Recently had a Christmas party here & I doubt we would return. The hotel itself is lovely. The staff were very good. However, the food was such a disappointment. Although delicious, the portions were ridiculously tiny. On a table of 9 there were only 2 small dishes of veg served, there was just not enough of anything really. We all left still hungry. Having paid almost £40 each we all felt it was not worth the money. Also paying different prices at the bar for the same rounds of drinks was not good Collapse

We visited the restaurant for lunch and were very pleased with the meal and the service. The ordinary a la carte menu was not available, but there was plenty of choice on the festive menu. The service was not rushed, but was attentive, and we enjoyed coffee and mince pies in the lounge area afterwards. The fish dish, cod with bubble and squeak and a tomato basil sauce, was particularly good. A shooting party returning with gun dogs and pheasants contributed to the festive atmosphere! We will go back again....the afternoon tea we spotted at a table before leaving looked very attractive! Collapse

6 friends met on Friday afternoon after work for an overnight stay before heading off to the coast for a 10 mile walk along the Cleveland way. The building and grounds are beautiful and we spent the evening sat by the fire enjoying the company and drinks. Dinner was lovely in the restaurant and we were offered a private room. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean. There was tea, coffee and biscuits in the room to enjoy as well as some toiletries. Our only negative was that as 2 out of the 6 of us arrived after 5pm due to work commitment we missed out on the cakes which was disappointing and there was no alternative offered such as a hot drink which would have been appreciated. Stayed just the one night with a Virgin Experience voucher. Wish it could have been for longer. Stayed in the Ingleby room which is massive with loads of storage, seating, lovely soft furnishings and a nice view over the gardens. I am 6 foot and I could lay long across the bed and my feet still didn't hang over the edge! Pillows on the hard side. Dined in the restaurant and my wife and I both had fabulous meals - all 3 courses. I had partridge, lamb and milles feuilles and my wife had black pudding, pork and sticky toffee pudding. Perfectly cooked and presented. My wife found a small sheet of grease proof paper, no big drama and was adequately dealt with when we informed the waitress. Even better was when we checked out I found out they'd knocked off what we owed for drinks - wasn't expecting it and we were both really appreciative. Great customer service An earlier review complained at the size of breakfast, well maybe their expectation was a buffet where you can pile your plate with food. Breakfast here is freshly cooked and consisted of 2 rashes of bacon, egg of your choice, sausage, tomato, hash brown as well as toast, cereal, fruit etc... how much else would you want to eat? All staff are friendly, efficient and all have a positive influence on the hotel's atmosphere. Oh and there's a open fire which we loved. If you want a well appointed country hotel, fantastic restaurant, not too stuffy and brilliant staff come here. We will be back... Collapse

A great setting in lovely grounds. The staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. We were attending a function and had booked two rooms at the same time as we were attending with friends. Our rooms had been booked together approximately 6 weeks earlier. When we arrived the hotel had a room reserved for our friends but no details of our booking but luckily we had a hotel booking reference in our name, to prove we had reserved a room. We were eventually found a room but when compared with our friends was disappointing. It was small and the windows were rotting and in need of urgent repair. It was described as a superior room but as we had paid the same amount as our friends we were disappointed with it. It did not feel like a superior room and did not reach the same standard as our friends. I spoke to the manager and described our disappointment but at that time was informed that there were no other rooms available and that we were in a superior room. At this point I must point out that the reception staff and the manager dealt with our concerns in an extremely pleasant and professional manner but were unable to help. Later in the evening just as dinner was being served the manager did approach us and informed us he had found another room as a guest had failed to appear. He gave us the option to change rooms. We were only booked in for one night and as the meal had just been served we declined. It did however show the willingness of the manger to attempt to rectify the initial mistake by the hotel re our booking which I thanked him for. The initial mistake was the fault of the hotel and took some time to sort out therefore having a detrimental effect on our stay. Nothing was offered by the hotel in an effort to compensate us for their mistake. The whole episode was a disappointing experience but we did not allow it to distract us from enjoying the evening. I would give this hotel another chance but the moral of the story is if you have reserved a room well in advance check with the hotel that they have reserved on in your name even if you have received a booking reference from them.
