Didn't get off to a great start as the hotel didn't seem to be expecting us or have our booking. Eventually booked in once booking form provided and copied. Hoped to get a light bar snack before going out, thought food available 10-10 but only sandwiches available. Comfortable room, good night's sleep, not really bothered by planes as only staying one night. Excellent choice of breakfast, pleasant restaurant with view over the lake. Would stay there again. I think most of the rooms are new, or newly refurbished. How do I know? Because quite a few things are missing and need attention. Pros: - Lovely setting, just a few minutes from the centre of Bishop's Stortford - Nicely landscaped gardens - Decently-sized car-park - Outside terrace bar Cons: - Very noisy from aircraft noise, very low an immediately overhead (but you knew that, right?) - The advertised WiFi you can almost forget. The signal is incredibly poor in most parts of the hotel and non-existent in some places and bedrooms - The en-suites are missing some really basic stuff, so there's soap, but no soap dish, no toothbrush glasses, no face-cloths provided, no toilet brush, none of the amenity items such as nail files or cotton buds and they need more hooks for toilet bags, clothes, etc. - The bedrooms are also missing some key items. No clock-radio of any kind, no glasses for water or bottles of water and no information on the locality - The bed is on wheels, which is OK in itself, but just don't turn around on it too much or it will wheel itself off around the room! Free-running wheels and a wooden floor mean it's a skateboard! And - if it's hot weather (as has been so recently), the bedrooms boil. No air-conditioning and very little breeze available by opening the windows. I would hope things improve as these are all relatively small things that can be corrected quickly, other than perhaps more time and expense needed on WiFi (a deal-breaker) and on air-con (which I suspect won't ever be done because of cost and relatively infrequent need). No ironing board, but you can ask for one to be brought to the room, which is fine, really. The staff were generally friendly, but a bit more willingness to make eye-contact would be nice. Collapse

This is a lovely relaxing hotel. Booked it as its close to the airport. Only took 15 mins to get to the airport parking. The hotel is just off the motorway making it very easy to find. Plenty of free parking. Reception greeting was very friendly and efficient. My room was clean, spacious and modern. The bathroom was new and had a powerful walk in shower. I dined in the restaurant and the steak was cooked perfectly and tasted excellent. There are planes flying overhead constantly as expected but this didn't affect my sleep at all. The full English breakfast was tasty and check out friendly again. Overall I was very pleased and would definately use again as a stop over. Collapse

Went here for a wedding, can't fault the food, drinks a little expensive and you are a captive audience. Rooms clean as well. Sadly trip spoilt for one reason. Seems you have a dishonest member of staff GHM - whilst at the bar last eve, dropped £70 from pocket. Went back to bar 10 mins later as was told by a member of staff it had been found and handed into reception. Imagined that it would be safe till next morning and woe and behold reception have no idea about it. A shame Collapse

We stayed at the Great Hallingbury Manor Hotel on a Friday night before flying from Stansted. Our room was modern, spotlessly clean and very spacious. Our only regret was the weather, which prevented us from enjoying the lovely gardens. Being so close to the airport we were not at all surprised by the noise of the aircraft, but this stopped overnight. The hotel thoughtfully provided earplugs, but we did not need them. We had a lovely welcome when we arrived and a taxi was ordered to take us to the airport in the morning. The cost of £17 was a bit of a jolt, but it seems to be standard for the area. We had a meal in the restaurant in the evening and while it was not cheap, it was excellent. Would definitely stay again. Collapse

Bitterly disappointed we chose to stay here for the night after getting back to Stansted airport late. The staying part: Wow it's noisy in the room. Given where it is more effort should have been made with noise suppression. The double glazing was wholly inadequate. When the sound of a fan or generator can be heard loud and clear in the room, the chance of an aircraft being kept out are NIL. Providing 'complementary' ear plugs is welcoming, but calling them 'complementary' is a bit of an insult because things are normally 'complimentary' because they are a nice, thoughtful treat - e.g chocolates - not because they're absolutely flipping essential! And if you don't like wearing ear plugs??????? Then there's the wooden floors or mock wooden floors. Unless it's carpet guess what happens? All noises echo so when some people walk down the corridor at 6am they may as well be rustling a crisp packet next to your ear. Perhaps that wouldn't be so bad if the door was properly sound proofed or properly fitted. The huge gap at the bottom did nothing to keep noise out from people walking down the corridor, opening their bedroom doors or opening one of the interns doors to walk through to other parts of the hotel. Noisy, noisy, noisy = lack of sleep. The wifi didn't work in the room, no idea where the router was or how many there were supposed to be but no wifi. That would have been ok if there was a mobile signal, but there wasn't! Utter rubbish. TV next - erm how in 2017 can you not get a tv signal strong enough for a tv to show the channels!? No BBC1, 2, ITV, Channel 4, 5, etc, etc. It's not all bad though. The lesser watched channels showing utter rubbish are watchable, phew!?!? The fancy 'wet room' bathroom with no shower cubicle is a nice touch, oh except the designed clearly didn't realise that gravity means water drops downwards and when it hits a surface (like your body/head/etc) it splashes and it splashes outside the shower part and over the grate to collect the water. This equals wet bathroom floor. That's quite a good touch and the designer should perhaps be commended ....... or simply fired!? Temperature was a slight problem too. The thing that looked like it may have something to do with temperature didn't work. No amount of switch flicking, screen touching or anything else made it work or made any difference, so not only was the night's sleep interrupted by being too noisy it was also too warm to sleep even when there was no noise. Food? Didn't eat there and thank goodness based on the room experience. What was good? It looked full of character from the outside, there was plenty of space in our room, it was very close to the airport, there was plenty of space in the car park. In case you hadn't guessed, overall avoid this place. Collapse
