We stayed in Golden Sands 3, a comfortable apartment with a small kitchen and a minimum of cutlery - no tea-towel, dishcloth or washing-up liquid- so you may want to pack these. It is ideal for snacks or ready meals. If you don't want to cook there is a restaurant on site, if not there is a grocery shop just first left from the hotel. For a real selection of fantastic food go to Spinneys near Golden Sands 10 - about 10-15 mins walk. The staff at Golden Sands are extremely helpful and will direct you. We were also grateful that the receptionist was able to give us an early check -in before I fell asleep at the restaurant breakfast table after arriving at 8a.m. Golden Sands 3 has a tour desk and we booked two really fantastic excursions on the Dhow with a lovely meal and Dune bashing - where we went out in a 4x4 with a great driver who took us on an adventure ride over the dunes - after is a meal at a bedouin camp where you can dress as an arab, hold a falcon, have a 5 min camel ride (as many times as you like), get a henna tattoo - ALL FREE. You may even get an opportunity to get up and belly dance....the dancer was lovely and it is fine for non-dancers to join in- if you're shy she won't press! There were also dune buggies - like quad bikes available at the camp - I don't know if there was a charge or not. We walked to the old Dubai area by the creek from the apartment - about 45 mins. Really nice and near the old souk. Be aware that Golden Sands is spread out over a large area - so check which one you are going to for the taxi and print off the map. Golden Sands does have a shuttle bus back to terminal 1 but not 3. We caught it at 12 noon. I think it runs every two hours. We would definitely recommend the Golden Sands if you want to self-cater at your own pace. It also has great staff and you will find tours/swimming pool and shops. It runs a shuttle to Jumeirah beach. For anything else - you can ring for a taxi. Collapse

Excellent value for money in reasonable location although you do need to use taxis to get to central parts of Dubai taxis are not expensive. Good spacious well equipped and very clean apartments with two bathrooms in the one bedroom apartment which was great. Nice kitchen area and has a washing machine. Cleaned to a high standard every day with clean linen too.Pool area very pleasant and well kept as well as air conditioned gym which we used every day, pool and gym looked after by Giovinda Adhikzi who was excellent all week, very helpful and polite and kept pool and gym in very good and tidy condition. For the value for money and standard we would stay here again. Excellent wi fi in pool areas and apartments all included in the price. Collapse

We landed late at night at Dubai Airport and it took nearly two hours to get through passport control. We had arrange a taxi and despite the delay, our lift was waiting for us. Even at 2am, the Airport is very busy both inside and on the road. Dubai is alcohol-free, so buy what you need in duty free (the prices seem similar in Dubai to the UK). The taxi drive took around 30 minutes and cost around 35 AED. The taxi we took claimed to take credit cards and the public transport NOL card, but this did not work, so ensure you have cash. Check in was straightforward and we were shown to our room in Golden Sands 3. There is good security with the lifts being room key controlled and plenty of reception staff. Our room was a good size. We had air con that worked OK. There was a table and chairs to eat meals and a sofa and coffee table area to watch the TV (not many UK channels). The kitchen area has an extractor fan, hob and fridge/freezer. There was a list of items that should have been available, but our apartment was short of cutlery, etc. We reported this to reception and the missing items were supplied. This was a theme during our stay that there were faults in our room, but if we reported them, they were fixed quickly. The water in our apartment was hot, even from the cold tap, but the hotel may have been having a problem, as the water temperature was more reasonable towards the end of the holiday. The tap water was OK to drink and we stored our filled water bottles in the fridge overnight to ensure the water was cold. There was two wardrobes, but not very many hangers, a room safe, iron and ironing board and bed with bedside tables. The en suite was relatively small with a basin, shower, toilet and bidet. We had an issue with the towels, as they would be removed by the cleaner in the morning and not replaced until early evening. Our room had a balcony, but overlooked the road. There were blackout curtains and the room was quiet at night. There were plenty of UK-style plug sockets and reception had an adaptor for round-pin plugs, which we borrowed. Generally, the room was good. Our room had a washing machine and dryer, but we could not work out how to use it! When we arrived, the machine's main panel was broken and the maintenance staff came and replaced it (they must hold spares) and the machine worked well. However, a couple of days later, we struggled again to make it work and gave up! The Apartment has a pool and sun beds, gym and sauna by the café, which was good, but small. There is also a connecting bridge to Golden Sands 5, but that roof pool was equally busy. There are places to eat, but we did not use them. There are several supermarkets nearby. There was a very large Carrefore at the Burjuman Metro mall (15 minutes walk), 12-15 AED in a taxi that can be caught outside the hotel. There was a big Spinney's (10 minutes walk), which was ideal for a weekly shop. There was also a smaller supermarket by Golden Sands 5 (5 minute walk), Grand Supermarket, which was good for a daily shop. All the shops took credit cards and none sold alcohol. The Apartment is not ideally situated in relation to metro stations, a taxi will cost around 12-15 AED. The Burjuman Metro is the furthest about 1.2 miles (15 minutes walk), but is good for shops. The ADCB Metro is the closest at 0.8 miles (10 minute walk). If you leave the Hotel and go straight across the car park opposite, you will reach 12A street and if you turn right, there is a bus stop (Mankhool Street 12A 2 2), opposite Golden Sands 9, where bus 83 goes to the Al Fahidie Metro Station (four stops). The only drawback is the bus does not run between 1030 and 1630 and we did not work out how to catch a bus back. You will need a NOL card (buy from the Metro station) to use public transport. We bought the rechargeable silver NOL card. Public transport (metro, bus and tram) is really cheap, but the NOL card is non-refundable and we needed to keep a minimum of 7.5 AED on the card, which was annoying. Generally, public transport is reliable and there are air conditioned pods in which to wait for buses. Getting hold of a bus map proved impossible, which did not help and crossing the road is often problematic, as there are sometimes barriers, if you plan on changing buses. We once had to walk half a mile to cross the road to change buses. Apart from the location, these apartments were good and we would stay here again. Collapse
