We decided on a short break in Fowey so that we could visit NT properties; Antony and Trellisick House and Gardens. Fowey Hall provided us with a lovely large Bedroom with comfortable bed and en suite bathroom (Only problem was the mirror for shaving was not adequate and generally the lighting in the bathroom was poor) The weather was awful during our stay but the staff stayed in good humour and looked after us very well, being polite and accommodating. Food was above average but it might help if the Hotel stocked some reasonably priced wines alongside their more expensive choices. Fowey centre is about a 5 minutes downhill walk (There is a park and ride service) but coming back up is a bit of challenge. Collapse
Overall v nice but with a few tweaks could be even lovelier

Beautiful setting overlooking Fowey bay, in lovely gardens- peaceful aspect. Welcoming, very comfortable, cosy and relaxing ground floor open lounges for log fire teas or reading a book a big plus. Dining room similarly well appointed- huge windows -airy clean decor. Friendly and helpful staff. So far so excellent. Pool & spa area housed in separate building. Pool perfect size and open all day and at 1.2m depth throughout perfect for family swimming. Gripes include lack of toiletries in changing rooms ( except for shower gel and shampoo very mediocre and not part of Spa range- currently mostly Elemis) and strange cleaning practise around pool area ( sweeping overflow - possibly dirty ?- water back into pool while customers in water??). Had facial and 30 mins back massage in Spa. Not state of art spa but a homely feel which was still nice. Facial v nice - pure Elemis. Massage pretty average with odd use of cooling gel after hot oil? Anyway there were a range of treatments that were not available because staff hadn't been trained on them which was a little disappointing too. We stayed in 2 different rooms in the main hotel house ( there are some more modern rooms situated in the former stables in the courtyard) owing to need to switch rooms during our stay. Both v nicely decorated. Boho/trad antique mix which is well suited to such period houses. Toiletries in rooms were from Voya ( lovely organic Irish company) and great fluffy white towels etc. However some window blinds were broken and no stand up shower in one of our rooms which we hadn't been warned about. Also, although the hotel has pet ( dog) friendly policy which other customers clearly enjoy ( we don't have dog) one of our rooms carried a distinctly doggy smell which may not be noticed perhaps by other dog owners but was very noticeable to us. Not sure if that is a common feature as usually don't stay in pet friendly hotels. Finally biggest gripe reserved for the restaurant. Having said that, the breakfast ( often a run of the mill affair) was the culinary high point of the day. Great range of bespoke as well as traditional cooked breakfast with unusually perfect grilled tomatoes and scrambled eggs ( not together! , although latte was dreadful! However lunch/ dinner menus were repetitive and qualitatively very average, sadly. Having said that, we had very fussy 6 yo who wouldn't eat anything off any menu ( except breakfast) and staff were extremely accommodating to his special requests. Despite this, the hotel provided attentive service throughout and some other very nice family friendly touches. Didn't use childcare facilities but staff seemed very nice and kids that did, seemed happy. Again we didn't partake, but the film screenings in family cinema room are a great idea, particularly on a rainy day ( of which there were too many during our visit) . All in all a very nice place to stay for both adults and kids. We would most likely return. Collapse
Highly recommended spa day!

This was our 5th holiday at Fowey Hall and we had a fabulous time (again!). The thing that makes this hotel so good is the service. The staff don't change but do get promoted and move around the hotel and I think this reflects well on the management and helps them give guests a great experience. The food in the restaurant was lovely and they catered to my special requirements (dairy and gluten free) by creating delicious options just for me. Service was great too under the lovely Oihane (sp?). The kids loved the den and the ladies there (Laura, Amy and team) looked after them so well and provided a much a appreciated evening babysitting service. We enjoyed the Buccaneers outdoor adventure and Animal Petting activities (although I wasn't so sure about the snake!). When the weather was wet we enjoyed the spa, pool and the massive DVD collection. When it was dry we had fun on the zip wire and found some massive crabs at Readymoney Cove. It was brilliant to see Emma and Martin again and to see their careers progressing (deservedly so in our experience). If you've got young children, Fowey is the hotel for you. I'm hoping we'll be back but my husband keeps saying he wants to go somewhere hot (he's been saying that for the last 4 years though...). Tips - Polkerris Beach is fab and Sam's on the beach is great for lunch. Book in advance to guarantee a table. The Luggar Inn (across the estuary on the little ferry) is great for amazing pub seafood (an enormous lobster and chips!), again booking is advised. The Cormorant Hotel is a bit old fashioned (don't take kids) but the food is good and the views are beautiful (if you fancy a change from the fab food at Fowey Hall). Collapse
