Good base but could certainly be better with better staff management and training

1)Deluxe room was a good size. Nice arrangement of living and sleeping area. 2)Good general facilities on offer (public seating, games room, outdoor pool, Piccadilly Circus club etc) 3)Individual helpful staff members who worked beyond their job roles to help us. (The lovely lady with a nose piercing responsible for cleaning our room, Christiano on reception, Mr Omar the catering manager, The lovely Asian waiter who ensured our dietary needs were met and was always polite) 4)Location was good with useful eye catching shuttle bus to the old town. 5)Met many of our requests before our stay. This did take two e-mails and a phone call to ensure this was completed. The Gym facilities and training room where excellent for ours son Taekwondo Training. The fact that they had changed policy before our arrival meant we were very lucky to have free reign of the spa facilities whenever we needed it. 1)Shuttle bus trips to the beach would be useful. 2)Some waiting staff need to have more consistent and fair practice about who can dine and for how long. No one should be admitted into the dining room without cards. Checking only the cards of some people at random shows age, gender, physical and racial discrimination. This may have been unintentional but still unprofessional. 3)As over zealous as the waiting staff could be, the security during the night seemed to be non-existent. Literally, some people seemed to just walk in the hotel off the street. I suppose there must have been CCTV but seeing security personnel during the night is reassuring. 4)Lack of vegetarian choices during meal times. Mr Omar did attempt to make limited changes. 5)Clearer information about calling reception needed. I could walk there easily from my room but not everyone can. 6)The room my family stayed in was not cleaned for three days. The tall male receptionist with white hair did not handle my inquiry well and was overall disappointed with his performance. 7)Specialized children's menu with accessible serving equipment would greatly benefit families and ensure children always had a choice of something they can eat. Maybe something other than pizza. Collapse

We stayed here for six nights and found it really nice, we went with the self catering as we like to try different restaurants when we're away. The rooms were great plenty of room, two tvs' and a/c. Plus washing machine, dish washer, microwave and fridge. The pool and pool area was great. Gym and indoor pool plus games room, bar and restaurant. There was one area where they fall down and it's house keeping, we had a few issues but in fairness they resolved it and I would recommend this hotel. It's in a great location near Old and New Town, beaches and some great restaurants. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We had dinner in Flavors in the hotel one evening and st €18.00 per person for the buffet that includes wine, it's great value and fresh food is continually added. You are bound to find something you like. They is a free shuttle bus service but we walked or took taxis which are great value and recent model cars too. Collapse

This is not a 5 * hotel but really the price you pay reflects this . We chose self catering , check in was perfect , very quick and efficient , apartment was very spacious , clean upon arrival and the cleaning service throughout the stay was not acceptable , floors not mopped or hoovered , no dustpan provided so I couldn't do it myself , air conditioning was fantastic , would have been very unpleasant without it as was very hot while we were there . The bar staff were really slow in serving you , the Piccadilly bar was never that busy but he took about 15/20 mins to serve you , not what you want when you are on holiday , the prices in the bar are shocking , 5 star prices for not 5 star quality , The entertainment was appalling , rubbish for kids , shame really as this hotel really tries to please in a lot of areas but there are basic flaws . There are a lack of sun beds and umbrellas for the amount of guests. The pool isn't heated but was welcome in the heat ! You have to reserve a bed early or you will go without . No lifeguards at all . Gym is fantastic but you have to pay if you aren't all inclusive . Overall we had a happy time there and would return , situated close to nice bars and restaurants . Collapse

I agree with the comments that this is not a 5* hotel. The apartment we had was a good size and it was generally clean (I had to do a quick wipe down of the kitchen worktop & bathroom tiles first as they weren't clean) are well equipped and have good furnishings. The windows and balcony glass could do with a good clean but once you get over these first impressions then it's definitely a fine place to stay. The aircon in the rooms and hotel itself was great, we actually had to turn it off one night as it was too cold! You have the option of using the other MGM hotels in Albufeira for the activities, we went to the Praia de Oura and it was just rammed in comparison to the Forte do Vale, we were happy that we chose this one as it's much more relaxed and a smaller size. The pool is good, a bit cold when you dip your toe in but as Michael Macintyre says 'it's fine once you're in!'. I saw the staff checking the water quality every day. The policy of not reserving sun beds is not enforced but it's not a mad dash at 6am like some places. Obviously it depends how busy the hotel is but we generally went down about 8.30/9 and were able to get 4 beds no problem. It can get a bit windy early evening and the umbrellas are pretty bendy but just watch them. We saw two come flying out and launch over the side into the road below (no one was hurt and the umbrellas retrieved). The funny thing was it was the same lady on two different days - you'd have thought she'd learnt from the first time! Just pull them out or tie them up! There is an indoor pool and gym which we used, it was a nice retreat from the midday sun. We thought you had to pay but all inclusive guests were free to use the facilities. I was concerned about the food before I went but needn't have been. It's not haute cuisine but it's edible and freshly prepared. The selection is not as big as most all inclusive buffets but we found it quite nice. The waiters work very hard to turn the tables around for you and are all very pleasant chaps. There are times when you can't get food which some people have moaned about but we were absolutely fine with it. Breakfast 8.30 to 10.30, Lunch 12 - 2.30, Snacks in bar 4.00 - 6.00, Dinner 6.30 - 9.30 (from memory). If you pace yourself it's not like you're going to starve! Everyone in the hotel is booked for different meal options, breakfast is normally quite busy but then lunch and dinner are not so. There are some lovely restaurants in the area, we went out one night to break up the buffet routine. Recommend the boat trip to the caves and dolphin watching from the marina. Aquashow water park good also. Hotel is a good quiet spot between the new and old towns, easy walking between the two. The nearest beach is about 5-10 mins walk (depending how fast you walk!) and it's a downward hill there and uphill back. Beaches are beautiful and there are plenty of activities available. Early morning walks/ runs were glorious! Weather amazing! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return (family of 4 - two adults and two teenage girls 14,13). Collapse

