Had our wedding at The Great Victoria 2 weeks ago. I stayed the night before with my bridesmaids in interconnecting rooms which was lovely, although maybe slightly small. The staff at The Victoria were very pleasant and helpful when we asked for anything. I don't usually write anything negative at all and am a very positive person but I do feel that there's a few points regarding wedding planning that I need to address. We booked our wedding with the wedding planner named Rachel who was very nice and professional. She left The Victoria a few months after our booking, being replaced by a new wedding planner named Chrissie. Chrissie is a lovely lady, very friendly and she was kind enough to lend us a few bits for the tables and stage. However, these are the points that I feel I need to address: First of all I must say that we wanted a very relaxed wedding with not too much fuss or strict times for everything. Thank god we were so laid back otherwise I would have been worried. 1. Took 3 meetings to confirm the interconnecting rooms were booked. These were originally booked for the 4th floor but by the time the rooms were actually booked, we had to stay on the 3rd floor with slightly smaller rooms 2. I was told that I'd be able to sort the room out the night before but this didn't happen as the room was needed for breakfast the following day. We were originally told that breakfast would be in the other room due to it being our wedding 3. We hired chair covers from Chrissie and one week prior to the wedding she messaged to say that she didn't have enough lace covers and we could either have all organza covers or a mixture of lace and organza. I actually hate organza chair covers but went with the mixture as it was too short notice to find an alternative. To be fair, on the day only I could tell the difference but it still wasn't what we originally asked for 4. On the morning of the wedding (we got married at 3.45pm) I was told that Chrissie was due at the hotel at 10am and I would be able to discuss the room layout with her then. We were supplying our own centre pieces and sweets table so wanted to set everything out. I went back down to reception at 10 to meet with Chrissie. She told me she had a meeting which would last one hour, I think this was for a wedding consultation. I then went back one hour later whilst my bridesmaids started to get ready, waited for a further 25 minutes and then decided to give up on thinking I would be meeting up with Chrissie. Instead, I went through everything with my sister so that she would know how to set things out for me. I felt that I was being the inconvenience to Chrissie as I was interrupting her wedding consultation, I think this was actually poor planning on her part 5. Chrissie did eventually ring my room and I managed to meet her for about 15 minutes. During this conversation, Chrissie asked me to confirm that we were having a square cake. Yes we were, an email was sent to Chrissie one week before the wedding to advise we would need a square cake stand but I never received a reply. I was then told that she'd actually brought a round cake stand but would 'send her husband home for another one', not very professional 6. I then started to get ready myself and had numerous phone calls from Chrissie regarding the set up for the DJ, all issues that I thought had been sorted out at our previous meeting prior to the wedding. She also rang to ask where we wanted the photographer to set up, again things that I thought had already been discussed. These were issues that I really didn't want to be dealing with whilst I was trying to relax and have my hair and make up done Despite this, we had a perfect day and I would recommend The Victoria as a venue, just be prepared to back up all your meetings with an email and organise as much for yourself as possible!! I was told that the food was lovely (I didn't have time to eat) and all of our guests had a fantastic time celebrating with us. The staff were very good and they also moved all of my things from the interconnecting room into the penthouse suite, something that I was very grateful for. We stayed in the penthouse suite that night, which was stunning although we couldn't use one of the baths as the plug didn't work. Collapse

Horrible room with paint cracking off the walls everywhere (117) All the windows had been painted or nailed shut Watermarks of condensation that had clearly dripped down the walls at some stage. Bathroom with no ventilation whatsoever compounded this issue I asked to speak to the manager on arrival. 40 mins later someoen came to the room despite agreeing with me that the room was not up to standard the only remedy they were prepared to offer was an upgrade at an additional £90 - on top of the £68 already paid. He said that he had no authority to do anything else and that no one was available who could deal with this issue. He suggested that he would inform the general manager who would discuss with me at breakfast. I suggested that if this was an issue he could call my phone - no one appeared and no phone call indicating that this hotel really doesn't take the concerns of its customers seriously. As per title avoid like the plague Collapse

The best thing about this hotel for me personally, is that it was unbelievably close , stone throwing close, to the Courts ( and just as close to the station) . And in fairness it was pretty good value , although they showed little flexibility when I needed to extend my stay for an extra night and then through circumstances cancel it. The staff were polite but unyielding with my situation and I felt a little short changed . I was at one stage politely told by the male receptionist that I was welcome to remain as long as I wished in my room ( THAT I HAD PAID FOR) which is one of the most ludicrous things that has ever been said to me. To set against that , It is right to say that when I arrived the female receptionist had been very helpful indeed when it turned out I had idiotically booked for the wrong week !!! Despite the beautiful exterior, it's a little basic, but the room was clean and breakfast was better then some ( although the coffee on my second day was worse then none !) So like I say, for the price it's better then ok and great for the court . I paid £60-70 per night with breakfast. Collapse

Came for two nights and thought I was treating myself to a 'nice' hotel. Afraid not, external to main entrance looks tired and in need of some TLC. I understand this can be very expensive but just a good clean would help. Lots of litter and cigarettes. Was checked into a room that was a lot like the front entrance, tired and in need. Peeling paint, stains on the wall, cracked sink and a massive gap under the adjoining room door (I rolled up a towel for both parties modesty). My main complaint about the room was the temperature, no thermostat to control, after speaking with the front desk the member of staff informed me the heating went off at 19.00 and I couldn't open the windows because the building was listed. It was 20.30 and the radiator was red hot. We didn't ask to change rooms but the member of staff informed us that the hotel was fully booked and he would have a fan put in the room. My partner and I left for the evening returning at approximately 23.00 to find a very small fan in our room doing its best. Late and very tired we went to bed. After a VERY uncomfortable, sleepless and sweaty night I went to the front desk to request some help and was told that other rooms were available and the only excuse that could be given was laziness from the previous staff member. We were given keys to a different room and happily, but very tiredly repacked and moved but after 5 minutes of being in the new room a shower of water came through the ceiling and we had to move again. Time for a little moan to the manager who offered some wine etc but as I hadn't slept the night before and was facing a drive back to London in the morning I declined but requested the General Manager call me on my mobile as I was told he would be in the next day. He didn't call so I did, only to be told he wasn't working but would definitely call me on his return. That was two weeks ago. Do I want a response that says ' I have spoken to my staff' and 'please come and stay again so we can make it up to you' No thanks. I paid to stay in a hotel, this did not happen. Collapse
