The hotel was ideally located for exploring Colchester, being right in the heart of town. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the bar area felt warm and welcoming - perfect after a days shopping! Colchester castle is a 5 minute walk from the hotel and there are plenty of places to eat and drink, all within walking distance of the hotel. Collapse

We pop in for a drink each time we're in Colchester. It was a freezing cold day yesterday and it was bitterly cold inside the George. There were three ladies in their coats huddled around the fire which wasn't even lit. Considering there seems to be little to nothing by way of heating, the fire was essential yesterday and would have been so very welcome to visitors. Instead I sat with my coat on my lap, drank up quickly and left. We will be back but this was one of the less pleasant visits for us. Collapse

I can’t believe that this is described as a four star hotel. I stayed for 2 nights and thought it was truly awful. On the positive side there is lots of information there that says they are having a complete refurbishment very soon. It can’t happen soon enough. Actually, if it was put to the vote I would opt for demolition. I objected to having to pay separately for parking when there is a sign there that says the car park is for residents and patrons of the George Hotel. This seems to conflict with all the other signs. I know that there are also lots of signs informing you of Park and Pay but I would have thought that if you were staying there then the hotel would do all that for you. That’s what happens at lots of other hotels I have stayed at. Okay the floorboards creak. I can cope with that but every other noise travels a hell of a way in that hotel. I’m pretty sure that no-one in the hotel had sex while I was there – if they had of done I would have heard them! I thought I was going to have to call someone to turn the shower on as it was so stiff. Then when I did do it I struggled (and I mean STRUGGLED) to turn it off. The bedroom was dirty and there were stains on the blanket in the wardrobe which I suspect would have shown up under a forensic ultraviolet light. The bed was okay. I had a meal in the restaurant and breakfast. I had been told that although the décor was poor the food was very good. I beg to differ. The food was very ordinary. There was one lady behind the bar who was very nice but that was it. The rest of the staff never smiled, never said hello, or even acknowledged your existence. I wouldn’t consider going back there until after the refurbishment and even then, it would have to be a cold day in hell before I go back again. Collapse

We’ve stayed here several times before. This hotel is like a favourite pair of old slippers. You’re loathe to throw them out because they are so comfortable. We would come here again and again because it makes us feel comfortable. What it really needs is a refurbish in a sensitive way that does not destroy the olde worldwide charm that it exudes. The shortcomings in decor and plumbing are outweighed by the really cosy feeling you get just by being here. The room was good and the bed was comfortable. The staff are charming. The breakfast is superb. The location right in the centre of Colchester is ideal. However, they need to sort the car parking arrangements out. £9.50 a night just to park your car adjacent to the hotel is a bit steep. Collapse

Booked for one night. First room that I was offered had heavily stained carpets, filthy paintwork, fungal infested bathroom with poorly painted bath and heavily stained shower curtain. Having refused this I was put into another room which, believe it or not was better BUT. The bathroom had no heating (nor did the room), a cracked bash basin, blocked bath waste, mouldy tiles, broken shower holder and a tampon in the waste bin. The paintwork was very tired and dirty, no spare blanket and the electrical socket that I plugged my phone in did not work. The bar area had filthy carpets, scuffed tables and ripped seating. The restaurant did not look much better and so decided that it was not worth the risk of eating there. I was not the only person to think so as the restaurant was completely empty despite the offer of a 25% discount on food. The car park cost overnight was £9.50. The staff were friendly and helpful and I was embarrassed for them as it really was a disgrace and this hotel should not be trading. Having said that I did have an excellent poached egg for breakfast. I understand that the hotel is due for refurbishment at some time but this is YEARS overdue and continuing to trade in this condition will ensure that there will be no repeat business. I was offered a 25% discount on my bill but that is hardly the point. I would not check my dog into this establishment. Collapse

From start to finish my experience with this hotel was unproffesional! Firstly, I was told that both my cards had been declined when booking over the phone, then I was told the machine wasn't working properly and that I would be rung back within an hour.....still waiting! Rang two days later and managed to book, on checking my bank account I had been charged on the original day of booking!! Admittedly I was reimbursed. Then on the day of my stay........I had to pay to park which I hadn't been told about at the time of booking, £9.50. I also had to pay a 'Bonding' payment of £25.00 in case I used their facilities, not sure what they were as there was no mini bar in the room! This wasn't returned on check out, I was told it would take up to three days for it to be repaid into my bank account, they wouldn't accept cash!!! Next, onto the room.....words fail me, it was soooo hot and you could not turn the radiators off as they were on a timer for the whole hotel! I've just returned from Thailand and it was hotter in that bedroom than it was in Hua Hin!! The TV didn't work, so no catch up on Match of the Day! When we did speak to anyone it was a case of sorry but.........! Breakfast the next day was of a good variety but we waited half an hour on the cooked food and when it did arrive it was tepid!! So all in all NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!!! Collapse