I can understand why some reviewers were impressed by this MGM hotel. The lobby is spacious and it has four lifts constantly ferrying guests to the upper and lower floors. The free shuttle bus parked opposite the front door is a promising addition to your stay and it is convenient, frequent and well used. It leaves you in the heart of the Old Town or at the Shopping Centre. The front of house staff are helpful. The hotel was built on a slope so that the front door appears to lead to a lesser street than the other door. Stairs or a lift take you to a lower floor where you find a lobby that leads out onto a busier street. On this lower level you find the bar and the restaurant as well as the access to the spa and gym (payment is an extra). The main lobby leads out to the triple pool where you find plentiful pool chairs. The two kidney shaped pools are 1.43m deep, so you have be a good swimmer. Strangely, even on the hottest of days the water in the pools was cold. As I'm not a good swimmer, the depth and the temperature put me off using the pools. The children's pool is close to the pool bar and it was always busy. I have to point out the condition of some of the tiling surrounding the pools. The squelch of water under some tiles after they have been cleaned down reveals the loose ones. The pool bar opens around the middle of the day. It serves drinks and you can order food. Pool Towels are NOT provided free to guests. You have to pay for them at reception and you can choose to change them as often as you like. You payment is not returned! Another non-returnable payment - and I think that it is a steep one for a basic need in an apartment - is an €18.20 charge for the use of the safe in your apartment for the week. We had booked a Deluxe One Bedroom Apartment. Throughout the hotel you will find the MGM Magazine that boasts of the apartment-upgrading that has been 'completed'. At the front door there is a very prominent display of upgrades. The apartment we had was indeed big. The bedroom had ample room and the living room was spacious. Both led onto separate balconies that got a limited amount of the sunshine due to the height of the sun in the sky. Clothes-drying facilities are on the bedroom balcony. Our rooms opened onto a very busy roundabout. The first shock that I got on arrival was the state of an outer stairwell directly below our windows. There was a pile of litter as well as a sun umbrella. The second shock was that we found that there were ants on the kitchen worktops. We had arrived late so we did our best to clear them and waited to see the cleaner on the next morning. To our amazement it was 4.30 in the afternoon when the lady arrived to do our rooms. I indicated the presence of ants and she appeared to understand. When we returned that night to the rooms, we found that the sink in the kitchen and the surrounding worktops had lots of ants. There were more in the bathroom. Early on the next morning I brought four things in writing to the notice of reception- 1. The litter in the stairwell outside 2. The ants 3. The fact that the shower continued to run when only the bath should have been running. (That made bathing interesting and the fault was not remedied.) 4. A half-finished packet of crisps still in a kitchen press when we arrived. The litter outside was duly cleaned up. A different cleaner arrived bright and early after breakfast that day and she did a great job of eliminating the ants and cleaning the apartment. We did not see the ants again. This lady continued to clean our rooms until Friday when again the cleaning by another lady took place at almost 4.30pm. A supervisor did call one morning, but her only query was about the ants. We assured her that we had not seen any since the second cleaning. During the week when we began to use the balconies to have snacks, I became aware of how dirty the table was there.(See photos). Apart from the grime on the frame between the slats of the table, there were also black webs to be seen underneath. I have to say that the presence of ants, the state of the outside table, the faulty shower - and a half finished bag of crisps left in a kitchen press - all made me wonder how well prepared apartments are. Have a look at the photos I took of the grouting in the bathroom as well as the half-cleaned vent under the washbasin. They speak volumes about upgrading being incomplete (at least in our apartment). The twin beds in the bedroom were reasonably comfortable, if a bit firm. Be aware that if you wish to use the sofa bed in the living room it is not very comfortable. The two 'mattresses' on it are pre-dressed. The air-conditioning is very necessary and worked very satisfactorily. There are two TVs and these have a limited number of channels in English - including BBC. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils etc for four people. A washing machine proved an advantage during the week. There is also a dishwasher, a kettle and a coffee maker. A full-sized fridge/freezer works well. The Hotel is situated within taxi or shuttle-bus reach of the town. You could walk to it (allow for the hills) or you could head off in the opposite direction towards Oura or The Strip. Beaches are within walking distance, if you are fit for the steep hills. This is the nature of the terrain around the city of Albufeira. One handy form of transport that stops beside the hotel is the road-mini-train that follows a circular route to and from the highest point in town. Taxis are reasonably priced. The tuc-tucs are noisy and omnipresent. We had half-board in the Hotel. While food is plentiful in buffet style for both breakfast and evening dinner, it does tend to feel a bit repetitive, even when the main courses for dinner are varied from day to day. Free wine at dinner was a nice touch. Our biggest problem with hot food was that it became cold very quickly. Sometimes it was not hot enough to begin with. And then there is the perpetual problem of cold plates! Why is there not a heated well for warming them before use? There was plenty of fruit and a good selection of dessert dishes. We eventually abandoned the half-board dinners and dined in a couple of fine restaurants elsewhere. Would we go back to Forte do Vale? Unfortunately I would have to say NO - unless I could be convinced/assured that I was getting one of the upgraded apartments. There are lots of hotels that I have stayed in that live up to their four or five star ratings. So MGM, make The Forte Do Vale live up to its rating. Collapse
