My boyfriend and I had a very stressful holiday season, and booked a weekend here to get away for some romantic time together. The hotel lists itself as a 4 star property, but we have not had anything approaching a 4 star experience. We were not told upon booking that there is a strike at the hotel, and so housekeeping is minimal. We expected that meant we might have to make our own beds, but the reality is that the rooms were not cleaned well--stains on the desk and TV console, hair in the corners of the bathroom floor and on the bathtub, and shaving hairs all over the bathroom sink, which also had soap residue from the previous guests. The room itself is shabby--old furniture, stains and holes on the walls, not anywhere close to what I expect for a 4 star property. The room was recleaned, but an hour later, we discovered that the bathroom sink was not draining. We waited for an hour for the maintenance man to show up, and it was determined that we would have to move rooms. No one came to help with our heavy luggage, which we had to schlep down to reception to get new keys. We complained reasonably and politely that our experience was not at all what we had hoped for, and at any other hotel I have ever stayed at, we would have been given a room upgrade, or perhaps free parking ($21 a day here!). But the manager said she wasn't able to do that, but if we wanted to leave "because we have so many problems with the hotel" she would refund the second day's charge. This was extremely disappointing. My boyfriend and I are currently deciding whether to stay here or leave for another hotel for the night. I will never stay at a Hotel Gouverneur again, and will absolutely not recommend it to anyone. Collapse
Arrogance toward guests during lockout

I recently stayed in room 2612 at Gouverneur Montréal for six nights. I'm a Club member and stayed at the hotel in October and November, in addition to the December stay. I arrived on Dec. 14, 2016, and found out that the management had locked out its line staff. Managers and supervisors manned the front desk and restaurant. I requested an upgrade to a business room for $45 per night. My key did not work, but someone let me in and told me to stop by the desk for a re-key. I unpacked and went down to get another key made. That one didn't work. They suggested a room change, but I had already put my clothes away, so they told me to ask security to let me in when I wanted to enter my room, hardly convenient, especially if coming in at 2 or 3 am. Next morning they sent someone to re-program the door lock. OK, that problem solved. I received written notices that there would be no housekeeping services because of the lockout, other than trash pickup and towel, paper, and amenity replacement. Anytime I went out I had to pry open the automatic doors to get out. There were scowling security guards that made the lobby feel like it was in the old Soviet Union and the KGB was watching. So, for six days I had to make my own bed and clean the bathroom myself, expecting that at checkout I would be offered a fair adjustment to my bill. WRONG! I was told that there was nothing they could do except remove two parking charges. BIG DEAL! The woman at the desk had the audacity to tell me I should have told her if there was a problem with the room. HELLO! The management locked out the employees that clean the rooms! This treatment of a loyal guest is unacceptable, and I am very seriously considering making another hotel my home when I visit Montréal, which is often. One upbeat note which kept this from being a one-star flop. The folks in the restaurant at breakfast were wonderful. I was employed in the hospitality business for over 40 years, so I am qualified to tell you how badly done their performance was. Collapse
Solid inner city experience

Great location, internal access to subway, and helpful staff. Decor could use an upgrade, but very affordable given proximity to key attractions. Some area hotels charge a fortune to park, but this one was $20 for a full 24 hours.

My partner and I have been staying here for almost 20 years, and while the condition of the hotel has been in slow decline, we have found the location ideal, staff and service outstanding. We arrived for New Years Weekend to find a picket line at the hotel entrance. With no foreknowledge of this, and all other hotels being sold out this weekend, we were left no option but to keep our reservation. From the attached letter we received at both the front desk, and under our room door, the hotel is operating with a skeleton crew of management. They admit they are not providing full housekeeping, or any food service after 11:00. Our room was UN-vacuumed, and there was dirt and debris scattered about. This is an entirely avoidable situation, which should not be inconveniencing me as a guest whatsoever. I would not have booked this reservation had I known of this strike, and the associated reductions in service provided from the hotel. I am a strong unionist, and support organized labor's efforts to negotiate better wages and working conditions for our hard working middle class. It disappoints me greatly that the hotel Gouverneur management is failing to negotiate in good faith with their staff. I will not be re booking here until I am assured this dispute is settled, and I would caution anyone else from doing so as well. Collapse
