my vast disappointment to which we got told "im sorry to hear that...which card would you like to pay with?" Had i not prepaid (£600 odd) for the room they would have struggled to get anything out of me for that night stay. I get problems happen that are beyond the control of the hotel but how it was managed was a joke to say the least. At no point was any compensation offered at all. Not even a call or a note apologizing from the manager. I am in my early 30's and cant help but think that if i was the age of their normal clientèle i would have been treated differently. Collapse

The quality of the service and the warmth of the welcome has barely changed over the years. On this visit the hotel was full with a Conference going on. However such is the size and versatility of the business centre you were hardly aware of this. Apart from a pretty long walk to hotel bedrooms ( tip - valet park and get the concierge to deliver your luggage) this is a comfortable place with nooks and crannies to find to sit in peace. Golf and a Spa are added attractions - both of great quality . Collapse

We went to The Grove last night as part of a large group for a Christmas party. I have been to The Grove in the past and been impressed. Not last night though. On arrival the welcome drinks were being handed out by staff who clearly had no or little experience. This became more evident during the evening when pre-ordered meals for guests with specific dietary requirements were no different to the other dishes served- for example no pork resulted in a plate with pigs in blankets on it. When we wanted to order additional wine this proved to be a real challenge and we resorted to having to point at the bottle we wanted on the table and wine list. Mass catering is a always going to be a challenge but in truth I expected so much more of The Grove. Unremarkable food, amateur staff and expensive to boot. Collapse

My husband & I were treated by our lovely neighbours to afternoon tea as an 80th birthday present. We were met by Noemi who made us feel welcome immediately. We were taken to a beautiful, comfortable lounge & shown to our table. We were served by a truly wonderful waitress, Vera, and another young lady called Dorian. We could not have been taken care of better, even if we had been royalty. The afternoon tea was first class, extremely tasty, varied and plentiful. The champagne went down a treat too. We will definitely be going back and will recommend it to all our family and friends. Stan & Hedy Beecham from Hertfordshire Collapse

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with happy faces very efficient staff on reception, the room was big and bed great. Very old and charming atmosphere. The Stable restaurant was nice and also the Glasshouse bar. The walled garden was great, the heated pool awesome. The grounds where stunning, recommend taking the free bike and cycle with the lake...... Breakfast was great with lots of choice and the room service menu was several pages long, not the usual stripped down version. And the quality did not disappoint. Balcony with beautiful views into the formal gardens was fantastic with beautiful modern art sculptures. Even the car park was amazing... being filled with exotic cars and more fancy cars than I've ever seen in one place and a bright red Lamborghini and Ferrari parked at the front. The minus is. Very big and confusing corridors. Very expensive cocktails in the bar.... Collapse
