We stayed at the george last night. Standards were far below anything I've seen before. To arrival I used to ladies toilet in the main reception and found one toilet heavily blocked, the tiles were missing on the wall around the toilet roll holder. Our room was on the first floor. Upon entry the room was dated, the floor was very creaky which was understandable as it is a listed building. The pillows were hard and the quilts too thick for this time of year with no sheet on the bed either. The shower pressure was weak and there were tiles missing around the toilet. The toilet was trickling all night. The coffee cups were also chipped Our friend stayed in the same hotel and came in quite late, he was banging on the door for a good 15 minutes before he was let in, the hotel porter was sat in the reception the whole time. At breakfast the continental was fine. The table bases were thick with dust and the lounge furniture resembled a nursing home. The george is an iconic listed building but it could be so much more. Deep clean and general maintenance needed throughout Collapse

Hotel was good value and quite nice in a faded way ! Refurbishment is on the cards I believe ! Had a nice Fish finger sandwich but the local Beer on hand pump was not the best condition to enjoy a good pint but not bad enough to return ! Colchester Castle is very close and well worth a visit ! The only real complaint is the £10 carpark fee which is outrageous ! Collapse

I've been involved with this hotel on and off over 55 years, through various owners and incarnations the establishment has stood fast through many a generation. I had afternoon tea there some weeks ago which was extremely poor. Having had and booked a number of afternoon tea family wake get-togethers there in the past of 50 people plus, our most recent visit was very poor indeed. Staff are over familiar or too friendly to the point of contempt. (Not formal enough and it shows). Admittedly the hotel had a coach party in of over 50 plus in the restaurant, the place looked overrun and so did the staff. Our £35 afternoon looked slapped together and of very poor portion quality. The tiered sandwich of 3 to 4 strips looked like it had been run over by a steam roller, the Petit fours 3 to 4 of them where smaller than a bite size milky way, that looked like a left over from the night before. Scones and fresh cream were more like "rock cakes" and scooped marscapone' from a pound store. This place has got to try harder a lot harder it hasnt got a chance in the hospitality stakes. There was enough tea in the pot for 3 cups, of two thirds quantity per cup. My own personal opinion or perception of the portion quantity and quality was to get the maximum out of you, for the minimum input in return to the customer. For £15 a head the profit ration doesn't have to be the standard sacrosanct 68% ? They could easily knock out a £7.50p cost decent tiered tea with £7.50p profit ! There wasn't any point in arguing about the quality of the whole ish and caboodle provided as I had very important guest with me. The new owner needs to buck very poor ideas up here rather quickly. ! The George is a service industry stalwart, not a cash cow for someone trying to make a quick buck ? Very poor day out I am very disappointed the afternoon out was spoilt. Collapse

We stayed here for the night after being given a Groupon voucher as a birthday present. The voucher included a cream tea, dinner and breakfast. From the outside, the hotel really didn't look anything more than you're average pub. Inside, around the reception, revealed an interesting and clearly very historic interior which included cabinets containing items of historical interest. We checked in smoothly and was shown to our room. The room was desperate for a make over. Wallpaper peeling off in some parts, yellow stains coming through around the decoration surrounding the light and the only natural light coming through a tiny windows which overlooked air conditioning units and the roof. The bed was comfy and the room appeared to be clean. The bathroom was basic and had a shower that you couldn't remover from its fixed position. It appeared to be clean. We had our cream tea in the room between the bar and the restaurant. The room in most desperate need of updating. It's decorated in an awful faded salmon colour with shabby furniture that makes the room look like communal area in an old people's home. Nothing matches and it really looks very run down. The cream tea was delicious, fresh, home baked scones and lovely clotted cream. The serving staff were very friendly and helpful, by far the biggest asset to the hotel. We sat down to eat dinner in the evening, however the menu didn't really strike us at all and so we decided to head to the Mexican a couple of doors down, where the food was delicious. We came back for a few drinks and the staff asked us why we didn't stay and if they could offer us anything as an alternative, which was declined but appreciated. We didn't sleep all that well as the floorboards are so creaky that if anyone moves anywhere in the hotel it sounds like someone is in your room and it wakes you up. It didn't bother me too much but my partner didn't sleep at all well. I appreciate there isn't much that can be done about this because of the wonderful old building. Breakfast was average, nothing out of the ordinary but again, the breakfast staff were giving a helpful and friendly service. The hotel has so much potential, such a beautiful building with lots of quirks and interesting features. It's a shame it doesn't look like it's seen any decorative update since the 90's. If it was updated, it could be made into a beautiful boutique hotel and would surely do well in such a central location. Collapse
