Had a lovely overnight stay at Graywalls. Library bar and hallway all have lovely roaring fires to sit by. Dining room is lovely and the food was very tasty and well presented. Our room was 18 which apparantly Nick Faldo stayed in when he won the Open in 1992. Lovely views of Muirfield and the sea from the window. Breakfast was also delicious. When we were checking out the waiter that had served our evening meal and breakfast was out scraping the windscreen of our car as it was frosty. Lovely touch which we had definitely not expected. Very helpful and friendly staff. Lovely relaxing stay, would recommend highly to others. Collapse

We decided to go to Graywalls for part of our honeymoon trip to Scotland. This place is the perfect place to recharge. Within 5 minutes of entering the hotel we were on a first name basis with the majority of the people caring for us. This place has an elegant, charming, family and historic feel. The grounds are beautiful and secluded. We were able to relax in the library with tea immediately. Room: King size bed. Clean. Cool temperature on arrival, we were given a great space heater right away upon request. The bathroom was clean and recently updated. We were so happy with the heated flooring. Quiet. We didn't hear anyone else. Beautiful, picturesque views of rolling countryside. Free WiFi. Grounds: The gardens were beautiful and well kept even though we visited in December. Chez Roux: The restaurant is awesome. Very easy to make reservations. Drinks are scheduled 30 minutes before your reservation. We decided to take part in the prefix menu included in our room rate. The staff would have allowed us to order anything and alter our dinner as requested (of course with a reasonable up charge). Food quality was AMAZING. Presentation was top notch. The second night of our stay my husband requested a specific table, for some reason we were seated somewhere else but we were happier with our table. The maitre d' right away was going to switch our seat and seemed willing to do anything to make us happy. We were happy with our decision to stay at our table. Staff was ridiculously attentive. I felt as though we were the only people there! We live in Chicago, we are used to great food and service... and loud restaurants. This place is great! Great food, and amazing service as previously stated. AND QUIET! What a nice change. We decided to take dessert in the library and were happily taken to a quiet romantic seat by the fire. Seriously, I can't say enough about the staff. We will be sending a thank you note to everyone there. This place is charming and top notch. The staff MAKE this place. Don't come here if: You're looking for modern amenities. You're looking to party hard. You're looking for a family vacation with a lot for kids to do. Perfect for: Romantic couples get away Quiet place to recharge and relax Impeccable service Gorgeous quiet views Collapse

I'm a big fan of Greywalls and as a local have visited many times for lunches and dinners. My wife and I even held our 40th birthday party there. To date we have not had a bad meal there...until Dec 27 2016. The day didn't get off to a great start. Our table of 11 was booked for 2-2.30. The usual format is that you have pre-dinner drinks and canapes in the library, browse the menu and then get shown to your table. We arrived at 2.15 and the staff member who greeted us seemed very keen to take us directly to our table. It was only after our insistence that he backed down and showed us through to the lounge. We thought this was slightly odd as the restaurant appeared very quiet - a view which was confirmed when we we were shown to the table and indeed where the only people dining that afternoon. This minor irritation would have been overlooked had the food been up to Greywalls usual high standards, however it was not. The fish course from the daily menu (which approximately half of our party ordered) was dry while the meat dish (a normally very tender brisket) was as tough as old boots. When I mentioned this to the maitre d'hotel he disappeared for a few minutes and returned with the one line you should never hear from someone in that position: 'oh, I've tasted it and so has the chef and we think it is OK'. I pointed out that the chef was cooking for his customers and not himself and that just because he says something is fine doesn't change our view that it was not. Anyway, the slight consolation were the desserts and cheeses which were excellent and the fact that they did take money off the bill to reflect our dissatisfaction with the mains which was roughly equivalent to the optional service charge. All in all we left with the feeling that with a busy Christmas and Boxing Day out of the way they just couldn't be bothered on the 27th. Collapse

The hotel and restaurant is understated elegance of a period. Extremely relaxing not too formal either. The food is classically french and absolutely faultless and service that was attentive appreciative but not pushy ...infact perfect. I hope that the service charge is appropriately allocated to the staff doing such a excellent job in fronting a Roux establishment at the coalface. Thank you very much for a great dining experience. Understated luxury hotel. Dinner there is a delight. The breakfast menu is extensive and well prepared. Our room was quiet and had all the facilities you would expect. Staff were unobtrusive and helpful. Recommended for any kind of short break. No tea/coffee facilities in room. Free wifi, but it was quite slow at times. Best to have a torch if you are walking to or from the hotel from Gullane in the dark, as part of the way is unlit. Collapse
