Without sounding snobby I cannot understand why this hotel has such good reviews, all I can think is that the people who stay here don’t usually stay in high class hotels. The good; The staff are very friendly The breakfast was good The location of the hotel is stunning. The not so good; We paid a lot of money to stay here, far more than we have paid to stay in far better 5 star hotels in Europe. Sadly the hotel is very much stuck in the 80’s. It has clearly had very little money spent on it since it was built and is desperately in need of a refit. For 2 days running our room wasn’t serviced as the housekeeper thought we had locked the door from the inside but we were actually out. The door handle didn’t work properly and needed pushing right down to open. We brought this to the attention of the reception but it wasn’t fixed. On the final day we were having a lie in as our flight was late and checkout was at 1200, only to be woken at 0830 by the housekeeper asking what time we would be leaving. Not good! I don’t feel as if you should have to leave a deposit for a towel to lie around the pool and you certainly shouldn’t have to pay to use the in room safe. I have never found this in a hotel of at least four stars. Protecting guest security, and not profiting from it, should be the priority. The air conditioning clearly needs replacing/servicing and obviously doesn’t work properly. When we arrived Gran Canaria was extremely hot, 36 degrees during the day, and our room was very warm. Air conditioning should push out very chilled air but all ours actually did was move warm air around. We brought this to the attention of the reception but it remained the same. I actually think that that is how the whole hotel is as the public areas are extremely warm as well and some other guests mentioned their room was too. We didn’t pay good money to try and sleep in a pool of our own sweat each night. Why oh why do they have those stupid daily fashion shows around the pool? This hotel isn’t set up for relaxing as it loves to play music everywhere. Every day when the fashion show started the audience around the pool were mainly in their 60’s and 70’s and half asleep, woken suddenly by loud music. It isn’t necessary. The main problem with this hotel though, and one that concerns me, is their very unreliable and old lift (elevator) system. You honestly can wait 10 to 15 minutes for a lift to reach you, so make sure you sit down and have a rest on the chairs provided. The lifts regularly out of service. On one day the outside glass lift we were in failed. I don’t do well in enclosed spaces and we activated the emergency alarm. We were standing in a glass lift, in the full afternoon sun, getting hotter and hotter. We were eventually rescued by staff after about 20 minutes but on being released there were no members of staff, no management, or anyone checking to see if we were ok, whether we needed any water or assistance, nor apology! During our final two days there we heard the emergency lift alarm twice more so the lifts must have failed at least twice more in two days. If you don’t like the strong possibility of being stuck in a lift then I would suggest you avoid this hotel. Whilst it may seem like a minor inconvenice for the hotel potentially this could be a tragedy waiting to happen, particularly if someone more infirm is stuck in the full sun or if there were a fire in the hotel. Not good. We will be visiting Gran Canaria again but will stay in the brand new 5 star Raddison Blu only 5 miles away and for the same price. Collapse

We found this to be a very good hotel, and it only missed a 5 rating thanks to a decidedly mixed reception experience. The rooms are large and clean, and almost all have a good view with a sunbed balcony. A/C worked fine. We were in 22xx which was great, but we'd recommend against 20xx as it is at pool level. Wifi was fine. The pool areas were large and well maintained, with enough sunbeds to go around. The activities team were generally enthusiastic, with some outstanding leaders. The mini club (for kids) did its job well, particularly around the one main event every day, such as cake decorating. The mini disco at 8pm was much loved, and it was nice to find the rather hidden post-disco entertainment for kids in the corner. The two main shows we saw were good and kept us entertained, although the warm up acts were nothing special. Be aware that the main show is at 21:30 if you have kids, and though we tried, it wasn't possible to get babysitters. The food was good and plentiful, and we'd recommend either Half Board or All Inclusive as the way to go, particularly as it is a fair way to any local restaurant. Our main complaint with the food is that they missed a "simple" vegetable choice most evenings, such as carrots or peas. Sadly, the layout of the food is very long and thin, with limited space to walk around, creating some bottlenecks. Only one spoon for the ice cream isn't the best idea either! The snack bar was fine, although had a relatively limited choice of smaller items. Reception is fundamentally a mixed bag. There are some good staff members, but there are more who are less good. On arrival, we were asked if we'd like a welcome drink, and then not given one - a far worse start than not being offered a drink at all. There are clearly lots of trainees, but the observation of the new staff seemed lacking. In fact, it could be argued that there are too many reception staff, such that no one takes responsibility. Be aware that they charge you for the safe and need a deposit IN CASH, plus they need a deposit for the pool towels IN CASH, so this isn't somewhere you can go without actual Euro cash. One nice aspect is that the hotel has free underground parking. One thing to bear in mind though is that there is no good pedestrian access out of the car park, so you have to take your life in your hands to walk up the car ramp. I'd advise dropping passengers and children at the entrance, so only the driver has to face this! Overall, we'd go back. It was a very good hotel that did pretty much everything we needed it to do, and the reception experience wasn't so terrible that it would put me off. Collapse

My wife and I reluctantly and sadly arrived home yesterday after what can only be described as a glorious week at the excellent Gloria Palace Amadores Hotel. Every member of staff we had any dealings with were so lovely, smiley, polite and helpful to the point that nothing was too much trouble for them. The food for 4* AI had to rate at the top of all the hotels we have stayed in, a credit to all involved including staff behind the scenes in the kitchens. Thank you to all the bar staff for their efficient, polite and happy service especially Rachael at the Salon Bar happily pushing her cocktail trolley around and creates the most wonderful Mojito. The rooms are lovely, nice size lovely views and kept immaculate by the hard working cleaners of which ours for the week was Esther, a lovely lady. Two fantastic pool areas with ample sun loungers, parasols and side tables and scrubbed down first thing every morning before the guests arrive. Only one very minor little request I would make is maybe consider adding a small salad to the AI menu at the snack bar. All in all we had a wonderful week and would like to highly recommend the Gloria Palace Amadores to anyone looking for a holiday in what can only be described as Heaven On Earth. Thank you very much to all for making our holiday so memorable in room 2601B we will be back. Collapse
